Chapter 8: The Wife Who Wasn’t Free

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The question sat between them.

Are you married?

Daniel looked at Claire like he was waiting for her to laugh.

To deny it.

To say this had all gone too far.

But she didn’t.

That was the worst part.

She just cried.

My brother slowly shook his head.

“I don’t believe this.””

“Daniel…”

“No.””

He raised his hand.

“Don’t say my name like everything is normal.””

Claire wiped her face.

“I can explain.””

He gave a painful smile.

“Of course you can.””

She looked at him.

“I was young.””

“That’s your explanation?””

“No.””

“Then what?””

Claire looked down.

“When I was nineteen, I married someone.””

Everyone stared.

“Nineteen?””

She nodded.

“It was a mistake.””

Daniel laughed quietly.

“A mistake that lasted how long?””

“Three months.””

“And you never divorced him?””

“I thought I did.””

The room went silent.

Daniel frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Claire took a deep breath.

“I filed the paperwork.””

“Thought you did?””

“I moved away. I never heard anything again.””

Michael stepped forward.

“Because the divorce was never finalized.””

Claire looked at him.

“I didn’t know.””

Daniel stared.

“How do you not know if you’re divorced?””

“I was nineteen. I was terrified. I left everything behind.””

“You left everything behind?””

His voice rose.

“You left a husband behind?””

“No.””

Claire shook her head.

“I left someone who hurt me.””

The anger in the room shifted.

Daniel looked uncertain.

“What happened?””

Claire looked at the floor.

“His name was Tyler.””

Her hands tightened.

“He wasn’t who I thought he was.””

“What did he do?””

She didn’t answer immediately.

Then she whispered:

“He controlled everything.””

The room became quiet.

“He controlled my money. My friends. Where I went.””

Claire looked up.

“I finally left when I realized I was becoming someone I didn’t recognize.””

Daniel softened.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I was ashamed.””

“That’s not enough.””

“I know.””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You keep hiding behind pain.””

Claire looked hurt.

“Because I was in pain.””

“And I would have helped you.””

That sentence broke her.

She started crying harder.

“I know.””

Daniel looked away.

“And now?””

Claire whispered:

“I found out two months ago.””

“Two months?””

“Yes.””

“And you still married me?””

“I didn’t know what to do.””

“You were already married.””

“I thought it was just paperwork.””

Daniel stared.

“Paperwork?””

Claire looked down.

“I loved you.””

The words hurt more because they sounded true.

That was the most difficult thing.

Claire had lied.

But she had also loved him.

Both things existed at the same time.

Michael spoke quietly.

“Ryan found out after he helped Claire look into her past.””

Daniel turned.

“Why was Ryan looking?””

“Because Claire asked him.””

Everyone looked at Claire.

She explained:

“After I lost the baby…”

She stopped.

Then corrected herself.

“After the miscarriage, I started questioning everything.””

Daniel looked at her.

“I found old documents.””

“And?””

“I found Tyler’s name.””

Michael nodded.

“Ryan helped her search records.””

Daniel looked at him.

“And that’s when he found the marriage.””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””

Michael looked down.

“Because Ryan died before he could.””

Daniel looked at the letter.

His expression changed.

“He knew.””

Michael nodded.

“He wanted to tell you.””

Daniel looked at Claire.

“But you stopped him.””

Claire shook her head quickly.

“No.””

“Then why didn’t he?””

Michael hesitated.

“Because he wanted to protect you.””

Daniel looked confused.

“Protect me?””

“He knew you loved Claire.””

Claire covered her face.

“He told me that you were the kind of man who would forgive her.””

Daniel looked at her.

“And you didn’t believe that?””

“I was afraid.””

The same answer.

Again.

Daniel turned away.

The room was silent until Sophie’s small voice broke through.

“Does Aunt Claire have to go away?””

Everyone looked at her.

Emma immediately whispered:

“Sophie.””

But Daniel crouched down.

“I don’t know.””

The little girl looked sad.

“She made mistakes.””

Daniel looked at Claire.

“Yes.””

“But people can say sorry.””

He looked at Sophie.

“Yes.””

“Then why are you mad?””

Nobody had an answer.

Because a child saw something adults forgot.

People could be wrong and still be human.

Daniel stood slowly.

“I need to think.””

Claire stepped toward him.

“Daniel.””

He stopped.

“I love you.””

His eyes closed.

For a second, I thought he might turn around.

But he didn’t.

“I loved you too.””

The word “too” destroyed her.

Then his phone rang.

Everyone looked at it.

Daniel glanced down.

Unknown number.

He almost ignored it.

Almost.

Then he saw the message preview.

His face changed.

“What?””

I looked at him.

“What happened?””

Daniel read the screen again.

Then he slowly turned toward Claire.

May you like

The message contained only one sentence.

*Your wife is not the only person who lied about the past.*
