Chapter 5: What His Mother Left Behind

“Mr. Whitmore?””

Ethan stared at the man approaching him.

Daniel Whitmore had been his mother's attorney for nearly twenty years. He had handled property purchases, inheritance arrangements, and the complicated legal affairs of the Cole family.

Ethan hadn't seen him since the funeral.

“Why are you here?”” Ethan asked.

Daniel placed his leather case on the table.

“Because your mother asked me to protect something until you were ready to receive it.””

Victoria immediately shook her head.

“This is absurd. Whatever Eleanor told you, it has no bearing on tonight.””

Daniel turned toward her.

“Mrs. Reynolds, I believe you are the last person who should be deciding what has bearing on tonight.””

Chad moved closer.

“Watch your accusations.””

Daniel opened his case.

“I've spent fourteen months watching people make accusations against an injured man who couldn't defend himself. Tonight, I intend to correct the record.””

He removed a thick, yellowed envelope.

On its front was handwritten:

*For Ethan. When the truth can no longer be hidden.*

Ethan recognized his mother's handwriting.

His throat tightened.

He reached for the envelope but stopped.

“Why didn't you give me this earlier?””

Daniel's expression softened.

“Because your mother instructed me not to release it until two conditions were satisfied.””

“What conditions?””

“First, that you had recovered sufficiently to make independent decisions. Second, that the people who attempted to take control of your estate had been identified.””

Ethan looked toward Brooke.

Then Chad.

Then Victoria.

“Were you waiting for them?””

Daniel nodded.

“Unfortunately, yes.””

Victoria laughed bitterly.

“This is theater. Eleanor was an emotional woman. She made promises she couldn't keep.””

Daniel removed another document.

“Mrs. Reynolds, you should be careful. Your name appears in several of the correspondence records.””

Her smile disappeared.

Daniel continued.

“Three days before the accident, you visited Eleanor Cole's residence. You told her you represented an investment group interested in acquiring several of her properties.””

Victoria folded her arms.

“I met many people in business.””

“Indeed. But Eleanor refused your offer.””

“Then she made a bad business decision.””

Daniel shook his head.

“She refused because she discovered that your proposed acquisition agreement contained a clause transferring control of her properties to an offshore holding company.””

Chad interrupted.

“That doesn't prove anything.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Your signature appears on the original proposal.””

Chad's jaw tightened.

Ethan looked between them.

“Wait. My mother knew about this before the accident?””

“She did,” Daniel answered.

“Then why didn't she tell me?””

Daniel glanced at the envelope.

“She intended to. But she wanted to confront you with something first.””

Ethan's fingers trembled as he opened it.

Inside was a handwritten letter and a small photograph.

The photograph showed Eleanor Cole standing beside a younger Victoria Reynolds.

They were smiling.

They looked like old friends.

Ethan frowned.

“I didn't know they knew each other.””

Daniel nodded.

“They had known each other for years.””

Victoria looked away.

Ethan unfolded the letter.

His mother's words appeared in elegant blue ink.

My dearest Ethan,

If you're reading this, then something has happened that I hoped would never happen.

I know you've always believed your father built our family's fortune alone. The truth is more complicated.

Ethan stopped reading.

His mother had rarely spoken about his father, who had died when Ethan was young.

He continued.

Before your father died, he entered into a business arrangement with several families, including the Reynolds family. Your father believed those arrangements would create opportunities for everyone involved.

But he discovered that someone was secretly moving assets away from the original partners.

Ethan looked up.

“Who was it?””

Daniel spoke quietly.

“Your mother suspected Victoria.””

Victoria scoffed.

“Eleanor was paranoid.””

Daniel ignored her.

“She discovered irregularities in the partnership accounts. She intended to expose them, but the evidence disappeared shortly before her death.””

Ethan's chest tightened.

“My mother died of a heart attack.””

“Yes,” Daniel replied.

“That is what the official medical report stated.””

“Are you suggesting—”

“I'm suggesting we shouldn't make assumptions. Your mother left behind questions that were never properly investigated.””

Victoria slammed her hand against the table.

“This is disgusting!””

Chad grabbed her shoulder.

“Mom, calm down.””

But Ethan had already noticed something else.

