Chapter 4: The Mother Behind the Door

"Nia? Open the door.""

The voice came again.

Soft. Familiar. Almost painfully gentle.

Nia stood motionless beside her grandfather's desk. Her fingers were wrapped around the edge of the wooden table, and her eyes remained fixed on the locked office door.

For six years, she had imagined hearing that voice again.

Six years of unanswered calls. Six years of searching hospitals, police records, and old addresses. Six years of waking up in the middle of the night convinced she had heard her mother calling her name.

And now that voice was on the other side of a door.

"Mom?"" Nia whispered.

Marcus moved between her and the entrance.

"Don't open it yet.""

Nia stared at him.

"Are you serious?""

"Listen to me. We don't know who's outside.""

A woman's voice came again.

"Sweetheart, please. It's me.""

Nia's eyes filled with tears.

"Move, Marcus.""

He didn't.

"Nia, there are things you need to understand before—"

"Six years!"" she interrupted.

"I've spent six years wondering whether my mother was alive. You don't get to stand between us now.""

Marcus lowered his head.

Then he stepped aside.

Nia unlocked the door.

It opened slowly.

A woman stood in the corridor.

She was thinner than Nia remembered. Her dark hair had turned silver around the temples, and there were deep lines around her eyes. She wore a simple beige coat and held a worn leather handbag against her chest.

But there was no mistaking her.

Eleanor Carter.

Nia's mother.

For several seconds, neither woman moved.

Then Eleanor whispered, "My baby.""

Nia covered her mouth.

"Mom?""

Eleanor reached for her.

Nia ran into her arms.

The handbag fell to the floor.

They held each other in the doorway, both crying, neither able to find the words that could explain six years of separation.

"You're alive," Nia sobbed.

Eleanor kissed the top of her head.

"I'm here, sweetheart. I'm here.""

"Why didn't you call me?""

Eleanor closed her eyes.

"I'm sorry.""

"Why didn't you come home?""

"I'm so sorry.""

"Do you know what I went through?""

Eleanor held her tighter.

"I know. And there isn't a day I've lived that I haven't regretted leaving you.""

Nia pulled away.

Her tears had not stopped, but her expression had changed.

"Leaving me?""

Eleanor looked down.

Marcus closed the office door behind them.

Nia turned toward him.

"You knew she was alive?""

Marcus nodded slowly.

"Yes.""

The answer struck harder than she expected.

Nia stepped backward.

"You knew?""

"I was trying to protect you.""

"From what? My own mother?""

Eleanor reached for her hand.

"Nia, please. Don't blame Marcus.""

Nia looked at her.

"Then tell me the truth.""

Eleanor glanced toward the photograph on the desk.

"Your grandfather discovered that money was being stolen from the company. At first, he believed it was ordinary financial misconduct. Then he found evidence that someone inside the company had been falsifying records for years.""

"Richard?""

"Richard was involved, but he wasn't working alone.""

Nia remembered the photograph.

Three people.

Daniel.

Evelyn.

Richard.

"Who was the third person?""

Eleanor hesitated.

"Your grandfather's chief financial adviser. A man named Victor Hale.""

Marcus nodded.

"Victor resigned shortly before Daniel died.""

"Why?"" Nia asked.

"Officially, he retired. Unofficially, he disappeared.""

Eleanor sat down in her father's old chair.

"Your grandfather discovered that Victor had been moving money through shell companies. Richard approved several of the transactions. But the person who arranged the original accounts had access to everything.""

"Who?""

Eleanor looked directly at her daughter.

"Someone your grandfather trusted more than anyone.""

Nia felt a chill.

"Who?""

Eleanor's voice dropped.

"His personal secretary. Evelyn Brooks.""

Nia looked toward Marcus.

He didn't appear surprised.

That frightened her more than anything.

"You're telling me Evelyn was stealing from my grandfather?""

"Not exactly," Marcus replied.

"She discovered the transfers and helped him collect evidence. But she also made a mistake.""

"What mistake?""

"She trusted Victor.""

Eleanor nodded.

"Victor found out about the investigation. He threatened your grandfather and then threatened me.""

Nia's eyes narrowed.

"Why you?""

