Chapter 2: The Impossible Stand

At first, nobody understood what they were seeing.

Ethan's right hand gripped the wheelchair armrest.

His left hand pressed against the other side.

His shoulders tightened.

Then, slowly, he lifted himself.

His knees trembled beneath his black trousers.

His shoes touched the polished marble.

One second.

Two seconds.

He was standing.

The glass in Grace's hand slipped slightly.

Brooke's smile vanished.

Chad stopped laughing.

“Ethan?”” Brooke whispered.

Ethan straightened his jacket.

“Good evening, Brooke.””

Her face drained of color.

“You... you can walk?””

He took one measured step forward.

“Yes.””

Brooke stumbled backward.

“But the accident...””

“The accident happened.””

“You told everyone you couldn't walk!””

Ethan looked at her.

“I told you the doctors weren't sure whether I'd recover. You decided the answer before they did.””

Chad stepped between them.

“What's going on here?””

Ethan glanced at him.

“Something you should have investigated before getting engaged.””

Chad's face reddened.

“Listen, buddy. I don't know what kind of performance you're putting on, but you need to sit down.””

Ethan gave a humorless smile.

“I spent fourteen months learning how to stand again. I don't intend to sit down because you asked.””

A murmur spread through the ballroom.

Guests began lifting their phones.

Brooke shook her head.

“No. This isn't possible.””

Ethan turned toward her.

“You abandoned me when I needed you.””

Her lips parted, but no words came.

“You took my ring. You emptied our joint account. You told the hospital you wanted nothing more to do with me.””

Brooke glanced around at the watching guests.

“That's not how it happened.””

“Really?””

“I was scared!””

“You were scared of what?””

Brooke swallowed.

“Of having my entire life destroyed.””

Ethan nodded slowly.

“So you decided to destroy mine first.””

Chad grabbed Brooke's arm.

“Stop explaining yourself. You don't owe him anything.””

Ethan looked at Chad's hand.

“Let go of her.””

Chad released her with an irritated shrug.

“Don't tell me what to do.””

The chairman stepped down from the stage.

“Mr. Cole, we're ready.””

Ethan nodded.

“Thank you, Martin.””

The name made several guests turn.

Martin Hayes was the chairman of the company Brooke and Chad had spent the last six months trying to impress.

Chad immediately straightened.

“Mr. Hayes! Perfect timing. I was just about to introduce myself properly.””

Martin didn't look at him.

Instead, he approached Ethan.

“It's good to see you standing, sir.””

“It's good to be here, Martin.””

Brooke stared between them.

“Why is he calling you sir?””

Ethan didn't answer.

Martin motioned toward an attendant waiting beside the ballroom doors.

The attendant carried a large cream-colored document envelope.

He approached Ethan and held it out with both hands.

Ethan accepted it.

The thick paper caught the golden light.

A small embossed seal sat in the center.

Brooke stared at the envelope.

“What is that?””

Ethan ran his thumb across the seal.

“Something I've been waiting a long time to discuss.””

Chad laughed uneasily.

“Come on. Whatever this is, it doesn't concern us.””

Ethan looked at him.

“Actually, Chad, it concerns you more than you realize.””

Chad's smile faded.

Martin stepped toward the microphone.

“Ladies and gentlemen, before we continue with tonight's program, I believe we should clarify one important matter.””

Brooke suddenly grabbed Ethan's sleeve.

“Wait. Ethan, can we talk privately?””

He gently removed her hand.

“You had fourteen months to talk to me privately.””

“I didn't know you would recover!””

“You didn't know I'd recover,” he repeated.

“Or you didn't care enough to find out?””

Brooke's eyes filled with tears.

“Please. Not here.””

Ethan looked around the ballroom.

“Why not here? You had no problem humiliating me here.””

Grace stood near the service station, watching with wide eyes.

She had never seen anything like this.

The same man Brooke had mocked minutes earlier was now standing in the middle of the room, surrounded by people who seemed to know exactly who he was.

Chad turned toward Martin.

“Mr. Hayes, perhaps we should discuss this another time. Brooke and I have a business proposal pending with Reynolds Development.””

Martin finally looked at him.

“I'm aware.””

“Excellent. Then perhaps you can help clear up this misunderstanding.””

Martin's expression hardened.

“What misunderstanding?””

Chad gestured toward Ethan.

“This man is making accusations about my fiancée. He's clearly upset, and I don't want tonight's event disrupted.””

Martin looked at Ethan.

“Would you like me to explain?””

“Not yet.””

Ethan turned back toward Brooke.

“Tell me something. When you left the hospital, did you ever wonder how I paid for my rehabilitation?””

Brooke frowned.

“What?””

“Did you ever wonder why the hospital stopped sending me bills?””

She said nothing.

“Did you ever wonder why my mother's estate was transferred into a different legal structure?””

Chad's eyes narrowed.

“What are you talking about?””

Ethan held up the cream envelope.

“That's what we're here to discuss.””

Brooke reached for it.

“Give me that.””

Ethan moved it out of reach.

“Don't touch it.””

Her expression changed.

For the first time that evening, she looked genuinely frightened.

Martin returned to the microphone.

“Before Mr. Cole speaks, I would like everyone to understand that this gathering was originally organized to announce a major corporate partnership.””

Chad nodded quickly.

“Exactly. That's why we're here.””

Martin paused.

“Unfortunately, that partnership is no longer proceeding as planned.””

Chad's face tightened.

“What do you mean?””

Martin looked directly at him.

“Your company submitted documents that are currently under investigation.””

A wave of whispers rolled through the room.

Brooke grabbed Chad's wrist.

“What documents?””

Chad didn't answer.

Ethan watched him carefully.

Then Martin added something that made Brooke's knees almost buckle.

“And the person who requested tonight's meeting is the rightful owner of the assets your company has been attempting to acquire.””

Chad slowly turned toward Ethan.

“Who?””

Martin stepped aside.

Ethan took the microphone.

“Me.””

Nobody moved.

Ethan opened his mouth to continue.

But before he could speak, a woman near the back of the ballroom screamed.

“That's impossible! He signed the transfer papers himself!””

Ethan turned toward the voice.

An older woman in an emerald-green dress stood beside the entrance.

He recognized her immediately.

It was Victoria Reynolds.

May you like

Chad's mother.

And she was holding a photograph of Ethan signing a document fourteen months earlier.
