Chapter 5: The Truth Claire Buried

The ballroom was no longer a place of celebration.

The golden lights still shone above us.

The flowers were still arranged perfectly.

The birthday cake still sat untouched near the stage.

But the night was gone.

Everything beautiful had become a reminder of what had been destroyed.

Daniel held the medical records in his hand.

His eyes never left Claire.

“What condition?””

Claire looked terrified.

Not because she had been exposed.

Because now everyone knew she had been carrying another secret.

Michael answered quietly.

“The doctors found complications during the pregnancy.””

Daniel looked at him.

“You’re not her husband.””

Michael nodded.

“I know.””

“Then why are you explaining this?””

“Because Claire couldn’t.””

Daniel looked at his wife.

“Is that true?””

Claire wiped her tears.

“Yes.””

“How long have you known?””

She didn’t answer.

Daniel stepped back.

“How long?””

“Three weeks.””

My brother stared.

“Three weeks?””

Claire nodded.

“I was waiting for the right time.””

“There is no right time for something like this.””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

Daniel’s voice was exhausted.

“You keep saying you know, but you keep choosing the same thing.””

Claire looked like she wanted to defend herself.

But she couldn’t.

Because every excuse had already been used.

My father finally spoke.

“Claire, why didn’t you tell anyone?””

She looked at him.

“Because I didn’t want people to look at the baby differently.””

My mother frowned.

“The baby?””

Claire nodded.

“I didn’t want him to become a diagnosis.””

The room became quiet.

And for the first time that night, I saw something different in Claire.

Not innocence.

Not forgiveness.

Fear.

Real fear.

She wasn’t afraid of losing her marriage anymore.

She was afraid of losing the child.

Daniel noticed too.

His expression softened slightly.

But only slightly.

“Is the baby okay?””

Claire looked at him.

The question seemed to hurt her more than anger would have.

“I don’t know.””

“What does that mean?””

“The doctors aren’t sure.””

Michael looked down.

“They need more tests.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

For a moment, I thought he might walk away.

But then Sophie tugged on his jacket.

“Uncle Daniel?””

He looked down.

“Yes?””

She held her stuffed rabbit.

“Are you still going to be a daddy?””

Nobody expected that question.

Daniel’s face broke.

He looked away.

Because he couldn’t answer.

Sophie didn’t understand the details.

She only understood that someone she loved was hurting.

Daniel knelt beside her.

“I don’t know, sweetheart.””

The little girl frowned.

“But you wanted to.””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then maybe you can still love the baby.””

A tear rolled down my brother’s cheek.

He quickly wiped it away.

But everyone saw.

Claire saw.

And I think that was the first moment she realized Daniel’s pain wasn’t because the baby wasn’t biologically his.

It was because she had taken away his choice.

Daniel stood.

He looked at Claire.

“I need to ask you something.””

She nodded.

“Anything.””

“When did you decide to fake the pregnancy?””

Claire looked down.

“I didn’t decide all at once.””

“Explain.””

She took a shaky breath.

“After the miscarriage, I couldn’t face you.””

“Why?””

“Because every time you looked happy, I felt worse.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“So you bought the fake bump.””

Claire nodded.

“I thought I would tell you eventually.””

“Eventually?””

“I kept waiting for the right moment.””

“And tonight?””

Claire looked around.

“At this party?””

She started crying.

“I wanted one normal night.””

That sentence seemed to anger him more than anything.

“One normal night?””

“Yes.””

“Claire, my father’s birthday was supposed to be normal.””

She looked down.

“You’re right.””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You don’t get to say that and make it better.””

The silence returned.

Then Michael spoke.

“There’s something else.””

Everyone looked at him.

Claire’s face changed.

“No.””

Michael looked at her.

“He needs to know.””

Daniel turned.

“What?””

Michael hesitated.

Then he said:

“The pregnancy wasn’t the only thing Claire lied about.””

Claire’s eyes widened.

“Michael, stop.””

But he continued.

“She didn’t just hide the affair.””

Daniel looked between them.

“What else?””

Michael reached into the folder.

He pulled out a photograph.

Not a medical document.

A picture.

He handed it to Daniel.

My brother looked at it.

Then his face went completely blank.

I couldn’t see the image from where I stood.

“What is it?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

“Daniel?””

Slowly, he turned the photograph around.

And my stomach dropped.

Because the picture showed Claire.

Standing outside a courthouse.

Holding hands with another man.

A man none of us had ever seen.

May you like

And written on the back of the photograph was a date.

A date from two years before Daniel and Claire got married.
