Chapter 9: The Last Betrayal

Nia read the message three times.
Then she showed it to Marcus.
His face hardened.
"Absolutely not.""
"Marcus—"
"No. You're not going anywhere alone.""
Eleanor grabbed Nia's hand.
"He's right. We call the police.""
Nia looked at the photograph.
Evelyn was sitting in the old office with her hands on the desk. The man behind her wore a dark jacket and had his face partially hidden.
But there was something else.
A reflection in the glass cabinet.
A second man.
Victor Hale.
Nia enlarged the photograph.
"Look.""
Marcus examined it.
"That's Victor.""
"He's there.""
Eleanor's voice trembled.
"Then we have to get Evelyn out.""
Marcus called his security chief.
"Send two teams to the old headquarters. Contact local law enforcement. Nobody enters until I arrive.""
He ended the call.
Nia picked up the ledger.
Marcus reached for it.
"Give me that.""
She held it closer.
"No.""
"Nia, they specifically asked for the ledger.""
"Because it's what they want.""
"Exactly.""
"Then we use it.""
Marcus looked at her.
"How?""
Nia opened the ledger to the page containing the eighteen-million-dollar transfer.
"There's something missing from this entry.""
He leaned closer.
"What?""
"The account number.""
Marcus studied the page.
"It ends in 7419.""
Nia turned to the previous page.
There was another reference.
A series of handwritten initials.
"V.H.""
"Victor Hale," Marcus said.
"Not necessarily.""
She pointed to the next line.
"E.B.""
"Evelyn Brooks.""
Then she turned to the final page.
A small note appeared in Daniel's handwriting.
The money was never stolen from the company. It was transferred into an account established for the original beneficiary.
Nia looked up.
"An account for the original beneficiary?""
Marcus frowned.
"Who was that?""
Nia turned the page.
At the bottom was a name.
*ELEANOR CARTER.*
Eleanor stared at it.
"What?""
Nia looked at her mother.
"Grandpa had an account in your name.""
Eleanor shook her head.
"I never knew.""
Marcus examined the note.
"That could explain why Richard wanted the ledger. If the money was moved into a legitimate family trust, Victor may have been using the forged documents to redirect it.""
Nia closed the book.
"Then this ledger isn't just evidence of theft.""
"It's evidence of the original ownership.""
Eleanor looked at her daughter.
"Your grandfather was trying to protect me.""
Nia nodded.
"And Victor wants to erase the evidence.""
Marcus checked his phone.
"Security is ready.""
They left immediately.
The old headquarters looked almost deserted when they arrived.
Rain fell across the stone entrance.
Two security officers stood near the main doors.
Marcus approached them.
"Status?""
"One vehicle entered the underground garage twenty minutes ago. No one has come out.""
"Police?""
"Three minutes away.""
Marcus turned toward Nia.
"Stay behind me.""
She nodded.
They entered the building.
The elevator doors opened on the seventh floor.
The corridor was dark.
At the end, a light shone beneath Daniel's office door.
Marcus signaled to his security team.
One officer moved toward the stairs while another approached the opposite side.
Nia heard a voice inside.
Victor's.
"Where is the ledger?""
Evelyn answered.
"I told you. I don't have it.""
Victor laughed.
"Don't insult my intelligence.""
A sharp sound followed.
Nia moved forward.
Marcus caught her arm.
"Wait.""
Then Victor spoke again.
"You spent twenty-two years working for Daniel. You knew every account, every password, every private instruction. You could have had everything.""
Evelyn's voice trembled.
"I wanted to protect his family.""
"You wanted to protect yourself.""
"I didn't know you had poisoned him.""
Silence.
Nia looked at Marcus.
He raised one finger.
Then Victor spoke.
"Your mistake was believing Daniel would ever have rewarded your loyalty.""
Evelyn began crying.
"He trusted me.""
"And you betrayed him.""
Nia's blood ran cold.
She had expected Victor to threaten Evelyn.
She hadn't expected him to admit so much.
