Chapter 2: The Name Behind the Uniform

Madison stood frozen as Marcus offered Nia his arm.
"Wait a minute," she demanded.
Marcus stopped.
Madison looked around, searching for someone who could explain what was happening.
"Marcus, I think you've been misled. That woman works here. She's a maid.""
Marcus adjusted his cuff.
"Thank you for informing me. I was unaware.""
A few guests lowered their heads to hide their reactions.
Madison's cheeks burned.
"Don't be sarcastic. I'm trying to help you understand.""
"Then perhaps you should listen for a moment.""
His voice wasn't loud.
It didn't need to be.
Madison glanced at Nia.
"Who are you?""
Nia looked at the woman who had just tried to crush her foot beneath a designer heel.
"My name is Nia Carter.""
"I know your name. It's written on your uniform.""
"Then you already know everything you need to know about me.""
Marcus almost smiled.
Madison didn't.
"Don't play games with me.""
A man hurried toward them from the opposite side of the ballroom.
It was Richard Whitmore, Madison's husband.
Richard was in his early fifties, with silver hair, an expensive watch, and the permanent expression of someone who believed every room belonged to him.
He had spent the evening speaking to investors and congratulating himself on securing a promising business partnership.
When he saw Marcus, his face brightened.
"Marcus! There you are.""
Richard extended his hand.
"I've been trying to reach you all evening. We need to discuss the acquisition.""
Marcus looked at his hand but didn't take it.
"Not tonight, Richard.""
Richard's smile weakened.
"Of course. Another time.""
Then he noticed Nia.
His expression changed.
"What's going on here?""
Madison immediately stepped toward him.
"Your guest is making a ridiculous scene. This maid has somehow convinced Marcus that she's important.""
Richard looked at Nia.
For several seconds, he studied her face.
Then his eyes moved to the black envelope.
His smile vanished.
"Where did you get that?""
Nia held the envelope against her side.
"Marcus gave it to me.""
Richard turned toward Marcus.
"What's this about?""
Marcus finally shook his hand.
"The extraordinary general meeting.""
Richard frowned.
"That's scheduled for next month.""
"It was.""
"What does that mean?""
"It means the controlling shareholder requested an emergency meeting.""
Richard looked toward the guests.
"Who?""
Marcus's eyes moved briefly to Nia.
"She's standing right here.""
Madison let out a short, disbelieving laugh.
"That's impossible.""
Richard didn't laugh.
He looked at Nia again.
Something in her expression seemed familiar.
Not her uniform.
Not her face.
Something else.
A memory.
A photograph he had once seen in an old corporate office.
A young woman standing beside a distinguished man in front of the original Cole International headquarters.
Richard's throat tightened.
"Nia Carter," he whispered.
Nia met his gaze.
"Good evening, Mr. Whitmore.""
Richard took a step backward.
Madison grabbed his sleeve.
"Richard, what's wrong with you?""
He didn't answer.
Marcus looked toward the ballroom doors.
"Mr. Whitmore, I suggest we move this conversation somewhere private.""
Richard nodded too quickly.
"Yes. Of course.""
Madison shook her head.
"No. Nobody is going anywhere until someone explains what's happening.""
She pointed at Nia.
"She was hired to serve drinks. I have the employee records. I can prove it.""
Nia looked at her calmly.
"You're right. You can.""
Madison frowned.
"What?""
"I was hired as a temporary banquet attendant.""
"Exactly!""
"But that doesn't mean it's the only thing I do.""
Madison looked at Marcus.
He finally spoke.
"Miss Carter is the granddaughter of the late Daniel Cole.""
The name struck the room like a thunderclap.
Several guests gasped.
Daniel Cole was the legendary founder of Cole International Holdings. His name appeared on hospital wings, university buildings, hotel chains, and charitable foundations across the country.
He had built his empire from a small family business into a global corporation.
He had died six years earlier.
And according to the official records, he had left no living descendants.
Madison shook her head.
"That's not possible. Daniel Cole never had grandchildren.""
Nia looked down for a moment.
"That's what everyone was told.""
Richard's face had gone pale.
Marcus continued.
"Daniel Cole had one daughter, Eleanor. She disappeared from public life many years ago. Her daughter is Nia.""
