Chapter 10: The Woman Who Came Back From the Dead

“Your mother.””

Grace's words echoed through Ethan's phone.

For several seconds, he couldn't breathe.

“Grace, listen to me carefully. What did you just say?””

“I said your mother is here.””

Ethan looked at Daniel.

The older attorney had gone completely pale.

“That isn't possible,” Daniel whispered.

Ethan gripped the phone.

“Where is she?””

“Inside the ballroom. She's asking for you.””

“Don't let her leave.””

“I won't.””

Ethan ended the call.

Victoria Reynolds was still struggling against the security officers. Robert stood motionless, staring at the cream document in Ethan's hands.

Neither appeared surprised.

That frightened Ethan more than anything.

He turned toward his uncle.

“You knew.””

Robert said nothing.

“You knew my mother was alive?””

Robert lowered his eyes.

“Ethan, there's something you need to understand.””

“Don't.””

“Your mother made her own decision.””

Ethan grabbed his jacket.

“I'm going to hear it from her.””

Daniel followed him.

Martin instructed the security team to keep Victoria and Robert separated and contact the authorities.

Within minutes, Ethan was back in the car.

The drive to the hotel felt endless.

His thoughts raced.

His mother had been dead for years.

He had stood beside her coffin. He had watched people lower flowers onto the grave. He had spent nights crying in the house where every photograph reminded him of her.

And now Grace was telling him she was alive.

When the car stopped outside the hotel, Ethan didn't wait for the driver.

He hurried through the entrance.

The ballroom was nearly empty.

The guests had mostly departed, but a few employees remained, quietly clearing tables.

Grace stood near the stage.

Beside her was an older woman wearing a simple cream coat.

Her silver hair was tied behind her head.

She was thinner than Ethan remembered.

There were deeper lines around her eyes.

But there was no mistaking her.

“Mom?””

The woman turned.

Her lips trembled.

“Ethan.””

He stopped several feet away.

For a moment, neither moved.

Then Eleanor Cole took one hesitant step toward him.

“My boy.””

Ethan shook his head.

“No.””

Her eyes filled.

“Ethan, please.””

“You're dead.””

“I know what you were told.””

“I buried you!””

Eleanor covered her mouth.

“I know.””

“You let me stand at your funeral!””

Her shoulders began to shake.

“I had no choice.””

Ethan laughed bitterly.

“No choice? You had a choice every time I visited your grave. You had a choice every time I called your old number. You had a choice when I was lying in that hospital bed, wondering why everyone I loved had abandoned me.””

Eleanor reached for him.

He stepped backward.

“Don't touch me.””

She lowered her hand.

Grace quietly moved away, giving them space.

Eleanor looked at her son.

“I wanted to come back.””

“Then why didn't you?””

“Because the people who tried to take our family apart were still watching you.””

Ethan stared at her.

“Victoria?””

“Yes.””

“Robert?””

Eleanor closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

“And Nathan?””

Her expression changed.

“Nathan was supposed to help protect you. I didn't know he'd become involved with them.””

Ethan looked toward the empty tables.

“So you let me believe you were dead while they destroyed my life?””

Eleanor's voice broke.

“I believed it was the only way to keep you alive.””

He looked at her.

“Who arranged the funeral?””

“Robert.””

“Who identified the body?””

Eleanor hesitated.

“A woman who had died under a different identity. Robert arranged everything.””

Ethan felt sick.

“And you watched?””

“I was hiding.””

“Where?””

“Overseas. In a small town where nobody knew my name.””

Ethan shook his head.

“Do you know what happened to me after you disappeared?””

Eleanor nodded.

“I received reports.””

“Reports?””

“Yes.””

“Did you know I was in a wheelchair?””

“Yes.””

“Did you know Brooke left me?””

Eleanor began crying.

“Yes.””

“Did you know I spent fourteen months trying to learn how to walk again?””

“Yes, Ethan.””

“Then why didn't you come?””

She looked down.

“Because the first time I tried, someone followed me to the rehabilitation center. I had to leave before they discovered where I was staying.””

Ethan stared at her.

“Who followed you?””

Eleanor looked toward the ballroom entrance.

“Robert.””

A long silence followed.

Then Ethan asked the question that had been burning inside him.

“Did Victoria kill you?””

Eleanor took a slow breath.

“She tried.””

Ethan's face tightened.

“Tell me everything.””

Eleanor sat down at the nearest table.

Grace brought her a glass of water.

“Thank you, sweetheart,” Eleanor said.

Grace smiled faintly.

“Of course, ma'am.””

Eleanor looked at Ethan.

“Four years ago, I discovered that Victoria and Robert were moving money through the original partnership accounts. They had created false companies, transferred properties, and concealed the profits.””

“Why didn't you report them?””

“I tried. But the evidence disappeared, and two people who agreed to testify suddenly withdrew their statements.””

“Who?””

“Your father's former accountant and the estate's financial administrator.””

Ethan remembered the name on the old security records.

“Nathan?””

Eleanor nodded.

“He was involved too, although I believe he was manipulated by Robert.””

Ethan pulled out a chair.

“And the night you supposedly died?””

Eleanor looked down at her hands.

