Chapter 3: The Signature That Changed Everything
Victoria Reynolds walked into the center of the ballroom as if she owned the building.
Her emerald dress shimmered beneath the chandeliers. A large diamond ring flashed on her right hand.
She held the photograph tightly.
“I have proof,” she announced.
Chad rushed toward her.
“Mom, what are you doing?””
Victoria ignored him.
She approached Martin and placed the photograph on the nearest table.
“Look at this. Ethan Cole signed the transfer agreement. His company was legally handed over. Whatever fantasy he's telling everyone tonight doesn't change that.””
Ethan studied the photograph.
It showed him sitting in a hospital bed, his right hand holding a pen above a document.
His face was pale.
His left arm was wrapped in a medical bandage.
He remembered that day.
Not clearly.
He remembered waking up after a heavy dose of medication.
He remembered a man saying the paperwork was necessary.
And he remembered Brooke standing near the window.
“Where did you get that photograph?”” Ethan asked.
Victoria smiled.
“From a perfectly legitimate business transaction.””
Ethan looked at Martin.
“Did you know about this?””
Martin nodded.
“I've seen the photograph. I've also seen the original paperwork.””
Victoria folded her arms.
“Then perhaps you should stop encouraging this ridiculous performance.””
Ethan remained calm.
“Mrs. Reynolds, do you remember what happened to my company after that photograph was taken?””
Victoria lifted her chin.
“Your business was transferred. Chad's firm took over the remaining operations.””
“Did it?””
“Of course.””
Ethan looked at Chad.
“Interesting. Because I remember something very different.””
Chad stepped forward.
“You were in no condition to run a business. Someone had to keep it alive.””
“Someone?””
“Your employees needed salaries. Your investors needed stability. My father and I stepped in.””
Ethan nodded.
“And the profits?””
Chad shrugged.
“Business expenses.””
“The properties?””
“Company assets.””
“The money transferred from my mother's trust?””
Chad's expression stiffened.
“That's a separate matter.””
Ethan took one step toward him.
“Is it?””
Brooke moved between them.
“Ethan, please. You're making this worse.””
He looked at her.
“For whom?””
She glanced at Victoria, then at Chad.
“Everyone.””
A bitter laugh escaped Ethan.
“That's interesting. When I was lying in that hospital bed, nobody worried about making things worse for me.””
Grace stood behind a serving table, holding a tray of untouched glasses.
She had been instructed to remain out of the way, but she couldn't stop listening.
The older gentleman who had brought the cream envelope approached Ethan.
“Sir, the original records are ready.””
Ethan nodded.
“Bring them.””
Victoria laughed.
“More papers? You think a fancy envelope will change a signed agreement?””
“No,” Ethan replied.
“The truth will.””
The attendant placed a leather folder beside the cream document.
Ethan opened it.
Inside were several photographs, bank statements, and a collection of legal correspondence.
He didn't reveal the main document.
Instead, he removed a small photograph.
It showed a young woman standing beside his hospital bed.
Brooke recognized her immediately.
Her face went pale.
“Why do you have that?””
Ethan held it up.
“Do you remember this woman?””
Brooke stared at the photograph.
“That's Dr. Melissa Grant.””
“Correct.””
Victoria scoffed.
“What does a doctor have to do with a corporate agreement?””
Ethan looked at her.
“More than you think.””
He turned toward the guests.
“Fourteen months ago, I was recovering from a serious accident. I had multiple injuries, and the medication I was receiving affected my ability to concentrate.””
Chad crossed his arms.
“You were conscious.””
“I was.””
“So you knew what you were signing.””
Ethan shook his head.
“Being conscious and understanding a complicated financial agreement are not the same thing.””
Victoria snapped her fingers impatiently.
“Enough. The man signed it. End of discussion.””
Ethan removed another sheet from the folder.
“This is the medical assessment completed on the afternoon of the signing.””
Victoria reached for it.
Ethan held it back.
“It's not addressed to you.””
He handed it to Martin.
Martin read the first paragraph.
His eyebrows drew together.
Then he looked at Chad.
“Is this true?””
Chad's voice rose.
“What's true?””
Martin placed the paper on the table.
