Chapter 8: The Man Who Controlled the Truth

Victor Hale didn't ask permission to sit.
He pulled out the chair beside Richard and placed his briefcase on the table.
Richard looked relieved.
Evelyn looked terrified.
Nia remained still.
"So you're Victor Hale.""
Victor smiled.
"And you're much more like your grandfather than I expected.""
"Did you kill him?""
The question silenced the room.
Victor slowly removed his glasses.
"That's a rather unpleasant way to begin a business meeting.""
"Then give me an unpleasant answer.""
Marcus stepped forward.
"Victor, you are not authorized to attend this meeting.""
Victor opened his briefcase.
"Actually, I am.""
He removed a document and slid it across the table.
"Your grandfather appointed me as an independent trustee of the original family estate. That appointment remains valid under the preliminary trust agreement.""
Nia examined the document.
It carried Daniel's signature.
But the date was wrong.
She looked at Marcus.
He noticed it too.
"That's dated two days after Daniel's death," Marcus said.
Victor smiled.
"A clerical correction.""
"Then why is it signed by a man who was already dead?""
Victor closed his briefcase.
"Careful, Marcus. Your father made similar accusations. Look where that got him.""
Marcus moved toward him.
"Say my father's name again.""
Nia reached for Marcus's arm.
"Don't.""
Victor chuckled.
"Still emotional. Just like James.""
Marcus clenched his jaw.
Nia turned toward Victor.
"You're avoiding my question.""
Victor leaned back.
"Your grandfather died of a heart condition. He was an elderly man with a complicated medical history. I had nothing to do with his death.""
"Then why were his original medical records hidden?""
Victor glanced at Eleanor.
"Because some people were desperate to protect themselves.""
Eleanor stood.
"You're a liar.""
Victor looked at her.
"Hello, Eleanor. It's been a long time.""
"You murdered my father.""
"That's a serious accusation.""
"You changed his medication.""
Victor sighed.
"Your father was ill. You were overwhelmed. Perhaps you should be careful about confusing memory with fact.""
Eleanor's hands shook.
Nia stood beside her.
"Don't speak to my mother like that.""
Victor's smile disappeared.
"Your mother has always been very good at making herself look innocent.""
Nia turned toward the board.
"Before anyone votes, I want everyone to understand something. Mr. Hale's appointment is based on a document dated after my grandfather's death.""
Victor interrupted.
"Which is perfectly legal.""
"Then you'll have no objection to forensic examination.""
For the first time, Victor hesitated.
Marcus noticed.
He opened his folder.
"We've already sent a copy to an independent document examiner.""
Victor looked toward Richard.
Richard's face tightened.
Nia continued.
"The signature appears to have been copied from an earlier document.""
Victor stood.
"This is becoming ridiculous.""
A board member named Patricia Lewis finally spoke.
"Mr. Hale, if the document is legitimate, why are you refusing an examination?""
Victor turned toward her.
"Because this company cannot operate if every old document becomes an excuse for a witch hunt.""
Patricia shook her head.
"We're discussing the legality of your authority.""
Victor's expression hardened.
"Then perhaps we should discuss the authority of the board members themselves.""
He opened another folder.
Inside were copies of private financial statements.
One by one, he placed them in front of the directors.
Nia watched their expressions change.
Gregory Shaw looked horrified.
Patricia covered her mouth.
Richard smiled faintly.
Victor addressed the room.
"Some of you have accepted payments from companies connected to Cole International. Others have approved questionable expenses. And a few have signed documents they probably shouldn't have.""
He looked at Nia.
"Your grandfather understood something you don't. Power isn't about owning the company. It's about knowing what everyone else is hiding.""
Nia studied the papers.
He wasn't simply threatening them.
He had collected leverage against every person in the room.
And he was using it.
Victor turned toward Evelyn.
"Would you like to explain your part?""
Evelyn looked down.
Richard suddenly stood.
"Enough. We have a vote to conduct.""
Victor smiled.
"By all means.""
The board secretary began reading the resolution.
Nia listened carefully.
If the vote passed, her authority would be suspended immediately.
The company could appoint an interim trustee.
And Victor's questionable appointment might become effective.
The secretary reached the final paragraph.
"All those in favor...""
Nia raised her hand.
"Before you vote, I have one more piece of evidence.""
She opened a small audio file.
The recording was from Daniel's old office.
Her grandfather's voice filled the room.
"If you're hearing this, then someone has succeeded in making my family believe that the truth is too dangerous to uncover.""
A murmur spread across the boardroom.
Daniel continued.
"I have spent my life building this company. I have made mistakes. I have trusted the wrong people. But I will not allow the people responsible for stealing from my employees to inherit the company I created.""
Victor's expression changed.
"Turn that off.""
Nia ignored him.
Daniel's voice continued.
"Victor Hale has been moving money through private accounts. Richard Whitmore has approved the transfers. Evelyn Brooks has copies of the original documents.""
Evelyn's head snapped up.
"That's not the complete recording!""
Daniel continued.
"I instructed Evelyn to preserve the evidence. If she has failed to do so, then I ask my granddaughter to look beyond the names written in the accounts.""
The recording ended.
Victor laughed.
"An old man's ramblings. That's all.""
Nia looked at him.
"Why did he mention Evelyn?""
Victor turned toward her.
"Because she was his secretary.""
"Then why is she sitting beside Richard?""
Evelyn finally spoke.
"Because I was trying to keep the company from collapsing.""
Nia faced her.
"By helping Victor?""
