Chapter 7: The Betrayal in the Boardroom

The photograph was still glowing on Marcus's phone.
Nia stared at it.
It showed her, Eleanor, and Marcus standing inside Daniel Cole's study. The photograph had been taken from the doorway, probably only minutes earlier.
Someone had been inside the mansion.
Someone close enough to hear every word.
Marcus immediately locked the door.
"Nobody leaves this room," he ordered.
Eleanor stood beside the desk, clutching her handbag.
"Who could have taken that picture?""
Marcus looked toward the hallway.
"Someone with access to the security system.""
Nia turned toward him.
"How many people have access?""
"Three security administrators, the property manager, and the executive office.""
"Who controls the executive office?""
Marcus hesitated.
"Evelyn.""
Nia closed her eyes briefly.
She remembered the silver-haired woman embracing her in the boardroom. The warmth in her voice. The way she had called her Daniel's granddaughter.
It had felt genuine.
"Call her," Nia said.
Marcus shook his head.
"That would warn her.""
"She already knows we're investigating. Look at the photograph.""
He considered that.
Then he dialed Evelyn's number.
She answered almost immediately.
"Marcus? Is everything all right?""
"Where are you?""
"At home. Why?""
"Have you been communicating with Richard Whitmore?""
A pause.
"What's this about?""
"Answer the question.""
Evelyn sighed.
"Marcus, I've spent twenty-two years protecting this company. I don't appreciate being interrogated.""
Nia took the phone.
"Evelyn, it's Nia.""
The silence was immediate.
"Miss Carter.""
"I received your email.""
"Then you understand the seriousness of tomorrow's meeting.""
"I understand that you've signed a document attempting to remove me from the company my grandfather left me.""
Evelyn's voice became colder.
"I signed a document protecting the company from an unstable leadership situation.""
"Is that what you call it?""
"You have no experience running a multinational corporation. You've spent the last several weeks working as a temporary employee in one of our hotels. You cannot expect the board to hand you control simply because of your family name.""
Nia looked at Marcus.
"Interesting. You seemed quite pleased to welcome me back yesterday.""
"Yesterday, I believed you were willing to listen.""
"And today?""
"Today, I believe you're being manipulated by people who want to destroy this company.""
Nia's voice remained steady.
"Do you mean my mother?""
Evelyn didn't answer.
Then she said something unexpected.
"Ask Eleanor why Daniel changed his will three days before he died.""
Eleanor's face drained of color.
Nia tightened her grip on the phone.
"What are you talking about?""
"Ask her.""
The call ended.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Eleanor sat down.
Nia turned toward her.
"Mom?""
Eleanor looked at the floor.
"Your grandfather did change his will.""
"Why?""
"Because he discovered something about me.""
Nia felt her stomach tighten.
"What?""
Eleanor opened her handbag and removed an old envelope.
Inside was a legal document bearing Daniel's signature.
"Your grandfather believed I had taken money from the company.""
Nia looked at her.
"Did you?""
"No.""
"Then why did he think that?""
Eleanor unfolded the document.
"Six years before he died, I discovered a transfer from one of his private accounts. I confronted him because I thought someone had stolen his money. But the transaction had been authorized under my name.""
"Someone forged your signature?""
Eleanor nodded.
"Daniel initially believed I had done it. We argued for weeks. Eventually, he discovered that the signature was forged.""
"Then why did he change the will?""
"Because he wanted to protect you from the people who had used my identity.""
Nia read the document.
It was a preliminary amendment to the family trust.
Her name appeared as the primary beneficiary.
But beneath it was another clause.
A provision requiring an independent trustee to oversee the transfer if Eleanor was ever accused of financial misconduct.
Nia looked up.
"Who was the trustee?""
Eleanor pointed to the signature.
"Victor Hale.""
Marcus cursed under his breath.
Nia slowly understood.
Victor hadn't simply stolen money.
He had positioned himself to control the family trust if Eleanor became a suspect.
And Daniel had discovered the arrangement too late.
"Where is the final version?"" Nia asked.
"Your grandfather told me it was stored with the original records.""
"The records we found?""
"Yes.""
Marcus looked at the ledger.
"Then we need to locate the missing attachment.""
Nia's phone rang.
An unknown number.
She answered.
"Hello?""
A man's voice spoke.
"Miss Carter, my name is Samuel Price. I used to work at the company.""
Nia recognized the former maintenance supervisor.
"Mr. Price. Is something wrong?""
"I need to tell you something about Evelyn Brooks.""
Nia exchanged a look with Marcus.
"What is it?""
"She visited my house yesterday.""
"Why?""
"She wanted to know whether I had given you the invoices.""
Nia's expression hardened.
"What did you tell her?""
"That I had.""
A pause.
"Then she offered me money to change my statement.""
Marcus leaned closer.
"How much?""
"Fifty thousand dollars.""
Nia closed her eyes.
"Did you accept?""
"No, ma'am.""
"Did she threaten you?""
Samuel lowered his voice.
"She said I should remember what happened to my job.""
Nia's jaw tightened.
"Did you record the conversation?""
A brief silence.