Marcus quietly activated the recording device on his phone.
Victor continued.
"Do you remember the night Daniel died? You brought him the medication.""
Evelyn whispered something.
"What was that?""
"I said I brought him what the doctor prescribed.""
Victor laughed.
"And you didn't notice that the bottle had been replaced?""
"I trusted you.""
"Exactly.""
Nia felt sick.
Victor had used Evelyn's access to the medicine cabinet.
But why had Evelyn collected the medication?
Had she known?
Inside the office, something crashed.
Marcus signaled to the security team.
The door suddenly opened.
A man stepped into the corridor.
He was holding a handgun.
"Don't move!""
The security officers raised their weapons.
Victor appeared behind him.
He looked directly at Nia.
"Well, well.""
Nia stood still.
"Let Evelyn go.""
Victor smiled.
"Bring me the ledger.""
Marcus stepped forward.
"You won't leave this building.""
Victor looked at him.
"Your father said the same thing.""
Marcus's face tightened.
Victor motioned toward the office.
"Come inside.""
Nia glanced at the armed man.
Then at Evelyn, who was sitting beside the desk with a cut above her eyebrow.
She took one step forward.
Marcus whispered, "Nia.""
She shook her head slightly.
"Let her go, Victor.""
Victor gestured toward the chair.
"Sit.""
Nia entered.
Marcus followed.
The armed man shut the door.
Victor removed a glass from the cabinet and poured himself a drink.
"Daniel always believed he could control people by giving them opportunities.""
Nia looked at him.
"Did you poison him?""
Victor took a sip.
"Your grandfather was a difficult man.""
"That's not an answer.""
"He was going to destroy everything I had built.""
"So you killed him?""
Victor smiled.
"I gave him a chance to cooperate. He refused.""
Nia's voice became colder.
"Did you change his medication?""
Victor placed the glass down.
"Your grandfather had a heart condition. He was already taking medication. I merely ensured that his final days were... shorter than expected.""
Evelyn covered her mouth.
Marcus clenched his fists.
Nia kept her expression still.
"Why?""
"Because Daniel intended to transfer control of the company to you.""
"And that frightened you?""
Victor laughed.
"You were a child. Your mother was a liability. Richard was useful, but greedy.
Evelyn was sentimental. I was the only person who understood how the company really worked.""
"You wanted the trust.""
"I deserved the trust.""
Nia looked at him.
"So you forged the documents.""
Victor nodded.
"Your grandfather's signature was easy to reproduce. I had years of correspondence.""
"And my father's death?"" Marcus demanded.
Victor turned toward him.
"Your father discovered the first transfers. He threatened to expose me.""
Marcus stepped closer.
"Did you kill him?""
Victor smiled faintly.
"I arranged for his brakes to fail.""
Marcus lunged.
The armed man raised his weapon.
"Stay back!""
Victor laughed.
"Your father died because he couldn't understand when a powerful man had made a decision.""
Marcus was shaking.
Nia stepped between them.
"Marcus, don't.""
Victor reached across the desk.
"Now, the ledger.""
Nia placed it on the table.
Victor opened it.
He flipped through the pages, searching.
Then he frowned.
"Where is the original trust amendment?""
Nia looked at him.
"I don't have it.""
"Don't lie.""
"I'm not.""
Victor slammed the book down.
"Then where is it?""
Evelyn suddenly stood.
"In the safe.""
Victor turned.
"What?""
"The original amendment is in Daniel's private archive. You never found it.""
Victor stared at her.
"Where?""
Evelyn pointed toward the wall.
"Behind the old painting.""
Victor turned away from them.
It was the moment Marcus needed.
He struck the armed man's wrist, sending the gun sliding across the floor.
A struggle erupted.
The man crashed into the desk.
Victor grabbed the ledger and ran toward the door.
Nia moved after him.
"Stop!""
Victor shoved the door open.
But two security officers were waiting outside.
One tackled him to the floor.
The other secured the weapon.
Marcus hurried toward Nia.
"Are you hurt?""
