Chapter 5: The Brother in the Shadows

Marcus stared at the documents.
His father's voice seemed to come from somewhere far away.
“What do you mean she already owns it?””
Richard folded his hands.
“Eight months ago, Vanessa arranged a restructuring agreement. Your company was drowning in debt. She offered to save it.””
“I know that.””
“No, son. You know the version she told you.””
Richard tapped the papers.
“She didn't invest in Reed Construction. She purchased the debt through a holding company and used it to acquire controlling interest.””
Marcus shook his head.
“She told me the investment was temporary.””
“She lied.””
Detective Miller stepped forward.
“Mr. Reed, where did you obtain these documents?””
Richard looked at him.
“From the people who helped Vanessa build the arrangement.””
“Who?””
Richard didn't answer.
Marcus slammed his hand onto the table.
“Enough! You faked your death, watched me lose my mind, and now you're sitting here talking about business?””
Richard looked up.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“From what?””
“From the people who killed your mother.””
Silence.
The rain tapped against the windows.
Marcus slowly lowered his hand.
“My mother died of cancer.””
Richard's face tightened.
“That is what I told you.””
Marcus stared.
“You're saying someone killed her?””
Richard nodded.
“Your mother discovered something about my business dealings. She found evidence that I had been moving money through shell companies.””
“And?””
“She threatened to go to the authorities.””
Marcus shook his head.
“Why would you hurt her?””
Richard looked away.
“I didn't.””
“Then who did?””
Richard took a long breath.
“Vanessa's father.””
Marcus felt his heart pounding.
“Vanessa's father?””
“His name was Thomas Vale. He worked with me for nearly twenty years. When your mother found the documents, Thomas arranged an accident.””
Marcus backed away.
“What accident?””
“A car crash.””
Marcus remembered the phone call.
The hospital.
The doctor telling him that his mother hadn't survived.
He had been seventeen.
His father had held him while he cried.
Now that memory felt poisoned.
“You knew?””
Richard closed his eyes.
“I suspected.””
“You suspected?””
“I couldn't prove it.””
“And you did nothing?””
Richard looked at him.
“I had a son to protect.””
Marcus laughed without humor.
“You protected me by pretending to die?””
Richard's jaw tightened.
“Thomas died six years ago. Vanessa inherited his connections. She knew where the money was hidden. When she realized I had kept the original records, she started looking for me.””
Marcus looked at the ownership certificate.
“So you faked your death to disappear.””
“Yes.””
“And left me to marry her?””
Richard didn't answer.
Marcus stepped closer.
“You knew she was dangerous.””
“I didn't know she would target you.””
“You didn't know?””
Richard stood abruptly.
“I thought she wanted the company. I didn't know she wanted to marry you.””
Detective Miller raised his voice.
“Enough. Mr. Reed, you're coming with us.””
Richard barely looked at him.
“Not until Marcus understands.””
He turned to his son.
“Vanessa has a brother.””
Marcus frowned.
“What?””
“His name is Adrian Vale.””
Richard removed another photograph.
A man stood beside Vanessa at a charity event.
He was tall, broad-shouldered, with dark hair and a thin scar beneath his chin.
Marcus recognized him immediately.
The man from the police station photograph.
Daniel Pierce.
But there was something else.
The photograph showed his name on a printed event card.
*ADRIAN VALE — INVESTMENT DIRECTOR.*
Marcus looked up.
“Daniel Pierce is Adrian Vale?””
Richard nodded.
“He changed his name years ago.””
Detective Miller stepped forward.
“Do you have proof?””
Richard handed him a folder.
“Everything is there.””
The detective began examining the documents.
Marcus looked at his father.
“Why did Vanessa want Claire dead?””
“Because Claire found the original ownership papers.””
“But why would Claire have them?””
Richard hesitated.
Then he said, “Because I gave them to her.””
Marcus frowned.
“When?””
“Before I disappeared.””
Marcus felt the room shift.
“You trusted my ex-wife with your business documents?””
“I trusted her more than I trusted you.””
The words landed like a slap.
Marcus stared.
Richard seemed to regret saying them.
“Marcus—”
“No. Explain.””
Richard walked to the fireplace.
“Claire came to me after she discovered Vanessa was using your company to move money. She wanted to protect Ava.””
Marcus's throat tightened.
“And you told her?””
“I gave her the original ownership certificate and a list of the accounts Vanessa had been using.””
“Why didn't she tell me?””
“Because Vanessa had access to your phone, your emails, and your office.””
Marcus thought about the messages Claire had received.
The calls Vanessa had answered.
The documents he had signed without reading carefully.
He felt sick.
Richard continued.
“Claire was supposed to meet me here two weeks ago. But Vanessa found out.””
“And pushed her into the pool.””
“Yes.””
Marcus turned away.
For a moment, he couldn't speak.
Then he looked back.
“Where is the certificate now?””
Richard pointed toward the cabinet.
“Inside the envelope.””
Marcus checked.
There was a photograph of a document, but no original.
He looked at his father.
“Where is it?””
Richard's expression changed.
“I don't have it.””
“You said—”
“I gave it to Claire.””
