Chapter 9: The Man Who Never Left

For twenty-four years, I had wondered why my life had started with a mystery.

Why I had no childhood photographs.

Why my earliest memories were fragments.

Why a silver locket was the only piece of a family I never knew I had.

I thought finding the Sterling family would give me answers.

I never imagined it would reveal that the person who destroyed our family had been standing in the shadows the entire time.

Richard Hayes was alive.

And he was inside Sterling Manor.

Daniel moved instantly.

“Lock down the house.””

Marcus was already speaking into his radio.

“Security teams to the main entrance. Nobody enters or leaves.””

I stood frozen.

“He’s here?””

Daniel looked at me.

His expression changed immediately.

Not fear for himself.

Fear for me.

“Lily, stay behind me.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Please.””

“I spent my entire life running from a truth I didn’t even know existed.””

I held the locket around my neck.

“I’m not hiding now.””

For a moment, Daniel looked like he wanted to argue.

Then he nodded.

“You really are my sister.””

The words almost made me smile.

Almost.

Then the mansion lights went out.

Every hallway disappeared into darkness.

A second later, the security alarms started screaming.

Marcus cursed under his breath.

“He disabled the internal system.””

Daniel looked at him.

“How?””

Marcus hesitated.

“There’s only one person who knows the original security layout.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“My father.””

The silence that followed was terrifying.

Richard hadn’t broken into the mansion.

He had entered through knowledge that had been passed down.

Through secrets.

Through trust.

A flashlight moved across the hallway.

A security guard appeared.

“Mr. Sterling.””

Daniel turned.

“What happened?””

The guard looked confused.

“We found the front gate open.””

“Open?””

“Yes.””

Marcus frowned.

“That’s impossible.””

Then a voice echoed from the darkness.

“Nothing is impossible when you know where the keys are.””

Everyone froze.

A man stepped into the light.

Older than the photographs.

Gray hair.

Expensive suit.

The same confident smile I had seen on Victoria.

Richard Hayes.

The man who had haunted my family for decades.

Daniel stepped forward.

“You.””

Richard smiled.

“Hello, Daniel.””

Daniel’s fists tightened.

“You’re supposed to be dead.””

Richard laughed softly.

“That was the point.””

I watched him carefully.

There was no panic.

No desperation.

He walked through the mansion like he owned it.

Like he belonged there.

“You ruined my family.””

Daniel’s voice shook with anger.

Richard tilted his head.

“Did I?””

“You took my sister.””

“No.””

Richard looked at me.

“I saved her.””

My stomach turned.

“You don’t get to say that.””

His eyes moved to me.

For the first time, his expression changed.

Recognition.

“You look like your mother.””

I stepped back.

“Don’t talk about her.””

Richard smiled sadly.

“She was a remarkable woman.””

Daniel moved between us.

“Why?””

Richard looked at him.

“Why what?””

“Why did you do it?””

Richard sighed.

“Because your father was weak.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“My father loved his family.””

“Your father loved his family too much.””

Richard walked closer.

“He believed money could protect people. He believed power could stop evil.””

He looked around the mansion.

“But power only attracts people who want to take it.””

“You wanted Sterling Industries.””

Richard smiled.

“I wanted what your father promised me.””

Daniel frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

Richard looked surprised.

“You never knew.””

Nobody spoke.

Richard continued.

“Your father and I built Sterling Industries together.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“My father built that company.””

“Your father built the name.””

Richard’s voice became colder.

“I built the empire.””

The accusation hung in the air.

“But when the company became valuable, your father decided I was no longer necessary.””

Daniel shook his head.

“That’s a lie.””

“Is it?””

Richard reached into his coat.

He pulled out an old document.

“My original partnership agreement.””

Marcus immediately stepped forward.

Daniel stopped him.

“Let him talk.””

Richard smiled.

“Your father betrayed me first.””

I stared at him.

“So you took revenge on a child?””

Richard looked at me.

“No.””

His voice softened.

“I protected you.””

The anger inside me finally broke.

“You erased my life.””

Richard’s expression changed.

“You were four years old.””

“And you stole my family.””

“I gave you a chance to survive.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“You manipulated everyone.””

Richard looked at him.

“You’re angry because you found out your father wasn’t the hero you imagined.””

That sentence hit Daniel.

Because there was truth mixed with the lies.

Richard saw it.

He smiled.

“Your father made a deal with me.””

Daniel went still.

“What deal?””

Richard looked at me.

“He agreed Lily would disappear.””

“No.””

Daniel’s voice was immediate.

Richard pulled out another document.

“Read it.””

Daniel took the paper.

His face changed as he scanned the page.

I looked at him.

“What is it?””

He didn’t answer.

Richard did.

“A legal agreement.””

He smiled.

“Your father signed away his daughter’s identity.””

Daniel’s hands shook.

“Why?””

Richard looked at him.

“Because he believed I would protect her.””

The room became silent.

I stared at Daniel.

“Is it true?””

He looked devastated.

“I don’t know.””

Richard smiled.

“That’s the problem with families built on secrets.””

He stepped backward.

“Everyone thinks they know the truth.””

Marcus suddenly moved.

“Don’t move.””

Richard stopped.

Then laughed.

“You still think this is about me.””

A terrible feeling filled my chest.

“What does that mean?””

Richard looked at me.

“I came here because I wanted Daniel to know the truth.””

He smiled.

“But the person who truly betrayed you…”

He glanced toward the doorway.

“…is still standing in this house.””

Everyone turned.

A figure stood in the shadows.

My breath caught.

Because I recognized the face.

Eleanor.

May you like

Richard smiled.

“Ask your aunt what she really did the night you disappeared.””