She shook her head.
"Where's the ledger?""
He looked toward the doorway.
Victor was being restrained.
The ledger lay on the floor.
Nia picked it up.
Then she turned toward Evelyn.
"Are you all right?""
Evelyn nodded weakly.
"I am now.""
Nia crouched beside her.
"Did you know Victor was going to kill Daniel?""
Evelyn began crying.
"No. But I knew he had been using my signature.""
"Why didn't you report him?""
"Because he showed me photographs of my son. I thought if I stayed quiet, he would leave my family alone.""
Nia looked at her.
"And the medication?""
Evelyn lowered her head.
"I collected it. Victor told me it was a replacement prescription. I didn't know what was inside.""
Nia was silent.
Evelyn continued.
"After Daniel died, I discovered the truth. I found the original laboratory report, but Victor took it. He told me that if I ever spoke, he would make sure everyone believed I had poisoned Daniel.""
Nia felt anger and pity fighting inside her.
"Why did you sign the resolution against me?""
"Because he threatened my grandchildren.""
Evelyn reached into her jacket and removed a small key.
"Here.""
Nia looked at it.
"What is this?""
"The key to Daniel's final archive.""
Marcus took it.
"We'll secure it.""
Two hours later, Victor Hale was in police custody.
Richard Whitmore was detained at his home after investigators recovered financial records connecting him to the fraudulent transfers.
The armed man was identified as a former private security contractor employed by one of Victor's shell companies.
But the biggest discovery came from Daniel's archive.
Behind the painting in his old office was a small safe.
Inside lay the original trust amendment, a second toxicology report, and a sealed letter addressed to Nia.
She opened it carefully.
My dearest granddaughter,
If you are reading this, then the people who tried to destroy our family have finally been brought into the light.
There is one final thing I need you to understand.
Money can buy buildings, influence, and silence. It can even buy the appearance of loyalty.
But it cannot buy the truth forever.
I have left you more than a company. I have left you a choice.
You can use this inheritance to become another person who commands others through fear.
Or you can build something that makes people feel safe.
Choose wisely.
Nia folded the letter.
Eleanor placed an arm around her.
"He knew you would come back.""
Nia leaned against her mother's shoulder.
"I wish he could have seen this.""
Marcus stood beside the window.
"There's one more document.""
Nia looked up.
"What?""
He held out the original trust amendment.
"The final beneficiary clause.""
She took it.
The document confirmed her controlling ownership.
But beneath her name was another instruction.
If she accepted the inheritance, she was required to preserve the company as an independent business and maintain the employee protection fund established by Daniel.
Nia smiled faintly.
"He wanted the workers protected.""
Marcus nodded.
"That was always his intention.""
Then his phone rang.
He answered.
"Marcus Cole.""
A voice responded.
"Mr. Cole, this is the district attorney's office. We have a problem.""
Marcus straightened.
"What kind of problem?""
"The evidence against Victor is strong, but his attorney has submitted a document claiming the original trust amendment is invalid.""
"On what grounds?""
"The document contains a second signature from Daniel Cole.""
Marcus frowned.
"That's impossible.""
The prosecutor continued.
"We also found evidence that the original beneficiary was changed before Daniel died.""
Nia took the phone.
"Who was named?""
The prosecutor hesitated.
Then answered.
"Madam, the document names someone else.""
"Who?""
A pause.
Then the name came.
*Madison Whitmore.*
Nia froze.
Madison?
The woman who had humiliated her in the ballroom?
The woman whose husband was connected to the stolen money?
Marcus looked at her in disbelief.
Eleanor covered her mouth.
The prosecutor continued.
"And there's something else. Madison has disappeared.""
Nia stared at the document.
At the bottom, beneath the mysterious signature, was a handwritten sentence.
The original heir is not the person you think.
For the first time since the investigation began, Nia felt that they had not uncovered the end of the conspiracy.
May you like
They had uncovered another beginning.
And Madison Whitmore might be the final piece of a secret Daniel Cole had taken to his grave.
