Chapter 9: The Bodyguard’s Impossible Secret

For six years, Dante had stood beside Ricardo Vale.

He had protected him from bullets.

From enemies.

From betrayal.

But now he was standing in the center of the room, staring at a photograph that made him look like the greatest traitor of all.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The picture was old.

The edges were worn.

But the image was clear.

Elena.

Baby Clara.

And Dante.

Together.

Ricardo stared at his closest friend.

His voice was barely above a whisper.

“Explain.””

Dante didn’t answer.

That silence hurt more than any confession could have.

Ricardo’s expression hardened.

“Dante.””

The bodyguard looked down.

“I knew this day would come.””

Clara stood near the doorway, frozen.

Her eyes moved between them.

“You knew my mother?””

Dante closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

Ricardo stepped closer.

“Not just knew.””

His voice carried years of pain.

“You were there.””

Dante nodded.

“I was.””

The room felt colder.

Ricardo had trusted Dante with his life.

With his businesses.

With Elena.

And now he wondered if the man beside him had been part of the lie all along.

“Why?”” Ricardo asked.

Dante looked at Clara.

“Because your mother asked me to.””

That answer only made Ricardo angrier.

“Elena asked you to hide my daughter?””

“No.””

Dante shook his head.

“She asked me to save her.””

The truth came out slowly.

Six years ago, after Elena discovered Victor had changed the hospital records, she realized something terrifying.

Victor was not working alone.

Someone inside Ricardo’s organization was helping him.

Someone with access.

Someone who could erase records, move people, and make problems disappear.

Elena didn’t know who.

So she trusted only one person.

Dante.

“She called me the night before everything happened,” Dante said.

Ricardo stared at him.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Dante looked broken.

“Because I thought I failed her.””

Clara listened silently.

Dante continued.

“Elena told me if anything happened to her, I had to take Clara somewhere safe.””

Ricardo’s hands tightened.

“You had my daughter.””

Dante nodded.

“For three days.””

The room went silent.

“Three days?””

“Yes.””

Ricardo’s voice cracked with anger.

“And you never told me?””

Dante looked at him.

“Because on the third day, someone came looking for her.””

“Who?””

Dante hesitated.

Then said:

“Your own brother.””

Ricardo froze.

“My brother is dead.””

Dante shook his head.

“Your half-brother, Marco.””

The name hit Ricardo like a memory he buried.

Marco Vale.

The man everyone thought disappeared years ago.

The man who hated Ricardo because their father chose Ricardo as his successor.

“What does Marco have to do with Victor?””

Dante looked down.

“They were working together.””

Clara stepped forward.

“Then why didn’t you take me to my father?””

Dante looked at her.

A painful expression crossed his face.

“Because Elena gave me one final instruction.””

“What?””

Dante swallowed.

“She said if Ricardo found out too soon, he would go after them.””

Ricardo frowned.

“And?””

Dante looked at him.

“She knew you.””

The words hurt.

“She knew you would burn the whole city down trying to protect her.””

Ricardo said nothing.

Because he knew Elena was right.

He would have.

“I kept you hidden because I thought I was protecting you.””

Clara looked away.

“I grew up without knowing anyone.””

Dante lowered his head.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

Her voice was quiet.

“You all made choices for me.””

Nobody responded.

Because nobody could deny it.

Then Ricardo noticed something.

A detail in the photograph.

Something he had missed before.

Behind Elena and Dante was a building.

A hospital.

But not the one where Elena supposedly died.

“Where was this taken?””

Dante looked at the picture.

His face changed.

“That’s impossible.””

“Where?””

Dante pointed.

“St. Catherine’s Hospital.””

Ricardo frowned.

“That hospital closed six years ago.””

“Yes.””

“Why were Elena and Clara there?””

Dante went silent.

Then he whispered:

“Because that was where Elena went after the accident.””

Ricardo froze.

“What accident?””

Dante looked at him.

“The accident everyone told you killed her.””

The room became completely still.

Dante continued.

“She survived.””

Ricardo’s heart stopped.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“That’s impossible.””

“I saw her.””

Ricardo stepped back.

His entire world shifted.

“You saw Elena alive?””

Dante nodded.

“For eleven hours.””

Clara covered her mouth.

“Eleven hours?””

Dante looked at Ricardo.

“She was waiting for you.””

The words destroyed him.

Ricardo’s eyes filled with disbelief.

“Why didn’t you call me?””

Dante looked away.

“Because when I reached for my phone…”

He stopped.

“Someone was already inside the hospital.””

“Who?””

Dante’s face hardened.

“Someone wearing your family ring.””

Ricardo stared.

“My ring?””

Dante nodded.

“The one only you and your brother owned.””

A sudden sound interrupted them.

A gunshot.

The mansion windows shattered.

Everyone dropped.

Dante pulled Clara down.

Ricardo moved toward the hallway.

The attack lasted seconds.

Then silence returned.

A guard rushed in.

“Boss!””

Ricardo turned.

“What?””

The guard held a message.

“No one got inside.””

Ricardo opened it.

Only one sentence was written.

You finally found the missing hours.

His blood ran cold.

Because there was a signature underneath.

Not Victor.

Not Marco.

Someone else.

Someone who had been hiding longer.

May you like

The name was written clearly.

Elena Vale.