Marcus felt a surge of frustration.
“Claire said you gave it to her!””
“I did.””
“Then where is it?””
Richard lowered his voice.
“She hid it somewhere Vanessa would never think to look.””
Marcus stared.
“Where?””
Richard opened his mouth.
Before he could answer, the lights went out.
Detective Miller immediately reached for his weapon.
“Everybody stay where you are!””
A crash sounded from the kitchen.
Then a second.
An officer shouted.
“Movement! Back door!””
Marcus turned.
A shadow rushed across the hallway.
Richard grabbed his arm.
“Don't move!””
A gunshot exploded.
The sound shook the windows.
Marcus dropped behind the table.
Detective Miller shouted for backup.
An officer ran toward the kitchen.
Then came the sound of breaking glass.
A vehicle engine roared outside.
The intruder was escaping.
Miller rushed to the front door.
“Stay here!””
Marcus turned toward his father.
Richard was standing near the cabinet.
A dark stain spread across his shirt.
“Dad?””
Richard looked down.
His hand was pressed against his side.
Marcus rushed toward him.
“You've been shot!””
Richard collapsed.
Marcus caught him before his head hit the floor.
“Call an ambulance!””
An officer shouted into his radio.
Richard gripped Marcus's wrist.
“Listen to me.””
“Don't talk.””
“Marcus. The certificate.””
“Forget the certificate!””
Richard shook his head.
“It's not just about the company.””
He pulled Marcus closer.
“There's a second document.””
“What document?””
Richard's breathing became shallow.
“The original trust.””
Marcus frowned.
“What trust?””
“The trust your mother created before she died.””
Marcus felt cold.
“My mother?””
Richard nodded.
“She left everything to Ava.””
Marcus stared at him.
“What?””
“Not to you. Not to me. To her.””
Richard coughed.
“Vanessa found out. That's why she wants Ava.””
Marcus felt his entire world stop.
His six-year-old daughter wasn't just a witness.
She was the person standing between Vanessa and a fortune.
Richard's fingers tightened.
“The key, Marcus.””
“What key?””
“The bracelet.””
Marcus froze.
Ava's bracelet.
The pink bracelet with the silver key charm.
The one Vanessa had taken.
Richard's eyes widened.
“Where is it?””
Marcus couldn't answer.
He remembered Detective Miller's photograph.
Vanessa entering the maintenance shed.
The bracelet on her wrist.
Then he remembered what Ava had said.
The man who helped Vanessa wore a watch like his father's.
Marcus looked at Richard.
“Dad, the bracelet is with Vanessa.””
Richard's face went pale.
“No.””
He struggled to sit up.
“No, no, no.””
“What?””
Richard grabbed Marcus's collar.
“She has the key.””
“To what?””
“The trust's vault.””
At the hospital, Ava was asleep when Marcus arrived.
Claire was awake.
Detective Miller had arranged extra security outside the room.
Marcus rushed to the bed.
“Where is Ava's bracelet?””
Claire looked confused.
“What?””
“The pink bracelet. The one with the key charm.””
Claire's face changed.
“Vanessa took it.””
“When?””
“The morning of the wedding.””
Marcus gripped the bed rail.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“I did tell you she took it!””
He closed his eyes.
She was right.
He had been so overwhelmed by the recording, the documents, and his father's appearance that he hadn't understood the significance.
Claire sat up.
“What's happening?””
Marcus lowered his voice.
“My father was shot.””
Claire gasped.
“Is he alive?””
“Barely. He told me the bracelet contains a key.””
Claire looked toward Ava.
“Oh, my God.””
“What?””
Claire swallowed.
“He gave that bracelet to Ava when she was born.””
Marcus frowned.
“I bought it for her at Disney World.””
“Not that one. The little pink one she wore when she was a baby.””
Marcus stared.
Claire continued.
“Your father told me it was a family heirloom. He said the charm was supposed to stay with the first granddaughter.””
Marcus slowly sat down.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“I thought it was just sentimental.””
Claire reached for her purse.
“There's something else.””
She removed a small photograph.
It showed Ava as a baby, sitting in Richard's arms.
Around her wrist was the pink bracelet.
But the silver charm was different.
It wasn't shaped like a key.
It was shaped like a tiny house.
Marcus examined the picture.
“That's not the same charm.””
Claire shook her head.
“No. The charm was changed.””
“When?””
“About six months ago. Vanessa said she wanted to have it repaired.””
Marcus stared at her.
“Vanessa had access to the bracelet?””
Claire nodded.
“She returned it to Ava after a few days.””
Marcus stood.
“She switched the charm.””
Claire's eyes filled with fear.
“Marcus, what if the key she took isn't the original?””
He looked at the sleeping child.
Then his phone vibrated.
An unknown number.
A photograph appeared.
It showed Vanessa sitting inside a car.
She was holding Ava's pink bracelet.
Beside her sat a man.
Adrian Vale.
And on the dashboard was a small black box.
A message appeared.
*Your father should have stayed dead.*
Then another.
*Now bring me the little girl.*
Marcus stared at the screen.
May you like
A final message arrived.
*Midnight is over. We start with Ava.*
