Chapter 7: The Night Elena Disappeared
Ricardo had spent years trying to forget one night.
The night Elena died.
The night his world collapsed.
Now he realized he might have remembered it wrong.
The photograph sat on the table.
Victor standing beside Elena.
Baby Clara in her arms.
The image was impossible.
Because Victor had told Ricardo he was nowhere near them that night.
A lie.
Another lie.
Clara looked at him.
“He was there.””
Ricardo nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“And you trusted him.””
The accusation was quiet.
That made it worse.
Ricardo looked away.
“Yes.””
Clara hugged herself.
“How many people knew?””
Ricardo didn’t answer.
Because the answer terrified him.
Too many.
Dante found the woman from the call within hours.
Her name was Sofia Ramirez.
She had worked as Elena’s personal assistant.
The woman arrived at the estate trembling.
When she saw Ricardo, she immediately cried.
“I’m sorry.””
Ricardo stared at her.
“For what?””
“For not telling you.””
“Tell me now.””
Sofia looked at Clara.
Then at the necklace.
“She kept it.””
Ricardo frowned.
“What?””
“The necklace.””
Sofia touched her own chest.
“Elena said it was the only thing that could prove the truth.””
Clara stepped closer.
“What truth?””
Sofia took a deep breath.
“Your mother was never running away from Ricardo.””
She looked at him.
“She was running away from Victor.””
Sofia explained everything.
Victor had become obsessed with Elena before she married Ricardo.
He believed he deserved her.
When Elena became pregnant, Victor discovered the child might not survive because of complications.
He used that fear.
He convinced Elena that Ricardo’s enemies would target the baby.
“He offered to help her disappear,” Sofia said.
Ricardo’s face hardened.
“And she believed him.””
“She believed he was protecting Clara.””
Sofia looked down.
“But Victor had another plan.””
“What plan?””
Sofia’s eyes filled with tears.
“He wanted Elena to leave Ricardo forever.””
Silence.
Clara looked at Ricardo.
“And my mother?””
Sofia shook her head.
“She never stopped loving you.””
That night, Ricardo returned to Elena’s old bedroom.
He found a hidden compartment behind a drawer.
Inside was a final letter.
His hands shook before opening it.
Ricardo,
If you found this, then Victor failed.
He closed his eyes.
Elena knew.
She knew.
I need you to understand something. Clara is your daughter. The doctors confirmed it. Victor changed the records because he wanted you to believe otherwise.
Ricardo stopped.
The truth finally appeared.
The DNA test.
The lies.
Everything.
Victor wanted to erase you from her life.
Ricardo continued reading.
He told me if I didn’t leave with him, he would destroy everything you built.
A tear fell.
I tried to protect Clara. I tried to come back to you.
The next sentence was barely readable.
But Victor found us.
Ricardo’s breathing became heavier.
Dante entered.
“Boss?””
Ricardo handed him the letter.
Dante read silently.
Then looked up.
“He killed her.””
Ricardo didn’t answer.
Because he already knew.
The next morning, Ricardo gathered his entire organization.
Everyone expected a business meeting.
Nobody expected him to say:
“Victor Moretti betrayed me.””
The room went silent.
One man stepped forward.
“Boss, Victor was your brother.””
Ricardo looked at him.
“No.””
His voice was cold.
“He was a thief.””
Then the doors opened.
Everyone turned.
Victor stood there.
Older.
Calmer.
Smiling.
Ricardo immediately reached for his weapon.
Victor raised his hands.
“I came to talk.””
Dante moved forward.
“You’re brave coming here.””
Victor looked at Clara.
“I came for her.””
Ricardo stepped between them.
“You’re not touching my daughter.””
Victor smiled sadly.
“Your daughter?””
He looked at Clara.
“You still haven’t told her the whole truth.””
Clara frowned.
“What truth?””
Victor looked at Ricardo.
“Tell her.””
Nobody moved.
Ricardo’s expression changed.
Because there was one truth he still didn’t understand.
May you like
Victor smiled.
“Tell her how Elena really died.””