"Because I had a copy of the original financial records.""

Eleanor reached into her handbag and removed a small photograph.

It showed Daniel standing beside a young Eleanor.

On the back was a date.

The night before Daniel's death.

"Your grandfather gave me these records and told me to leave the country with you. I refused. I thought we could fight Victor together.""

"What happened?""

"Two days later, there was a fire at our house.""

Nia stared at her.

"I remember that.""

Eleanor nodded.

"You were asleep upstairs. Someone broke into the house. I managed to get you out, but I was injured. When I woke up in the hospital, Marcus was there.""

Marcus looked away.

"I had been sent by Daniel to find you.""

Eleanor continued.

"Victor's people had already convinced everyone that I had died in the fire. They wanted the records. And they wanted you.""

Nia felt sick.

"So you disappeared to protect me?""

"I was told that if I contacted you, they would find you.""

"Who told you?""

Eleanor hesitated.

"Victor.""

Nia stared at her mother.

"You believed him?""

"I was terrified. I had lost my father. I had no money, no protection, and no idea who I could trust.""

Nia's voice cracked.

"You could have trusted me.""

Eleanor reached for her hand.

"You were nineteen, Nia. I couldn't put that burden on you.""

Nia pulled her hand away.

"Instead, you left me to carry it alone.""

The room fell silent.

Eleanor began to cry.

Marcus looked at Nia but said nothing.

After a moment, Nia took a breath.

"Where have you been living?""

"London. A small apartment near the river.""

"Why come back now?""

Eleanor glanced at the flash drive.

"Because someone sent me a message three days ago.""

"What message?""

"That Victor was back.""

Marcus stiffened.

"That's impossible. We checked his last known address.""

"Then you checked the wrong place," Eleanor replied.

She reached into her handbag again and produced a folded newspaper.

The front page carried a photograph of a man attending a private business conference.

The headline read:

*MYSTERIOUS INVESTOR RETURNS TO US MARKETS AFTER SIX-YEAR ABSENCE.*

Nia stared at the photograph.

The man had white hair, a narrow face, and cold eyes.

Victor Hale.

Beneath the photograph was the name of his new investment company.

Hale Strategic Capital.

Nia looked at Marcus.

"How much money does he control?""

"Enough to create serious problems if he still has access to the old accounts.""

Eleanor stood.

"There's something else.""

Nia waited.

"Your grandfather didn't simply leave you the company. He left you a sealed authorization that allows you to access a private account containing the original records of every transaction Victor made.""

Marcus frowned.

"I thought that account had been destroyed.""

"Daniel told me where it was.""

"Where?""

Eleanor looked at her daughter.

"Under the old family estate.""

Nia remembered the house where she had spent her childhood summers.

A large white mansion surrounded by oak trees.

It had been sold shortly after Daniel died.

"Who owns it now?""

Marcus checked his phone.

"Whitmore Properties.""

Nia froze.

"Richard?""

Marcus nodded.

Eleanor sat down again.

"Then Victor and Richard are closer than we thought.""

Nia looked toward the window.

The city lights shimmered in the distance.

She had returned to claim a legacy.

Instead, she had uncovered a conspiracy involving the two men who had destroyed her family.

And now she finally understood why Madison had looked so frightened when Marcus called her by her real name.

She was not simply the granddaughter of a billionaire.

She was the only person who could expose them.

Her phone vibrated.

A new message appeared.

*YOUR MOTHER SHOULD HAVE STAYED DEAD.*

Nia showed it to Marcus.

His expression hardened.

Eleanor grabbed her daughter's arm.

"They know I'm here.""

Before Marcus could respond, his phone rang.

He answered.

"Marcus Cole.""

A man's voice came through the speaker.

"Mr. Cole, we have a situation.""

"What happened?""

"The Whitmore estate. There's been a break-in.""

Marcus stood.

"Was anything stolen?""

The man hesitated.

"Yes, sir.""

"What?""

"A photograph of Daniel Cole's original safe. And the master key.""

Marcus looked at Nia.

Then Eleanor.

May you like

Someone had just beaten them to the one place where the truth was hidden.

And whoever it was knew exactly what they were looking for.