The photograph.

He turned it over.

There was a date written on the back.

Three days before his accident.

Underneath it, his mother had written:

Victoria knows where the original agreement is.

Ethan looked at the older woman.

“Where is it?””

Victoria's face became unreadable.

“I have no idea what you're talking about.””

Daniel removed another sheet from his case.

“Then perhaps you can explain this.””

It was a property inventory.

One item was circled in red.

A locked storage room at the Cole estate.

Ethan frowned.

“What is this?””

Daniel answered.

“Your mother maintained a private archive beneath the east wing of the house. She stored original contracts, correspondence, and financial records there.””

“Why wasn't I told?””

“Because the archive was sealed after her death.””

Ethan looked at Victoria.

“Did you go there?””

She said nothing.

Daniel turned another page.

“The estate's security records show that someone entered the property two days after Ethan's accident.””

Chad laughed.

“Anyone could have entered.””

“Not without the access code.””

Daniel placed a photograph on the table.

It showed Victoria standing beside the estate's rear entrance.

The date was clearly visible.

Chad stopped smiling.

Victoria's voice became sharp.

“That photograph proves nothing.””

Daniel nodded.

“Perhaps not. But the missing archive inventory, the altered property records, and your presence at the estate create an interesting picture.””

Ethan felt something cold settle in his stomach.

“Was the archive emptied?””

“Not entirely,” Daniel said.

“Several items were removed. However, one original document remained.””

“What document?””

Daniel looked at the cream envelope Ethan had been holding.

“The document you were given tonight.””

Ethan slowly turned toward him.

“What?””

Daniel nodded.

“Your mother prepared a legal instrument shortly before her death. It contains the original ownership structure of the Cole family's principal assets.””

Victoria's expression changed dramatically.

For the first time, she looked afraid.

Chad noticed.

“Mom?””

She whispered, “That's impossible.””

Ethan stared at her.

“You know what's inside.””

Victoria shook her head.

“No.””

But her voice was weak.

Daniel continued.

“Your mother wanted the original document kept separate from the ordinary estate records. She believed someone might attempt to alter or destroy it.””

Ethan looked down at the cream envelope.

He still hadn't opened it.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because your mother requested that you receive it only after the original ownership records were secured.””

Ethan took a breath.

Then another.

“Are they secured?””

Daniel nodded.

“They are.””

Before Ethan could respond, Chad stepped forward.

“Give me that document.””

Ethan looked at him.

“Excuse me?””

“You heard me.””

“Why do you want it?””

“Because whatever is in there concerns my family's business.””

Ethan almost smiled.

“Your family's business?””

Chad reached for the envelope.

Martin immediately stepped between them.

“Mr. Reynolds, I strongly advise you not to touch anything.””

Chad shoved Martin.

Two security officers moved forward.

“Get your hands off me!”” Chad shouted.

The ballroom erupted in whispers.

Brooke began crying again.

“Chad, stop!””

He turned toward her.

“Stay out of this!””

Ethan watched the exchange.

Then he said something that made Brooke look at him.

“Do you know what I find most interesting?””

She shook her head.

“You left me because you believed I had lost my future. But even after I lost everything, I never tried to steal someone else's.””

Brooke lowered her head.

Ethan turned toward Daniel.

“What's the next step?””

Daniel closed his briefcase.

“The document needs to be formally presented to the estate's independent administrator.””

“Can that happen tonight?””

“Yes.””

Victoria suddenly laughed.

A strange, desperate laugh.

“You still don't understand, Ethan.””

He looked at her.

“Understand what?””

She leaned toward him.

“Your mother wasn't the only one who signed that original agreement.””

Ethan went still.

“What are you talking about?””

Victoria smiled faintly.

“Your father signed it too.””

Daniel's expression changed.

“That is impossible.””

Victoria reached into her handbag and removed a small photograph.

She placed it beside the other documents.

It showed Ethan's father sitting at a desk, signing a contract.

Beside him stood a younger Victoria.

And behind them, partially visible in the doorway, was another man.

Ethan stared at the face.

He recognized him immediately.

His own uncle.

May you like

Robert Cole.

The man who had supposedly died twelve years earlier.
