Chapter 6: The Girl Who Inherited Everything

Marcus didn't sleep that night.

He sat beside Ava's hospital bed while Detective Miller arranged for additional security.

Every time someone walked past the door, Marcus looked up.

Every time Ava moved, he checked that she was breathing.

At 3:12 a.m., Claire woke.

“Marcus?””

He turned.

“I'm here.””

“Have you heard from your father?””

“He's in surgery.””

“Is he going to survive?””

“The doctors haven't said.””

Claire looked toward Ava.

“What's going to happen to her?””

Marcus rubbed his face.

“I don't know yet.””

Claire reached for his hand.

“Then we need to find the trust.””

He nodded.

“Richard said the bracelet key opens a vault.””

“But Vanessa has the bracelet.””

“Maybe not the real key.””

Claire frowned.

“What do you mean?””

Marcus showed her the photograph of baby Ava.

“Look at the charm.””

Claire examined it.

Then she leaned closer.

“That's not the same one.””

“Exactly.””

Marcus enlarged the image.

The original charm had a tiny engraved letter R.

The replacement charm Vanessa had taken had a small circular opening.

Claire whispered, “Your father must have hidden something inside.””

Marcus nodded.

“That's what I'm thinking.””

Ava stirred.

“Daddy?””

He immediately leaned over.

“I'm here, sweetheart.””

She opened her eyes.

“Is Mommy okay?””

Claire smiled weakly.

“I'm right here, baby.””

Ava reached for her.

Marcus watched them embrace.

Then Ava looked at him.

“Daddy, can I tell you something?””

“Anything.””

“Before the wedding, Aunt Vanessa asked me to give her my bracelet.””

Marcus went still.

“What did she say?””

“She said she wanted to make it pretty.””

“Did you give it to her?””

Ava nodded.

“She gave me a different one back.””

Marcus glanced at Claire.

Ava continued.

“But I kept the little house charm.””

Marcus stared.

“Where?””

Ava pointed toward her stuffed rabbit.

“The pocket.””

Marcus reached for the rabbit.

He opened the small fabric pocket on its back.

Inside was a tiny silver charm.

The original charm.

The one engraved with the letter R.

Marcus stared at it.

Claire covered her mouth.

Ava smiled faintly.

“I didn't like the new one. So I kept Grandpa's.””

Marcus felt his eyes burn.

He kissed her forehead.

“You did a very good job, sweetheart.””

Ava looked confused.

“Am I in trouble?””

“No. Never.””

He held her close.

“You may have just helped us find something very important.””

At 5:40 a.m., Detective Miller arrived.

He examined the charm beneath a magnifying glass.

“This isn't an ordinary bracelet attachment.””

Marcus handed it over.

“Can you open it?””

The detective turned the small piece carefully.

A hidden seam ran around the edge.

He pressed a tiny notch.

The charm opened.

Inside was a folded strip of paper.

Marcus unfolded it.

Three lines were written in his father's handwriting.

*BLACKWATER — LOWER CELLAR.*

*WALL 17.*

*THE HOUSE BELONGS TO THE CHILD.*

Detective Miller looked at Marcus.

“Your father left a message.””

Marcus nodded.

“There's something in the cellar.””

“Then we'll go together.””

Marcus glanced at Claire.

“I can't leave them.””

“Two officers will stay here.””

Claire squeezed his hand.

“Go.””

He hesitated.

“Claire—”

“Marcus, we've spent too long letting other people decide what happens to our family.””

She looked toward Ava.

“Find out what your mother-in-law left for our daughter.””

At 7:20 a.m., Marcus and Detective Miller returned to Blackwater Lake.

The police had secured the property.

Richard was still in surgery, but an officer had confirmed that he was alive.

Marcus carried the brass key Claire had given him.

The cellar entrance was hidden behind a wooden cabinet in the kitchen.

It took several minutes to move the furniture.

Behind it was a narrow door.

The lock was old.

Marcus inserted the key.

It turned.

A deep mechanical click echoed through the kitchen.

Detective Miller pulled the door open.

Cold air rose from below.

A staircase descended into darkness.

“Stay behind me,” Miller said.

Marcus switched on his phone flashlight.

The walls were covered in old photographs.

His mother.

His father.

Marcus as a child.

And a photograph of Ava in the hospital, just hours after she was born.

Marcus stopped.

“How did this get here?””

Detective Miller studied the picture.

“Your father must have kept records of everything.””

They reached the bottom.

The cellar was larger than Marcus expected.

Metal filing cabinets lined the walls.

There was an old desk.

A locked safe.

And seventeen wooden panels numbered in sequence.

Marcus approached the seventeenth.

He ran his fingers over the surface.

A small indentation was hidden beneath the edge.

He inserted the silver charm.

It fit perfectly.

A soft click sounded.

The panel opened.

Inside was a small black box.

Marcus removed it.

Detective Miller examined the lock.

“Do you have another key?””

Marcus shook his head.

He turned the box over.

A message had been engraved on the bottom.

*FOR MY GRANDDAUGHTER, WHEN THE WORLD FORGETS HER WORTH.*

Marcus swallowed.

He opened the box.

Inside were several documents.

The original family trust.

A sealed letter.

And a small USB drive.

He picked up the trust.

The first page bore his mother's signature.

The second page contained the name of the beneficiary.

