Chapter 2: The Secret Hidden in Elena’s Necklace

Ricardo Vale had faced guns pointed at his head.

He had walked into enemy territory knowing he might never walk out.

But nothing had prepared him for the way his hands shook when he looked at Clara Bennett.

Because Dante was right.

He had noticed it the second he allowed himself to look.

The eyes.

The shape of her smile.

The quiet sadness she carried without realizing it.

She reminded him of Elena.

His Elena.

The woman he lost six years ago.

The woman whose death had destroyed the only soft part of him.

Clara looked between the two men.

“Why are you looking at me like that?””

Ricardo didn’t answer immediately.

His mind was trapped somewhere else.

A hospital room.

A cold night.

A promise he made to a dying woman.

“Protect our child, Ricardo.””

Elena’s voice still haunted him.

He had failed.

Or at least, he thought he had.

“Boss,” Dante whispered.

Ricardo looked away.

“Not here.””

Clara frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Ricardo stood.

His entire presence changed.

The restaurant immediately became tense.

The feared businessman returned.

“Clara, I need to ask you some questions.””

She looked at Leo, who was peacefully sleeping in her arms.

“You’re not taking him away, are you?””

The question surprised Ricardo.

Because she wasn’t afraid for herself.

She was worried about his child.

“No,” Ricardo said quietly.

“I’m not.””

Clara carefully handed Leo back.

Their fingers touched for a second.

Something about the moment felt strangely familiar.

Like a memory neither of them understood.

Outside the restaurant, rain covered the streets.

Ricardo’s black car waited by the curb.

Dante stood beside him, unusually silent.

“You’re sure?”” Ricardo asked.

Dante looked at him.

“I carried Elena’s bags. I opened doors for her. I protected her for years.””

His voice lowered.

“I know that necklace.””

Ricardo stared through the restaurant window.

Clara was inside, cleaning tables after her shift.

“She said it belonged to her mother.””

Dante shook his head.

“Elena never gave that necklace away.””

Ricardo’s jaw tightened.

“Then explain it.””

Dante had no answer.

And that scared Ricardo more than anything.

An hour later, Clara sat across from Ricardo in a private room at his mansion.

She looked uncomfortable surrounded by marble floors, expensive paintings, and armed guards.

“This is excessive,” she said.

Ricardo almost smiled.

“Most people say it’s impressive.””

“I’m not most people.””

He believed her.

For the first time in years, someone spoke to him without wanting something.

“Tell me about your mother.””

Clara looked down.

“Her name was Maria Bennett.””

“Where did she live?””

“Queens.””

“When did she die?””

Clara’s expression changed.

“She died when I was twelve.””

Ricardo studied her carefully.

“How?””

“A car accident.””

Silence filled the room.

Dante stood near the door.

His eyes never left Clara.

“Did she ever tell you anything about your father?””

Clara looked confused.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

She laughed softly.

“My mother said he was a mistake she never regretted.””

Ricardo froze.

A mistake.

That was exactly how Elena’s enemies had described him.

A dangerous mistake.

Clara continued.

“She never talked about him much. She only said he was someone who loved her, but couldn’t protect her.””

Ricardo looked down.

Those words hurt.

Because they were true.

“I’m sorry,” Clara said suddenly.

He looked up.

“For what?””

“I don’t know.””

She shrugged.

“You look like someone who carries a lot of guilt.””

Ricardo said nothing.

Because she was right.

Later that night, Dante entered Ricardo’s office carrying an old photograph.

Ricardo looked up.

“What is it?””

Dante placed it on the desk.

“I found something.””

Ricardo picked up the photo.

It showed Elena.

Six years younger.

Pregnant.

Standing beside another woman.

Maria Bennett.

Ricardo’s blood turned cold.

“Where did you get this?””

“From the old files.””

“There were no files.””

Dante hesitated.

“That’s the problem.””

Ricardo stood.

“What are you saying?””

Dante took a breath.

“Someone removed them.””

The room became silent.

Someone had erased Elena’s pregnancy.

Someone had hidden a child.

Someone had lied to Ricardo Vale.

“Who knew about Elena?”” Ricardo asked.

Dante’s face became serious.

“Only the people closest to you.””

Ricardo looked toward the window.

The city lights blurred.

His wife had died.

His child had vanished.

And someone inside his own world had made sure he never knew.

Then his phone rang.

The number was unknown.

Ricardo answered.

“Who is this?””

A man’s voice came through.

“You should stop asking questions about Clara Bennett.””

Ricardo’s expression hardened.

“Who are you?””

The caller laughed.

“You really don’t remember?””

A pause.

Then the voice whispered:

“Your wife begged me to save her daughter.””

Ricardo’s hand tightened around the phone.

“My wife had no daughter.””

The man laughed again.

“You’re still believing the lie.””

The call ended.

Ricardo stared at the screen.

Dante stepped closer.

“Boss?””

Ricardo slowly turned around.

His face had gone pale.

Because for the first time in six years, he wondered if Elena’s death had never been an accident.

May you like

And if Clara wasn’t just connected to his past…

She was the reason someone had tried to destroy it.
