Chapter 1: The Little Girl Who Stopped the Wedding

“Daddy! DON’T SAY I DO! Mommy is under the pool!””
Six-year-old Ava’s scream tore through the wedding music.
Marcus Reed stood beneath a white floral arch, one hand holding a microphone, the other wrapped around Vanessa’s fingers. Three hundred guests turned toward the little girl running down the marble aisle in a white dress and tiny silver shoes.
Her cheeks were soaked with tears.
Her hair was tangled.
And her bare feet were bleeding.
For one frozen second, nobody moved.
Then Marcus dropped the microphone.
“Ava?”” he shouted.
The little girl crashed into his legs, clutching his expensive black trousers.
“Daddy, please! Mommy is down there! I saw her! She's not moving!””
Marcus dropped to his knees.
“What are you talking about, sweetheart?””
“Mommy! She's under the water!””
Behind him, Vanessa tightened her grip around his wrist.
“Marcus, don't.””
He turned.
His bride was still smiling.
But her fingers had dug so deeply into his skin that he could feel his pulse beating against her nails.
“Vanessa,” he said slowly, “let go.””
She leaned closer, keeping her smile fixed for the guests.
“If you walk away from this altar, I will throw your ring into that pool myself.””
Marcus looked toward the enormous swimming pool beyond the reception terrace.
The water was perfectly still.
A few white rose petals floated across its blue surface.
Then Ava whispered something that made his blood turn cold.
“Daddy, I saw Aunt Vanessa push Mommy.””
The smile disappeared from Vanessa's face.
And Marcus finally understood that his wedding was the least important thing happening that afternoon.
Twenty minutes earlier, everything had looked perfect.
The wedding was taking place at the Hawthorne Estate, a sprawling property outside Charleston, South Carolina.
Marcus had spent nearly eight months planning the ceremony.
He wanted something beautiful.
Something peaceful.
Something that would finally convince him that his family could be whole again.
His first marriage to Claire had ended three years earlier, after a long period of arguments, misunderstandings, and one particularly ugly custody dispute.
Their daughter, Ava, lived with Claire but spent weekends and holidays with him.
Vanessa had entered his life fourteen months earlier.
She was elegant, charming, and always knew exactly what to say.
She remembered Ava's favorite cartoons.
She bought her expensive dolls.
She even insisted that Ava be the flower girl at the wedding.
Marcus had believed that was proof of Vanessa's kindness.
He had been wrong about many things.
But he hadn't known that yet.
At the reception, Vanessa stood beside him in a fitted ivory gown, her diamond necklace catching the afternoon sunlight.
“Are you nervous?”” she whispered.
Marcus laughed.
“A little.””
“You don't have to be. Everything is going to be wonderful.””
She straightened his tie.
“After today, we're finally a real family.””
Marcus glanced toward the pool.
Ava was supposed to be with the wedding coordinator, helping distribute little baskets of flower petals.
“Where is Ava?””
Vanessa's expression changed for half a second.
“Probably playing somewhere. Children get bored.””
“She hasn't been around for a while.””
“Marcus, today is our wedding. Can we have one afternoon without worrying about Claire?””
He frowned.
“She's six. I worry about her.””
Vanessa sighed.
“Of course you do. That's what makes you such a wonderful father.””
She kissed his cheek.
But her eyes had already moved toward the far end of the garden.
Marcus followed her gaze.
A woman in a pale blue dress was standing near the glass doors.
Claire.
His ex-wife had arrived unexpectedly that morning.
She hadn't been invited to the wedding.
But because Ava was staying with Marcus that weekend, Claire had come to drop off the little girl's favorite stuffed rabbit and a small gift.
Marcus had thanked her.
They had exchanged a few polite words.
Then Claire had disappeared.
Vanessa had been furious.
She'd pulled Marcus aside and demanded to know why he had allowed Claire to come.
He'd told her not to make a scene.
Now, standing beside the altar, he noticed something strange.
Claire was nowhere to be seen.
Neither was Ava.
“Where did Claire go?”” he asked.
Vanessa adjusted her veil.
“I don't know.””
“Did you see her leave?””
“Marcus, please.””
Her voice was sweet, but her eyes were sharp.
“Can we just get married?””
The wedding officiant stepped forward.
“Ladies and gentlemen, if everyone could please take their seats.””
A soft melody began.
Guests stood.
The bridesmaids arranged their bouquets.
Marcus took Vanessa's hands.
The officiant smiled.
“Today, we gather to celebrate the union of two people who have chosen to build a life together.””
Marcus tried to smile.
Then the scream came.
“DADDY!””
