Chapter 3: The Daughter Ricardo Never Knew

Ricardo Vale had spent six years believing he lost everything.

Now he discovered he might have lost something he never knew existed.

A daughter.

The thought was impossible.

And yet Clara’s existence fit into every missing piece.

The necklace.

The photograph.

The warning call.

The fear in someone’s voice.

Someone had buried the truth.

And Ricardo intended to dig it out.

By sunrise, Dante had gathered every record he could find.

Ricardo stood in his office, staring at documents spread across the table.

“Maria Bennett changed her name three months after Elena died,” Dante said.

“Why?””

“No idea.””

Ricardo picked up another paper.

“And Clara?””

“Born nine months after Elena’s death.””

The room went silent.

Ricardo looked up.

“That’s impossible.””

Dante nodded.

“Unless Elena didn’t die when we thought she did.””

Ricardo’s eyes darkened.

He remembered the funeral.

The closed coffin.

The rushed arrangements.

The way Elena’s family refused to let him see her one last time.

At the time, he thought they were grieving.

Now he wondered if they were hiding something.

Clara arrived at the mansion that afternoon carrying Leo’s favorite blanket.

“I thought he might need this.””

Ricardo looked at her.

“You came back?””

She smiled.

“Your son grabbed my finger yesterday. I think we’re friends now.””

For a moment, Ricardo forgot everything.

He watched Clara walk toward Leo.

The baby immediately reached for her.

Dante noticed.

“So did Elena.””

Ricardo looked at him.

“What?””

“Your wife.””

Dante’s voice softened.

“She used to calm every child she met.””

Ricardo watched Clara lift Leo.

The scene felt painfully familiar.

Like watching a ghost.

“Clara,” he said.

She turned.

“Did your mother ever mention Elena Vale?””

The smile disappeared from her face.

“How do you know that name?””

Ricardo froze.

“You recognize it?””

Clara looked nervous.

“My mother told me never to say that name.””

“Why?””

“She said some people would hurt me if they knew who I was.””

Ricardo stepped closer.

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

“Clara.””

His voice became gentler.

“Please.””

She looked at him.

And for the first time, he saw fear in her eyes.

“My mother kept a box hidden.””

“What box?””

“After she died, I found it.””

Ricardo’s heart started racing.

“What was inside?””

“Letters.””

“From who?””

Clara swallowed.

“She never signed them.””

Ricardo’s voice lowered.

“Do you still have them?””

Clara nodded slowly.

“At home.””

“Take me there.””

She hesitated.

“I barely know you.””

Ricardo looked at her.

Most people would have feared him.

But Clara challenged him.

“You’re asking me to trust a man whose bodyguards carry guns.””

Ricardo looked away.

Then quietly said:

“My wife’s necklace is around your neck.””

Clara touched it.

“And you think that means something.””

“I think it means someone spent years keeping us apart.””

At Clara’s apartment, everything was simple.

A small kitchen.

Old furniture.

Books stacked beside the window.

Ricardo looked around and realized something.

She had grown up with almost nothing.

While he had lived in a mansion.

His daughter had struggled alone.

If she truly was his daughter.

He hated himself for even needing proof.

Clara opened a drawer and removed a wooden box.

“This is all I have left from my mother.””

Ricardo carefully opened it.

Inside were letters.

Photos.

And a small hospital bracelet.

He picked it up.

The name on it was faded.

But still readable.

“Baby girl.””

Underneath was one word.

“Vale.””

Ricardo stopped breathing.

Clara looked at him.

“What does that mean?””

Before he could answer, the apartment door suddenly opened.

Dante reached for his weapon.

A man stepped inside.

Older.

Scarred.

Holding a photograph.

“Ricardo Vale.””

Ricardo turned.

“Who are you?””

The stranger looked at Clara.

Then at the necklace.

His eyes filled with regret.

“I’m the man who helped your wife hide her daughter.””

Ricardo moved forward.

“Explain.””

The man shook his head.

“Not here.””

“Why?””

The stranger looked terrified.

“Because the people who wanted Elena dead already know you found Clara.””

Then the lights in the apartment went out.

A crash came from the hallway.

Dante pulled Clara behind him.

Ricardo heard footsteps approaching.

The stranger whispered one final sentence:

“They’re here to finish what they started six years ago.””