Then Samuel answered.
"Yes.""
Marcus immediately motioned for Nia to put the phone on speaker.
Samuel continued.
"There's something else. Before she left, she received a call. She said, 'The girl has the ledger. We need to move before Victor arrives.''"
Nia looked at Marcus.
"Victor is coming here?""
"I don't know," Samuel replied.
"But I heard her say something about a private meeting at the Whitmore hotel.""
"Which hotel?""
"The Whitmore Grand.""
Nia thanked him and ended the call.
Marcus paced across the study.
"This is worse than I thought.""
Nia placed the phone on the desk.
"How?""
"Evelyn isn't simply supporting Richard. She's communicating with Victor. And if Victor is coming back into the country, he may have a way to access the original trust.""
"Then tomorrow's board meeting isn't just about removing me.""
Marcus nodded.
"It's about taking control before we can expose them.""
Eleanor looked at the clock.
"What are we going to do?""
Nia straightened.
"We're going to that meeting.""
Marcus shook his head.
"They have enough votes to suspend your authority.""
"Then I'll make sure everyone hears the truth before they vote.""
He studied her.
"That could be dangerous.""
Nia glanced at her mother's frightened face.
"Someone has spent six years making my family afraid. I'm finished being afraid.""
The following morning, the Cole International boardroom was packed.
Executives, attorneys, and several major shareholders had gathered around the long conference table.
Richard Whitmore sat at the head.
He wore a navy suit and a small silver tie pin.
Beside him sat Evelyn Brooks.
A folder containing the proposed removal resolution lay directly in front of her.
When Nia entered, conversations stopped.
Richard stood.
"Miss Carter. I'm glad you decided to attend.""
Nia took the seat opposite him.
"I wouldn't miss it.""
Marcus sat beside her.
Eleanor remained near the back of the room with an attorney.
Richard smiled.
"Before we begin, I want to make one thing clear. This isn't personal.""
Nia looked at the document.
"Then why does it contain my name?""
A few shareholders shifted uncomfortably.
Richard continued.
"The board has concerns about your conduct, your decision-making, and your ability to distinguish personal grievances from corporate interests.""
Nia opened her folder.
"Then let's discuss corporate interests.""
Evelyn rose.
"The motion before us is straightforward. We are requesting a temporary suspension of Miss Carter's voting authority pending a review of her legal status.""
"On what grounds?"" Marcus asked.
Evelyn placed a report on the table.
"Allegations of fraudulent inheritance documentation.""
Nia looked at her.
"Who prepared that report?""
"Our legal department.""
"Which is overseen by you?""
Evelyn's expression remained composed.
"Yes.""
Nia nodded.
"Then you'll have no objection to reviewing the original trust documents.""
Richard interrupted.
"We aren't here to revisit Daniel's estate.""
"That's interesting. Your resolution is specifically challenging my inheritance.""
Richard leaned forward.
"Your grandfather made mistakes. The company cannot be expected to suffer because of family disputes.""
Nia placed the financial ledger on the table.
"Then let's talk about eighteen million dollars.""
Richard's face changed.
Several board members looked toward him.
"What does that mean?"" Gregory Shaw asked.
Nia opened the ledger.
"Six days after Daniel Cole died, eighteen million seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars was transferred to the Whitmore Foundation.""
Richard stood.
"Those records are fabricated.""
"Are they?""
"Absolutely.""
Nia turned toward the legal team.
"Would you like to examine the original handwriting?""
An attorney approached.
He looked at the ledger, then at the supporting documents.
His expression became serious.
"Mr. Whitmore, do you recognize this authorization?""
Richard didn't answer.
Evelyn suddenly stood.
"This is irrelevant. We should proceed with the vote.""
Nia turned toward her.
"Before we do, I have something for you.""
She pressed a button on her laptop.
A recording began playing through the boardroom speakers.
Evelyn's voice filled the room.
"The girl has the ledger. We need to move before Victor arrives.""
The room erupted.
Richard turned toward Evelyn.
"What is this?""
Evelyn's face had lost its color.
"That's been taken out of context.""
Nia looked at her.
"Then explain the context.""
Evelyn reached for the laptop.
Marcus stood immediately.
"Don't touch it.""
Richard began shouting.
"This meeting is over!""
But Nia wasn't finished.
She placed one final document on the table.
A copy of the original financial audit.
It showed that the Whitmore Foundation had received regular payments from three companies connected to Victor Hale.
Richard stared at the page.
Then he looked at Nia.
His voice dropped.
"You have no idea what you've just done.""
Nia held his gaze.
"I think I do.""
Richard turned toward the board.
"Vote now.""
Evelyn lifted the resolution.
But before she could speak, the boardroom doors opened.
A tall, white-haired man entered.
He carried a black leather briefcase.
His eyes moved across the room before settling on Nia.
Then he smiled.
"Well," he said, "I see Daniel's granddaughter has finally learned to ask questions.""
Marcus stood.
"Victor Hale.""
Victor placed his briefcase on the table.
"Good morning, everyone.""
May you like
Then he looked directly at Nia.
"Shall we discuss what really happened to your grandfather?""
