Chapter 7: The Letter He Never Sent

Daniel held the envelope like it was something alive.

Something dangerous.

His name was written across the front in handwriting none of us recognized.

But Claire recognized it.

That was obvious.

The second she saw it, every trace of color disappeared from her face.

“Daniel,” she whispered.

My brother looked at her.

“What?””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

That was becoming the pattern of the night.

Every question.

Every secret.

Every piece of truth.

And Claire always had the same response.

Silence.

Michael stepped closer.

“I found it three days ago.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Where?””

“In my mother’s house.””

“And Ryan wrote my name on it?””

Michael nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Michael looked toward Claire.

“She knows.””

Daniel turned.

“Claire?””

Her hands shook.

“I didn’t know he wrote that.””

“You knew he knew about me?””

Claire looked down.

“Yes.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Start talking.””

The entire room waited.

Even the people who had spent the evening judging her were now listening.

Because everyone understood something.

The fake pregnancy wasn’t the only lie.

The affair wasn’t the only betrayal.

There was a story before all of this.

A story Claire had buried.

She slowly sat down.

“I met Ryan when I was twenty-four.””

Nobody spoke.

“He was the first person who made me feel safe.””

Her voice became softer.

“We were supposed to get married. We had plans. A house. A future.””

Daniel looked at the photograph in his hand.

“Then he died.””

Claire nodded.

“And I spent years trying to understand how someone could disappear from your life but still be everywhere.””

She touched her wedding ring.

“When I met you, Daniel, I was happy again.””

My brother looked away.

“But?””

Claire closed her eyes.

“But I was scared.””

“Of what?””

“That if you knew everything about me, you wouldn’t want me.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You keep saying that like it explains anything.””

“I know.””

“No.””

His voice hardened.

“You don’t.””

Claire looked at him.

“You had a chance to tell me before we got married.””

“I did.””

“You didn’t.””

“I was going to.””

“When?””

She had no answer.

Daniel looked down at the envelope.

“Why did Ryan write to me?””

Claire swallowed.

“I don’t know.””

Michael finally spoke.

“Ryan knew about you.””

Daniel looked at him.

“How?””

“Because Claire told him.””

The room shifted.

Daniel turned toward his wife.

“You stayed in contact with him?””

“No.””

Claire immediately shook her head.

“Not like that.””

“Then how?””

Michael answered.

“Ryan found out about you after he was diagnosed.””

Daniel froze.

“Diagnosed with what?””

“His illness.””

The room became quiet.

Michael continued.

“Ryan knew he wasn’t going to have much time.””

Claire looked down.

“He wanted to make sure I would be okay.””

Daniel looked confused.

“By writing to me?””

Michael nodded.

“He wanted to tell you something.””

“What?””

Michael looked at the envelope.

“That Claire wasn’t the person she thought she was.””

Daniel frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Michael took a breath.

“Ryan knew Claire carried guilt.””

Claire closed her eyes.

“Michael.””

But he continued.

“He knew she blamed herself for things that weren’t her fault.””

Daniel looked at his wife.

“What things?””

Claire whispered:

“Ryan’s accident.””

Everyone went still.

Daniel stared.

“What accident?””

Claire looked like she had been holding this pain for years.

“He died in a car accident.””

“I know.””

“But I was the reason he was driving that night.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Why?””

Claire’s voice trembled.

“We had a fight.””

She looked at the floor.

“I told him I didn’t want to marry him anymore.””

Michael looked surprised.

“What?””

Claire nodded.

“I was scared.””

“Scared of what?”” Daniel asked.

“Of losing myself.””

Nobody understood.

She continued.

“Ryan was a good man. Too good. Everyone loved him. Everyone thought I was lucky.””

A tear fell.

“But I felt like I was disappearing.””

Daniel watched her.

“So you left?””

“I asked for time.””

“And that night?””

“He drove away.””

Claire covered her face.

“The accident happened an hour later.””

Silence.

Michael looked down.

“Ryan never blamed her.””

Claire shook her head.

“But I blamed myself.””

Daniel’s anger softened.

But the hurt remained.

“So you carried this guilt into our marriage.””

“Yes.””

“And you thought lying would protect me?””

Claire whispered:

“Yes.””

Daniel looked at the envelope.

Then he opened it.

Inside was a single folded letter.

His hands trembled slightly as he unfolded it.

The handwriting was uneven.

Old.

The room was silent as he read.

After a few seconds, his face changed.

Not anger.

Shock.

He looked at Claire.

“What did Ryan mean by this?””

Nobody answered.

Daniel held the letter.

“He wrote that I deserved to know the truth about the woman I married.””

Claire closed her eyes.

Michael looked away.

Daniel kept reading.

Then he stopped.

Because one sentence had clearly shaken him.

“What?””

My brother looked at Claire.

“He wrote that you were protecting me from something.””

Claire went completely still.

Daniel lowered the letter.

“What were you protecting me from?””

Claire whispered:

“I don’t know.””

But Michael did.

And his expression told me everything.

He knew.

Daniel saw it.

“You know.””

Michael didn’t respond.

“You know what this means.””

Michael looked at Claire.

Then at Daniel.

Finally, he said:

“Ryan found out something before he died.””

“What?””

Michael’s voice dropped.

“He found out Claire’s first marriage was never legally ended.””

The room went silent.

Daniel stared.

“First marriage?””

Claire started crying.

“Daniel…”

He stepped back.

“No.””

His voice was barely a whisper.

“No, there is no way.””

Michael looked at him.

“Ryan discovered the paperwork.””

Daniel looked at Claire.

“Are you married?””

May you like

Claire couldn’t answer.

And that was answer enough.
