Chapter 9: The Final Hidden Truth
Daniel stared at his phone.
Nobody needed to ask.
Everyone knew something else had happened.
“What does it say?”” my father asked.
Daniel didn’t answer.
He looked at Claire.
That scared me more than anything.
Because after everything she had admitted, after every secret had been dragged into the light, my brother still looked like there was something worse.
Claire noticed.
“What did you receive?””
Daniel held up the phone.
“Who else knows about this?””
Her face changed.
“I don’t know.””
“Don’t lie.””
“I’m not.””
Michael stepped closer.
“Let me see.””
Daniel handed him the phone.
Michael read the message.
His expression immediately changed.
“You know that number?””
Daniel asked.
“No.””
But he looked at Claire.
And Claire looked afraid.
“What?”” Daniel demanded.
Michael shook his head.
“I don’t understand.””
“Understand what?””
“That message.””
He looked at Claire.
“It sounds like someone who knows the whole story.””
The ballroom had become a courtroom.
Everyone was a witness.
Everyone was waiting.
Then Claire’s phone rang.
She looked down.
And froze.
Daniel noticed.
“Who is it?””
She didn’t answer.
“Claire.””
Her hand trembled as she showed him the screen.
Unknown caller.
My brother stared.
“Answer it.””
She looked terrified.
“Daniel…”
“Answer it.””
Slowly, she pressed the button.
“Hello?””
For several seconds, there was only silence.
Then a man’s voice came through.
Claire’s face went white.
“No.””
Daniel watched her.
“Who is it?””
She couldn’t speak.
The voice on the phone said:
“Hello, Claire.””
Everyone heard it.
Daniel took the phone from her hand.
“Who is this?””
The man didn’t answer.
Then he said:
“I think you know exactly who I am.””
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“Name.””
A pause.
Then:
“Tyler.””
Claire covered her mouth.
The room erupted.
The man she believed was gone.
The man she had escaped.
The man connected to her first marriage.
He was alive.
Daniel held the phone tightly.
“You’re supposed to be divorced.””
A low laugh came through the speaker.
“Is that what she told you?””
Claire whispered:
“No.””
Tyler continued.
“She never told you much, did she?””
Daniel looked at his wife.
“Why are you calling?””
“I wanted to congratulate you.””
Daniel frowned.
“On what?””
“Your marriage.””
Silence.
Tyler laughed.
“You built a beautiful life with my wife.””
Daniel’s face hardened.
“She is not your wife.””
“Oh, she is.””
The words were calm.
Confident.
“I have the documents.””
Michael stepped closer.
“Daniel, don’t listen to him.””
Tyler heard.
“Michael?””
Everyone froze.
“You’re there too?””
Michael looked shocked.
“How do you know me?””
Tyler laughed.
“Because I know everything.””
The call ended.
Just like that.
Daniel stared at the phone.
Nobody spoke.
Then Claire whispered:
“He’s lying.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Is he?””
“Yes.””
“Are you sure?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I left him.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
Claire went quiet.
Daniel’s face broke slightly.
Because he didn’t need another confession.
He already knew.
There was still something missing.
Michael looked at the others.
“We need to verify the records.””
Daniel nodded.
“Tonight.””
“Daniel…”
“No.””
He looked at Claire.
“No more waiting. No more secrets.””
Claire looked devastated.
“I was trying to protect you.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You keep saying that.””
“I was.””
“But you were protecting yourself too.””
She looked away.
Because she knew he was right.
Hours later, after the party had ended and the hotel ballroom was empty, Daniel, Michael, and I sat together going through every document Claire had hidden.
The fake pregnancy.
The medical records.
The marriage paperwork.
The letters.
Piece by piece.
The truth became clearer.
Then Michael found something.
A small note attached to Ryan’s old documents.
He read it silently.
Then his face changed.
“What?””
Michael handed it to Daniel.
My brother read it.
Then he looked at Claire.
“What did Ryan mean by this?””
Claire looked terrified.
“I don’t know.””
Daniel held the note.
“It says Ryan found proof that Tyler wasn’t your first husband.””
Claire stared.
“What?””
Michael looked at the old paperwork.
“He found another name.””
Daniel turned the page.
And everyone went silent.
Because underneath Tyler’s name was another marriage record.
Another husband.
Another secret.
Claire whispered:
“That’s impossible.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Claire.””
She stared at the document.
Then she said the words none of us expected.
“I don’t know that man.””
And that was the most terrifying part.
Because if Claire was telling the truth…
May you like
Someone else had been controlling her life from the shadows.
And they had been watching her for years.