“The assessment states that Mr. Cole was under medication that impaired his ability to understand complex financial decisions.””
Victoria's smile disappeared.
“That doesn't prove anything.””
Ethan nodded.
“Correct. Not by itself.””
He took another document from the folder.
“This is the hospital's visitor record.””
Brooke stared at it.
Her name appeared several times.
“So?”” she asked defensively.
“On the afternoon I signed the papers, you were there.””
“I was your fiancée!””
“You were.””
His voice softened.
“That's why I trusted you.””
For the first time, Brooke looked away.
Ethan continued.
“You told me the documents were temporary. You said they were needed to protect the company while I recovered.””
Chad interrupted.
“He's twisting everything.””
Ethan turned to him.
“Then explain why the document you submitted to the company registry contains a signature dated two days before the hospital records show I was even capable of holding a pen.””
Chad froze.
Victoria immediately stepped forward.
“That's a clerical issue.””
“Then explain why the signature on the original document differs from the signature in my personal records.””
Victoria said nothing.
Ethan placed two copies side by side.
One signature was shaky and incomplete.
The other was smooth, confident, and almost perfectly reproduced.
Martin examined them.
“Chad, who prepared this agreement?””
Chad adjusted his tie.
“I don't remember.””
“You don't remember?””
“It was handled by our legal department.””
Ethan nodded.
“That's what I thought you'd say.””
Brooke suddenly began crying.
“Ethan, I never wanted this to happen.””
He stared at her.
“Then why did you help them?””
“I didn't understand everything!””
“You understood enough to leave me.””
Brooke covered her mouth.
“I was young. I was scared. Chad told me you would never recover.””
Ethan's expression hardened.
“And my mother's necklace?””
Brooke looked down at the diamond resting against her chest.
“I...””
“Did Chad buy it?””
She shook her head.
“Victoria gave it to me.””
Victoria snapped.
“It was a gift!””
Ethan looked at her.
“My mother's will specifically listed that necklace. It was supposed to remain in the family.””
Victoria raised her voice.
“Your mother is dead. You have no idea what she intended.””
Ethan slowly closed the leather folder.
“Actually, Mrs. Reynolds, I do.””
The ballroom fell silent.
He glanced toward Martin.
“Please bring in the next witness.””
Martin nodded toward the entrance.
A side door opened.
A woman in a dark blue suit entered, carrying a slim black briefcase.
She was in her late forties, with silver-streaked hair and a calm, serious expression.
Brooke recognized her before anyone introduced her.
“Melissa?””
The woman stopped beside Ethan.
“Hello, Brooke.””
Chad's face went rigid.
Victoria looked between them.
“Who is this?””
Ethan answered.
“Dr. Melissa Grant. She was my attending physician after the accident.””
Melissa placed her briefcase on the table.
“Good evening, everyone.””
Victoria gave a dismissive laugh.
“Are you here to tell us he was too sick to sign a document?””
Melissa opened her briefcase.
“I'm here because I was asked to preserve the original medical records, and because someone contacted me six months ago with a very unusual question.””
Ethan turned toward her.
“What question?””
Melissa looked directly at Brooke.
“She wanted to know whether the hospital could legally confirm that Ethan had been fully conscious on the afternoon he signed the transfer agreement.””
Brooke's lips parted.
Chad grabbed her arm.
“Don't say another word.””
Melissa continued.
“But that wasn't the most interesting part.””
She removed a small recording device from her briefcase.
Ethan looked at her.
“Is that the original?””
“Yes.””
“Are you certain?””
“Completely.””
Victoria suddenly stepped forward.
“Turn that thing off.””
Melissa didn't move.
“Mrs. Reynolds, I think everyone should hear what was recorded in that hospital room.””
Chad's face had gone white.
Brooke backed away from the table.
Ethan looked down at the cream-colored envelope.
For fourteen months, he had wondered whether Brooke had simply abandoned him for a richer man.
Now he was about to discover whether she had been part of something far more deliberate.
Melissa pressed the play button.
A woman's voice emerged from the recording.

And the first words made Brooke collapse into the nearest chair.
“Once Ethan signs, we can finally take everything from him...””