Madison stared at her.
"You're saying she's family?""
"More than that," Marcus replied.
He paused.
"She's the principal beneficiary of the Carter-Cole family trust and the majority voting shareholder of Cole International Holdings.""
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then a low murmur spread across the ballroom.
Richard gripped his champagne glass so tightly that his knuckles turned white.
Madison looked at Nia's plain black uniform.
Her inexpensive shoes.
Her modest hairstyle.
Then she looked at the woman again.
"You're lying.""
Nia didn't raise her voice.
"Would you like to see the documents?""
Madison laughed nervously.
"Anyone can print a document.""
Marcus opened a leather folder.
"These were authenticated by three independent legal firms, reviewed by the company's external auditors, and confirmed by the probate court.""
He handed a copy to Richard.
Richard read the first page.
Then the second.
His fingers began to shake.
Madison snatched the papers from him.
"Richard?""
He didn't respond.
She scanned the document.
At the bottom was a name.
Nia Eleanor Carter.
Beside it was the official confirmation of her controlling voting rights.
Madison's mouth fell open.
"But... why would you work here?""
Nia glanced around the ballroom.
The crystal chandeliers.
The expensive flowers.
The guests who had watched her being insulted without intervening.
"Because I wanted to understand the people who work here.""
Madison frowned.
"What does that mean?""
Nia turned toward the entrance where a young waiter was collecting the broken glass.
"How much do you know about the people who clean this ballroom after everyone goes home?""
Madison rolled her eyes.
"That's not relevant.""
"It is to me.""
Nia looked at the waiter.
"What is your name?""
The young man hesitated.
"Daniel, ma'am.""
"How long have you worked here?""
"Almost four years.""
"Do you enjoy it?""
He glanced toward Madison.
She shot him a warning look.
"Answer her!"" Madison snapped.
Daniel swallowed.
"Not particularly, ma'am.""
"Why?""
He looked down.
"I'd rather not say.""
Nia nodded gently.
"I understand.""
She turned toward Marcus.
"Have the staff been interviewed?""
"Yes. Privately.""
"All departments?""
"Every department.""
"Good.""
Madison's expression sharpened.
"Wait. What is this? Are you investigating us?""
Nia looked directly at her.
"I'm investigating the company.""
"Why?""
"Because my grandfather built something that was supposed to protect people, not frighten them.""
Richard finally found his voice.
"This is absurd. You're making decisions based on a few conversations with employees.""
Nia looked at him.
"Then you won't mind if we review the records.""
Richard straightened.
"What records?""
"Payroll. Vendor payments. Employee complaints.
Executive expenses. Everything.""
His jaw tightened.
Marcus closed his folder.
"The board has already requested the records.""
Richard's expression shifted.
"When?""
"Three days ago.""
Richard looked toward Marcus.
"You went behind my back?""
"I followed the instructions of the controlling shareholder.""
Madison stepped between them.
"This is ridiculous. Richard has spent fifteen years building relationships for this company. You can't walk in here and threaten him because you have an inheritance.""
Nia's expression softened slightly.
"I don't want to threaten anyone.""
Madison laughed.
"Really?""
"I want the truth.""
Then Nia looked at Richard.
"And I think you're afraid of what we'll find.""
Richard's face turned rigid.
"Be careful what you accuse people of.""
Nia nodded.
"That's exactly why I'm asking for documents instead of making accusations.""
Marcus checked his watch.
"The board is ready.""
Nia handed the black envelope back to him.
"Let's go.""
As she walked away, Madison suddenly called after her.
"You're not leaving like this!""
Nia stopped.
Madison's voice trembled with anger.
"You can't just walk into our lives and destroy everything because I embarrassed you!""
Nia slowly turned.
"I didn't destroy anything, Madison.""
She glanced at the champagne stains on the marble.
"You made your own choices.""
Then she walked through the ballroom doors beside Marcus.
Richard stood motionless.
Madison grabbed his arm.
"Tell me she's bluffing.""
Richard didn't answer.
"Richard!""
He looked at his wife.
May you like
And finally, in a voice barely above a whisper, he said something that made her blood run cold.
"Madison... we need to find out what she knows about the accounts.""