Ava appeared at the far end of the terrace.
She was running so fast that she nearly slipped on the polished stone.
Marcus immediately stepped away from Vanessa.
“What happened?””
Ava pointed toward the pool.
“Mommy!””
Vanessa grabbed his arm.
“Don't listen to her. She's upset.””
Ava shook her head violently.
“Mommy is down there! I saw her!””
Marcus looked at the pool.
“Where?””
“Under the water!””
The guests began whispering.
Ava pulled at his jacket.
“Daddy, please! Mommy was holding something! Then she fell!””
Vanessa stepped between them.
“Sweetheart, you're confused.””
“No!”” Ava screamed.
“You pushed her!””
A terrible silence fell over the terrace.
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“What did she just say?””
Vanessa's jaw tightened.
“She doesn't understand what she's saying. Claire has been filling her head with nonsense for months.””
Ava began sobbing harder.
“I saw you, Aunt Vanessa!””
Vanessa crouched in front of the little girl.
“Listen to me, Ava. You're making everyone upset.””
Ava backed away.
“You told Mommy to go away!””
Vanessa stood.
“Marcus, this is ridiculous.””
He tried to move toward the pool.
She caught his wrist.
“If you leave this altar, we're finished.””
He stared at her.
“There's someone in that water.””
“You don't know that.””
“My daughter says her mother is drowning.””
“And I'm telling you she's lying!””
Marcus looked into Vanessa's eyes.
For the first time, he noticed something beneath the anger.
Fear.
Not fear for Claire.
Fear of what he might discover.
He pulled his wrist free.
Vanessa grabbed his hand again.
“Marcus, I swear, if you get in that water, I'll throw your ring in there and walk out of this wedding.””
He looked down at the expensive diamond ring on her finger.
Then he looked at Ava.
His daughter was shaking so badly that her knees seemed ready to give way.
Marcus made his decision.
He removed his wedding jacket.
Dropped it onto the nearest chair.
And ran.
“CALL 911!”” he shouted.
He reached the edge of the pool, kicked off his shoes, and dove into the water.
The cold hit him like a punch.
He opened his eyes beneath the surface.
At first, all he saw was blue.
Then sunlight flickered across the white tiles.
He kicked downward.
The pool was deeper than it looked.
Six feet.
Then seven.
His fingers brushed something near the bottom.
A piece of white fabric.
Marcus turned.
And saw a woman's hand.
Her fingers were spread against the tiles.
Her blue dress floated around her like a cloud.
“Claire!””
He pushed through the water.
His lungs were already burning.
He reached her shoulder.
Then he saw something else.
A thick silver chain was wrapped around her ankle.
And the other end was attached to a heavy metal weight lying on the pool floor.
Marcus's heart seemed to stop.
This wasn't an accident.
Someone had tied her down.
He grabbed the chain.
It wouldn't move.
He pulled harder.
Nothing.
His lungs screamed for air.
Then he noticed a small metal object beside Claire's hand.
A phone.
Its screen was still glowing.
A message was visible.
*IF HE FINDS OUT WHAT YOU DID, WE BOTH GO TO PRISON.*
Marcus stared at the words.
Before he could understand them, Claire's fingers moved.
Barely.
But they moved.
He grabbed her hand.
He wasn't leaving her there.
Not again.
Not ever.
He wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled.
The chain scraped against the tiles.
The weight shifted.
And finally, the metal clasp snapped.
Marcus kicked upward with everything he had.
His lungs felt ready to burst.
The surface seemed impossibly far away.
But he kept going.
He broke through the water with Claire in his arms.
“HELP!””
Two wedding guests rushed forward.
A security guard jumped into the pool.
Together, they dragged Claire onto the stone deck.
Marcus rolled her onto her back.
“Claire! Claire, can you hear me?””
Her lips were blue.
Her eyes were closed.
Ava ran toward them, screaming.
“Mommy!””
Marcus began chest compressions.
“Come on, Claire. Stay with me.””
The wedding guests stood frozen.
Someone was crying.
Someone else was shouting for the ambulance.
Then Claire coughed.
Water spilled from her mouth.
She sucked in a ragged breath.
Marcus nearly collapsed.
“Claire?””
Her eyelids fluttered.
She looked at him.
Then her gaze moved over his shoulder.
Her face changed.
“No,” she whispered.
Marcus leaned closer.
“What?””
Claire's fingers closed around his wrist.
“Don't let her near Ava.””
Marcus turned.
Vanessa was standing several feet away.
Her wedding dress was wet at the hem.
May you like
And in her hand was something that didn't belong to her.
Claire's wedding ring.