Ava Reed.

Marcus read the terms carefully.

The trust held ownership of a substantial portfolio of property, shares, and investments.

Its estimated value was more than $86 million.

But there was a condition.

Ava would receive full control when she turned twenty-one.

Until then, an independent trustee would manage the assets.

Marcus looked at Detective Miller.

“Who is the trustee?””

The detective turned the page.

His expression changed.

“Mr. Reed.””

“What?””

“Look.””

Marcus read the name.

*VANESSA VALE.*

He felt his stomach drop.

“No.””

Detective Miller checked the signature.

“She's listed as the original trustee.””

Marcus stared at the document.

His mother had trusted Vanessa.

Or someone had forged the appointment.

He turned to the next page.

There was an amendment.

It had been signed six months earlier.

The amendment removed Vanessa as trustee.

And appointed a new person.

Marcus's hands began to shake.

The name was unmistakable.

*CLAIRE REED.*

Marcus looked at the detective.

“Claire?””

Detective Miller nodded.

“Your ex-wife.””

Marcus examined the date.

The amendment had been signed three weeks before Richard's supposed death.

Then he noticed a handwritten note in the margin.

*If anything happens to me, Claire must protect Ava. The money is hers. The house is hers. Everything is hers.*

Marcus felt his throat tighten.

His mother had planned for this.

She had known something was wrong.

He picked up the sealed letter.

His name was written on the front.

*To Marcus, if you ever discover what your father did.*

He opened it.

The letter was several pages long.

The handwriting was unmistakably his mother's.

My darling Marcus,

If you are reading this, then the people I feared have finally reached our family.

I need you to understand that I did not leave this money to punish you or your father. I left it to Ava because she deserves a life that belongs to her.

Your father has spent years believing that money can solve every problem. Vanessa's family believes the same thing.

But there is something more important than money.

The truth.

Marcus turned the page.

His mother's next words made him stop breathing.

There is one person in this family who knows exactly what happened the night I died.

And it isn't Richard.

Marcus looked up.

Detective Miller watched him.

“What's wrong?””

Marcus continued reading.

I saw the man who tampered with my car.

He was wearing a Reed Construction security uniform.

He had been working for us for years.

His name was—

The rest of the sentence had been torn away.

Marcus stared at the missing section.

“Who tore this?””

Detective Miller examined the paper.

“Recently, by the look of it.””

Marcus turned the page.

There was another paragraph.

If you find the USB drive, play the file marked FAMILY.

But do not play it alone.

Marcus picked up the USB.

Detective Miller took it.

“We'll examine it at the station.””

Marcus nodded.

Then he noticed something else inside the box.

A small envelope.

It contained a photograph.

His mother was standing in front of the old house.

Beside her was a man in a security uniform.

Marcus recognized him.

He had seen that face countless times growing up.

The man had worked for Richard for twenty years.

He had attended Marcus's graduation.

He had carried Ava around the garden when she was a baby.

And he had been at Richard's funeral.

Marcus whispered his name.

“Samuel.””

Detective Miller looked up.

“Who?””

“Samuel Brooks. My father's head of security.””

The detective took the photograph.

“Do you know where he is now?””

Marcus shook his head.

“He disappeared after my father's death.””

Detective Miller immediately pulled out his phone.

“I'll have someone locate him.””

But before he could make the call, Marcus's phone rang.

It was the hospital.

He answered immediately.

“Hello?””

A nurse spoke quickly.

“Mr. Reed, your daughter is asking for you.””

“Is something wrong?””

“I'm afraid there's been an incident.””

Marcus's heart slammed against his ribs.

“What incident?””

“Someone attempted to enter your daughter's room.””

“Who?””

“We stopped him before he reached the bed.””

Marcus grabbed the detective's arm.

“Who was it?””

The nurse hesitated.

Then she said, “A man claiming to be your father.””

Marcus went cold.

“Richard is in surgery.””

“I understand, sir.””

“Then who was it?””

The nurse lowered her voice.

“He said his name was Samuel Brooks.””

Marcus looked at Detective Miller.

The detective's expression hardened.

“Where is he now?””

“Security has him in the lobby.””

Marcus began moving toward the door.

Then the nurse spoke again.

“Mr. Reed?””

“Yes?””

“There's something else.””

“What?””

“He asked us to give your daughter a message.””

Marcus stopped.

“What message?””

The nurse took a breath.

“He said, 'Tell Ava that Grandpa wants his key back.''”

Marcus looked down at the empty black box.

The silver charm was still in his pocket.

Then he heard a small voice from the other end of the phone.

“Daddy?””

It was Ava.

“Daddy, please come back.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“I'm coming, sweetheart.””

He ended the call.

Detective Miller was already heading for the car.

But as they reached the front door, Marcus's phone vibrated again.

A new message.

This time, there was no photograph.

Only a sentence.

*You found the trust. Congratulations. Now look at the back of the amendment.*

Marcus stopped.

He pulled out the document.

Turned it over.

And found a handwritten note beneath the official seal.

*The trustee is not Claire Reed.*

Below it was another name.

A name that made Marcus realize the entire family had been manipulated from the beginning.

*AVA REED — BY ORDER OF HER MOTHER, CLAIRE.*

May you like

And beneath that, in smaller handwriting:

*Claire is not the woman you think she is.*