Evelyn's eyes filled.
"I never helped him steal anything.""
"Then why did you sign the removal resolution?""
Evelyn looked toward Richard.
He gave her a warning glance.
For a moment, she seemed to struggle with a decision.
Then she stood.
"Because Richard threatened my son.""
The room fell silent.
Nia stared at her.
"Your son?""
Evelyn nodded.
"He lives in Chicago. Richard sent someone to his apartment. They left photographs of his children on the doorstep.""
Richard exploded.
"She's lying!""
Evelyn pulled a folded document from her handbag.
"This is a copy of the message Richard sent me.""
She placed it on the table.
Marcus examined it.
It contained a photograph of Evelyn's son leaving his office, followed by a short message.
Sign the resolution, or your family becomes part of the problem.
Nia looked at Evelyn.
"Why didn't you tell us?""
Evelyn began crying.
"Because I thought I could protect everyone by cooperating.""
"Did you know Victor was involved in Daniel's death?""
Evelyn shook her head.
"I suspected it. But I never had proof.""
Victor stood.
"Enough.""
He reached for the document.
Marcus moved it away.
"Don't.""
Victor's face hardened.
"You're making a serious mistake.""
Nia looked at the board secretary.
"Delay the vote.""
Patricia immediately agreed.
"I support that motion.""
Two other board members raised their hands.
Richard slammed his palm against the table.
"You cannot do this!""
Nia looked at him.
"We just did.""
Victor closed his briefcase.
"Enjoy your little victory.""
He walked toward the doors.
Then he stopped beside Nia.
"You have your mother's courage.""
Nia stared at him.
"And you have my grandfather's fear.""
Victor leaned closer.
"Your grandfather didn't fear me.""
"Then why did he spend his final days hiding evidence?""
Victor smiled.
"Because he was afraid of what your mother might tell you.""
He walked out.
The boardroom remained silent.
Nia turned toward Evelyn.
"Are you willing to testify?""
Evelyn nodded.
"Yes.""
"Will you hand over every document you have?""
"Yes.""
"Then we'll protect your family.""
Evelyn began to cry.
For the first time, she looked like the woman who had once worked beside Daniel rather than the executive who had signed a document against his granddaughter.
Marcus gathered the papers.
"We need to move quickly. Victor knows we have the recordings.""
Nia nodded.
"Then let's find the original medical evidence.""
That evening, they met Dr. Bennett at a small private restaurant outside Boston.
The doctor arrived carrying a brown leather case.
He looked older than the photograph Eleanor remembered, but his eyes were alert.
"Miss Carter.""
Nia shook his hand.
"Thank you for meeting us.""
Dr. Bennett sat down.
"I should have spoken sooner.""
Eleanor looked at him.
"Why didn't you?""
"Because I was afraid.""
He opened the case.
Inside were several medical documents and a sealed laboratory report.
"This is the original toxicology report. I kept it because the replacement report contained altered results.""
Marcus examined it.
"Can we authenticate this?""
"Yes. I also retained the original laboratory reference number.""
Nia looked at the report.
"What does it prove?""
Dr. Bennett pointed to a section.
"The concentration of digoxin was nearly four times the maximum prescribed level. But there was something unusual about the results.""
"What?""
"The substance was mixed with another compound that delayed the symptoms.""
Eleanor covered her mouth.
"Someone wanted him to die slowly?""
Dr. Bennett nodded.
"It would have made the symptoms look like a worsening heart condition.""
Nia's eyes filled with anger.
"Who had access to the medication?""
"Your grandfather's records show three authorized individuals. But the pharmacy delivery log contains a fourth signature.""
Marcus leaned forward.
"Whose?""
The doctor removed another document.
He placed it on the table.
Nia looked at the name.
Then she looked at Eleanor.
The signature belonged to Richard Whitmore.
But beneath it was a handwritten note.
Delivered by special instruction from E. Brooks.
Nia slowly raised her eyes.
"Evelyn.""
Dr. Bennett nodded.
"She collected the medication two days before Daniel died.""
Marcus looked stunned.
"She told us she was protecting the evidence.""
"Perhaps she was," Dr. Bennett replied.
"But she also had access to the medication.""
Eleanor began shaking her head.
"No. She loved my father.""
The doctor closed the file.
"People can love someone and still betray them.""
Nia stared at the document.
She remembered Evelyn's tears.
Her confession.
Her willingness to testify.
Something didn't fit.
Then her phone rang.
It was Evelyn.
Nia answered.
"Hello?""
Evelyn's voice was trembling.
"Miss Carter, you need to listen carefully.""
"What happened?""
"Victor knows about the original report.""
"How?""
"I don't know. But he's coming for it.""
"Where are you?""
"I'm at the old headquarters.""
Nia stood.
"Stay there. We're coming.""
Evelyn's voice dropped to a whisper.
"There's something else. I found the original trust amendment. The one Daniel signed before he died.""
"Where?""
"In his private archive.""
"What's in it?""
A pause.
Then Evelyn whispered:
"It names the person who was supposed to inherit control if you were ever declared legally unfit.""
Nia gripped the phone.
"Who?""
Evelyn answered.
"Victor Hale.""
The call abruptly disconnected.
Marcus stood.
"Something's wrong.""
Nia grabbed her coat.
"Let's go.""
But before they could leave, another message appeared on her phone.
A photograph.
Evelyn was sitting in Daniel's old office.
Behind her stood a man holding a gun.
May you like
The message beneath it contained only six words.
*BRING THE LEDGER. COME ALONE.*
