Chapter 4: The Enemy Who Knew Elena’s Secret
The first sound Ricardo heard was glass breaking.
The second was Clara screaming.
The third was his own voice ordering everyone to move.
“Down!””
Dante reacted instantly.
He pushed Clara behind the kitchen counter while Ricardo moved toward the hallway.
The man who had entered the apartment disappeared into the darkness.
Then came another crash.
Someone was inside.
Someone who knew exactly where they were.
Ricardo’s instincts took over.
For years, survival had been his language.
But tonight was different.
Tonight, he wasn’t protecting money.
Or power.
He was protecting his daughter.
If Clara truly was Elena’s child, then he had already lost six years with her.
He refused to lose another second.
“Stay behind me,” Ricardo told Clara.
She stared at him.
“You don’t even know if I’m your daughter.””
Ricardo looked back.
“No.””
His voice softened.
“But I know Elena would want me to protect you.””
The words hit Clara harder than any threat could.
Because she had spent her entire life wondering who her father was.
And now a stranger was looking at her like he was afraid to lose her.
Dante caught the intruder near the back door.
A fight broke out.
Furniture crashed.
The stranger who had brought the photograph grabbed Ricardo’s arm.
“Listen to me!””
Ricardo shoved him against the wall.
“Who sent them?””
The man looked terrified.
“Victor.””
Ricardo froze.
There was only one Victor who mattered.
His former partner.
The man who had helped build his empire.
The man who disappeared after Elena’s death.
“Victor Moretti?””
The stranger nodded.
“He knew about Elena’s baby.””
Ricardo’s face changed.
“He knew?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t he tell me?””
The man looked down.
“Because he wanted your family gone.””
After the attackers escaped, Ricardo sat in silence.
Clara stood across from him.
“Victor knew about me?””
Ricardo nodded.
“He may have known more than I did.””
She looked away.
“So everyone knew except me.””
The pain in her voice cut deeper than any bullet.
Ricardo wanted to say something.
Anything.
But apologies could not replace years.
“I’m sorry.””
Clara laughed bitterly.
“You don’t even know if I’m your daughter.””
Ricardo stepped closer.
“No.””
He looked directly at her.
“But I know I should have been there.””
For the first time, Clara saw something beyond the rumors.
Not the mob boss.
Not the powerful man.
Just a broken father.
The next morning, Ricardo ordered a DNA test.
Clara agreed.
Neither of them slept.
The results would decide everything.
While they waited, Dante continued investigating Elena’s past.
Then he found something.
A hidden message inside the necklace.
The pendant wasn’t just jewelry.
It had a small opening.
Inside was a tiny piece of paper.
Dante brought it to Ricardo.
“Boss.””
Ricardo unfolded it.
Only one sentence was written.
His hands began shaking.
Because he recognized the handwriting.
Elena’s.
Ricardo, if you are reading this, it means they failed to keep my daughter from you.
His heart stopped.
Dante looked at him.
“What does it say?””
Ricardo kept reading.
I’m sorry I lied. I wasn’t protecting myself. I was protecting her.
A tear fell onto the paper.
The first tear Dante had ever seen from him.
Then Ricardo read the final line.
And everything changed.
Our daughter’s name is not Clara Bennett.
Ricardo looked up.
Confusion replaced grief.
Dante stepped closer.
“What?””
Ricardo turned the paper around.
Dante read the final words.
Then his face went pale.
Because Elena had written a name.
A name nobody expected.
A name that explained why someone had spent years hiding Clara.
Ricardo whispered:
“She knew.””
A silence filled the room.
“She knew who Clara’s real enemy was.””
Dante stared at the paper.
“Who?””
Ricardo looked toward the door.
Toward the woman who might be his daughter.
Then he said the name Elena had written.
And both men realized the truth was much darker than they imagined.

Because the person who wanted Clara dead…
Was someone Ricardo had trusted with his own life.