“Victoria visited me at the estate. She brought medicine, claiming it had been prescribed by my doctor. I became violently ill shortly afterward.””

“Did she poison you?””

“I believe so. I managed to reach the emergency line before losing consciousness. When I woke up, I was in a private medical facility.””

Ethan leaned forward.

“Who saved you?””

“Dr. Melissa Grant.””

Ethan closed his eyes.

Melissa had known.

She had been the person who kept his mother alive.

“She helped you disappear?””

“Yes. She told the authorities I had died because she believed Robert had people inside the investigation. She arranged for me to be transferred under another identity.””

Ethan looked toward Grace.

“And the trust?””

Eleanor's expression softened.

“That is why Grace's name appeared in the document.””

Ethan turned.

Grace stood several feet away, listening.

“What does she have to do with our family?””

Eleanor looked at the young server.

“Grace is my granddaughter.””

The room fell silent.

Grace's eyes filled with tears.

Ethan looked between them.

“Your granddaughter?””

Eleanor nodded.

“Your father's daughter from a relationship before he met me. Her mother died when Grace was very young.””

Grace lowered her eyes.

“I didn't know how to tell you.””

Ethan stared at her.

“You knew who I was?””

“Not at first,” Grace replied.

“I recognized your family name when I saw the invitation list for the event. Then I saw your photograph.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

Grace swallowed.

“Because I wasn't sure you would believe me. And because your grandmother asked me to wait until the right moment.””

Ethan turned toward Eleanor.

“You knew she was working here?””

“Yes.””

“And you let her serve me while Brooke humiliated me?””

Eleanor shook her head.

“I didn't arrange that. Grace insisted on working at the hotel because she wanted to see you for herself.””

Grace stepped closer.

“I heard people talking about you. They said you were ruined. They said you had no family left.””

Her voice trembled.

“I wanted to know whether you were really the man they described.””

Ethan looked at her.

“And what did you discover?””

Grace smiled sadly.

“That you were still kind enough to thank a waitress when everyone else was laughing at you.””

Ethan looked away.

For the first time that night, he felt his anger begin to soften.

But there was still one question.

“The trust.””

Eleanor nodded.

“Your father created it to protect the family assets. When I discovered the fraud, I arranged for the controlling interest to pass to the next generation.””

“Grace?””

“Yes. I named her as an independent beneficiary, not because I wanted to replace you, but because I wanted someone outside the existing partnership to have the power to prevent another theft.””

Ethan frowned.

“Why not me?””

“Because you were already the target. If they knew you controlled everything, they would never have stopped pursuing you.””

Daniel finally spoke.

“Mrs. Cole, the document also contains a clause allowing Ethan to assume full control once the original beneficiaries are identified and the fraud is formally established.””

Eleanor nodded.

“Exactly.””

Ethan looked down at the cream document.

“So Grace was never meant to take my inheritance.””

“No,” Eleanor replied.

“She was meant to protect it until you could.””

Grace approached the table.

“I don't want your money, Ethan. I don't want your company. I only wanted to meet my family.””

Ethan studied her face.

Then he offered his hand.

“Then let's start there.””

Grace took it.

For the first time that evening, she smiled without fear.

But the reunion was far from over.

Martin entered the ballroom with two officers.

“Ethan, we've secured Victoria and Robert.””

Eleanor stiffened.

“Did you find Nathan?””

Martin shook his head.

“No. But there's something else.””

He handed Ethan a tablet.

A video was playing.

It showed Nathan entering the hotel through a side entrance twenty minutes earlier.

He walked directly toward the ballroom.

Then he stopped in front of the stage and placed a small package beneath the microphone.

Ethan frowned.

“What is that?””

Martin enlarged the image.

A small black recording device.

Eleanor's face went pale.

“That's not possible.””

Ethan turned toward her.

“What?””

She pointed at the screen.

“That's the device Robert used when he threatened me years ago.””

Ethan looked at Martin.

“Where is it now?””

“Security recovered it.””

“Play it.””

Martin hesitated.

“Ethan, you should hear this somewhere private.””

“Play it.””

Martin pressed the screen.

A familiar voice emerged.

Nathan Brooks.

“If you're hearing this, Ethan, then you've finally discovered the truth. But there's one thing your mother hasn't told you.””

Eleanor gripped the table.

Nathan continued.

“Robert and Victoria weren't the only people involved. The original partnership had a fifth participant.””

Ethan stared at the screen.

“A fifth?””

The recording continued.

“And that person has been protecting you from the beginning.””

A pause.

Then Nathan spoke the name.

“Martin Hayes.””

Ethan slowly turned.

Martin stood near the ballroom entrance.

His expression had changed.

He wasn't smiling anymore.

Eleanor whispered something Ethan would never forget.

“Martin was your father's closest friend.””

Ethan looked at the man who had helped him expose the fraud.

The man who had arranged the meeting.

The man who had stood beside him when he rose from the wheelchair.

“Martin?””

The chairman looked at him.

Then he sighed.

“I'm sorry, Ethan.””

May you like

And before anyone could react, he placed a second cream envelope on the table.

“This one contains the agreement your father never wanted you to see.””
