Chapter 1: The Man in the Wheelchair
“You lost everything, Ethan. Even me!””
Brooke’s voice sliced through the ballroom, loud enough to silence the conversations at three nearby tables.
Ethan Cole sat motionless in his wheelchair beneath the golden chandeliers. Around him, hundreds of guests dressed in expensive suits and sparkling gowns watched with uncomfortable curiosity.
Brooke adjusted the diamond bracelet on her wrist, then reached forward and tugged his lapel as if he were an unwanted decoration.
Behind her, Chad Reynolds burst into laughter.
“Come on, Brooke,” Chad said, raising his champagne glass.
“Don't be so hard on the guy. He's already having a rough enough life.””
A few guests laughed nervously.
Ethan lowered his eyes.
Not because he was ashamed.
Because he was counting.
Three security guards near the entrance. Two men beside the stage. One private investigator near the bar.
Everything was exactly where it needed to be.
Brooke mistook his silence for surrender.
“Do you remember when you promised me the world?”” she asked, leaning closer.
“You told me we'd build something incredible together. You told me I'd never have to worry about money.””
She glanced at his wheelchair.
“Well, look at you now.””
Chad slipped an arm around her waist.
“Baby, don't waste your time. Some people are born to lead. Others are born to be carried.””
This time, the laughter was louder.
Ethan's fingers tightened around the armrests.
For a moment, the ballroom disappeared.
He remembered a different night.
Rain striking the windows of a private hospital room. The smell of antiseptic. The steady rhythm of a heart monitor.
And Brooke standing beside his bed, holding his engagement ring.
“Ethan, I can't do this anymore,” she had whispered.
His legs had been wrapped in surgical bandages. His body had been bruised from the accident that nearly killed him.
He had reached for her hand.
“Brooke, please. The doctors say there's a chance I'll walk again.””
She had pulled away.
“I didn't sign up to become a nurse.””
Three days later, she disappeared.
She took the engagement ring, emptied their shared savings account, and left him with medical bills he couldn't understand.
At the time, Ethan had believed losing Brooke was the worst thing that could happen to him.
He had been wrong.
Because someone had stolen far more than his money.
“Sir?””
A gentle voice brought him back to the ballroom.
A young server stood beside him, holding a white napkin.
Her name tag read GRACE.
A few drops of red wine had spilled across Ethan's shirt when Chad deliberately knocked his glass against the wheelchair.
Grace had noticed.
“I'm so sorry,” she said softly, kneeling beside him.
“Let me clean that before it stains.””
“It's fine,” Ethan replied.
Grace dabbed carefully at his shirt.
Then she looked up at him.
Unlike the other guests, she wasn't staring at his legs.
She was looking at his face.
“Sir, you don't deserve this.””
Ethan studied her for a moment.
“What makes you say that?””
Grace glanced toward Brooke and Chad.
“Because being in a wheelchair doesn't give anyone permission to treat you like you're less of a person.””
Her voice trembled slightly.
“I know people like them. They think expensive clothes and expensive jewelry make them better than everyone else.””
Ethan almost smiled.
“What's your name?””
“Grace.””
“Thank you, Grace.””
Brooke rolled her eyes.
“Oh, how touching. The waitress has found herself a charity project.””
Grace stood up.
“Ma'am, I was only trying to help.””
“Then go back to carrying drinks,” Brooke snapped.
“Leave the personal conversations to people who matter.””
Chad chuckled.
“Brooke, sweetheart, don't fight with the staff. They'll probably spit in your food.””
Grace lowered her eyes, but she didn't move immediately.
Ethan noticed.
So did Brooke.
“Did you hear me?”” Brooke demanded.
“Get away from him.””
Grace looked at Ethan.
“Would you like me to bring you some water?””
“Yes, please.””
“Of course, sir.””
She walked away.
Brooke shook her head.
“Honestly, Ethan, this is embarrassing. Sitting here while strangers feel sorry for you.””
Ethan finally looked directly at her.
“Is that what you think this is?””
“What else could it be?””
He glanced at Chad.
“Tell me something, Brooke. Does he know?””
Her smile disappeared for half a second.
“Know what?””
“Nothing. Forget it.””
Chad stepped forward.
“Watch your mouth, man.””
Ethan remained calm.
“I'm having a conversation with my former fiancée.””
Chad leaned closer.
“She's my fiancée now. And you should be grateful she's even speaking to you.””
Brooke touched Chad's chest.
“Leave him, darling. He's desperate for attention.””
Then she bent toward Ethan and whispered something only he could hear.
“I hope you enjoyed the life you had when you were rich. That life is over.””
Ethan looked at the diamond necklace around her neck.
He recognized it.
It had belonged to his mother.
The necklace had disappeared from his family estate shortly after the accident.
His expression changed.
“Where did you get that necklace?””
Brooke instinctively touched it.
“This?””
“Yes.””
“Chad bought it for me.””
Chad smiled proudly.
“Cost me a fortune. Worth every penny.””
Ethan's jaw tightened.
“That necklace belonged to my mother.””
Brooke laughed.
“Your mother is gone, Ethan. And you don't own anything anymore.””
He looked at her for several seconds.
Then he said quietly, “You should be careful about what you claim to own.””
Chad raised his glass.
“Enough of this. Come on, Brooke. The chairman is about to make his announcement.””
The two turned toward the stage.
At the far end of the ballroom, a silver-haired man in a black suit stepped away from the main entrance.
He caught Ethan's eye.
One small nod.
Ethan returned it.
The moment had arrived.
A few minutes later, Grace returned with a glass of water.
She placed it carefully on the table.
“Here you go, sir.””
“Grace.””
“Yes?””
“Could you stand over there for a moment?””
She frowned.
“Is something wrong?””
“No. I just don't want you getting caught in the middle of what happens next.””
Before she could ask another question, the ballroom lights dimmed.
The chairman approached the microphone.
“Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for joining us tonight. We have gathered to celebrate the future of Reynolds Development Group.””
Chad straightened his jacket.
Brooke smiled and adjusted her necklace.
Ethan placed both hands firmly on the armrests.
The chairman continued.
“But before we begin, there is someone I would like to welcome back.””
His eyes moved toward Ethan.
“Someone many of you have been told would never return.””
The entire ballroom went silent.
May you like
Ethan drew a slow breath.
And then he pushed himself forward.
