Chapter 6: The Marriage That Was Built on a Lie

Nobody recognized the man in the photograph.

That made it worse.

If it had been Michael, maybe the betrayal would have had a beginning and an end.

A mistake.

A moment of weakness.

Something painful but understandable.

But this was different.

This was someone from before.

Someone Claire had never mentioned.

Daniel stared at the picture.

“Who is he?””

Claire didn’t answer.

“Who is he?””

Her hands shook.

“Daniel…”

“Don’t.””

His voice was quiet.

“Not another explanation.””

The room waited.

Claire looked at the photograph.

Then she looked at him.

“His name is Ryan.””

“Ryan who?””

She swallowed.

“Ryan Miller.””

Daniel stared.

“Why does he matter?””

Claire looked like she was searching for words.

But there were no words left that could protect her.

“He was my fiancé.””

The room exploded with whispers.

My mother looked shocked.

My father turned toward Claire.

“Your fiancé?””

Claire nodded slowly.

“Before Daniel.””

My brother looked confused.

“Before me?””

“Yes.””

“Then why is this a secret?””

Claire closed her eyes.

“Because I never told you everything about that time.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“Apparently you never told me anything.””

Claire looked down.

“Ryan and I were together for five years.””

“Five years?””

“Yes.””

“And you were engaged?””

She nodded.

“Then what happened?””

Her face changed.

Pain replaced fear.

“He died.””

The anger in the room softened.

Only slightly.

Daniel looked surprised.

“When?””

“Three years before I met you.””

“And you never told me?””

“I tried.””

“When?””

“Early in our relationship.””

“Then why don’t I know?””

Claire looked away.

“Because I stopped talking about him.””

“Why?””

“Because everyone told me I needed to move on.””

Daniel looked at the picture again.

“But you kept this.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Claire touched her chest.

“Because he was part of my life.””

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Daniel asked:

“Is that all?””

Claire looked at him.

“What?””

“Is that the secret?””

She hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

Daniel closed his eyes.

“There’s more.””

“No.””

“Claire.””

She looked terrified.

“I don’t know how to explain.””

“Try.””

She sat down slowly.

“I didn’t know how to tell you because I thought you would think I was broken.””

Daniel stared at her.

“I married you because I loved you.””

“I know.””

“Then why did you spend our entire marriage hiding from me?””

Claire began crying again.

“Because after Ryan died, I changed.””

“How?””

“I became afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

“Losing people.””

Daniel looked at her.

“So you lied to keep people?””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

The honesty almost hurt more.

Michael stood quietly near the doors.

He looked like he wanted to leave.

But Daniel noticed.

“You knew all of this?””

Michael shook his head.

“No.””

“Then what did you know?””

Michael looked uncomfortable.

“I knew about Ryan.””

Claire looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because I saw the letters.””

Daniel turned.

“What letters?””

Claire went completely still.

Michael realized too late.

“What letters?””

He looked at Claire.

She didn’t answer.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Claire.””

The room held its breath.

“Where are the letters?””

Claire looked at him.

Then she whispered:

“At home.””

“From Ryan?””

“Yes.””

“How many?””

Her silence answered.

Daniel looked devastated.

“How many?””

Claire wiped her face.

“Twenty-three.””

Nobody moved.

Twenty-three letters from a dead fiancé.

Twenty-three pieces of a life Daniel never knew existed.

Then Daniel asked the question that changed everything.

“Why did Michael know about them?””

Claire looked at Michael.

Michael looked away.

And suddenly, I realized something.

The affair wasn’t the only connection between them.

There was another secret.

Another reason Michael had shown up tonight.

Daniel saw it too.

“Claire.””

She didn’t respond.

“Why did Michael know about Ryan’s letters?””

Michael finally spoke.

“Because…”

He stopped.

Claire whispered:

“Because Ryan was my brother.””

The room went silent.

Daniel looked between them.

“What?””

Michael took a breath.

“My full name is Michael Miller.””

Daniel stared.

“Ryan’s brother?””

Michael nodded.

“And I didn’t come here because of the baby.””

He looked at Claire.

“I came because I found something in Ryan’s old belongings.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“What?””

Michael reached into his bag.

He pulled out an envelope.

Old.

Yellowed.

Sealed.

With Daniel’s name written across the front.

My brother stared at it.

“I don’t understand.””

Michael handed it to him.

“Ryan wrote this before he died.””

Daniel looked at the envelope.

Then at Claire.

“Why is my name on this?””

Nobody answered.

May you like

Because Claire already knew.

And from the fear on her face, I knew whatever was inside that envelope would change everything again.
