Chapter 2: The Billionaire’s Missing Sister

Daniel Sterling looked like a man who had just seen a ghost.

For years, I had imagined what it would feel like to discover where I came from.

I imagined happiness.

Relief.

A family finally opening their arms to me.

I never imagined standing in a billionaire’s ballroom while hundreds of strangers watched me become the center of a scandal.

Daniel stared at the locket.

Then at me.

Then back at the photograph.

“Where did you find this?”” he asked.

I shook my head.

“I don’t know.””

His eyes filled with tears.

“You don’t know?””

“I was wearing it when I was found.””

The room remained completely silent.

Victoria stood several feet away, frozen.

For the first time that night, she looked afraid.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Tell me everything.””

I looked around.

At the guests.

At the cameras.

At the people who had just accused me of theft.

“I don’t think this is the place.””

Daniel immediately turned.

“Everyone leaves.””

Nobody moved.

He raised his voice.

“I said leave.””

The billionaire who controlled companies across the world had never sounded more desperate.

Within minutes, the ballroom emptied.

Only a few people remained.

Daniel.

Victoria.

His security team.

And me.

A man wearing a dark suit approached.

“Mr. Sterling.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Marcus?””

The security chief held a tablet in his hand.

“I found something else.””

Victoria’s face changed.

“What do you mean?””

Marcus ignored her.

He handed the tablet to Daniel.

On the screen was a photograph from the evening.

Victoria standing outside the service entrance.

Talking to someone.

Daniel frowned.

“Who is that?””

Marcus zoomed in.

“It’s one of the photographers hired for tonight.””

“And?””

“He wasn’t hired by the event company.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“What?””

Marcus continued.

“He was brought here under Victoria’s personal guest list.””

Victoria stepped forward.

“This is ridiculous.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Why would you bring an unauthorized photographer?””

“I didn’t.””

Marcus tapped the screen.

“There’s more.””

Another image appeared.

Victoria holding a file folder.

My stomach tightened.

“What is that?””

Marcus looked at me.

“A background report.””

My blood ran cold.

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“About who?””

Marcus hesitated.

Then answered.

“Her.””

He pointed at me.

Victoria immediately spoke.

“She’s a waitress. Why would I investigate her?””

Nobody answered.

Because everyone already knew.

Daniel looked at his fiancée.

“You knew who she was?””

Victoria’s lips parted.

“No.””

But her voice cracked.

Marcus opened another file.

“She searched for Lily Harper three weeks ago.””

My heart stopped.

Lily Harper.

That was the name written on my old adoption records.

The name I had stopped using years ago.

Daniel looked at me.

“Your name was Lily Harper?””

I nodded slowly.

“I changed it after I left the orphanage.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

Like hearing my name hurt him.

“My sister was named Lily Sterling.””

The words landed harder than any accusation.

“Sister?””

Daniel walked toward the fireplace.

“My parents had two children.””

He stared into the flames.

“My brother and I.””

He paused.

“And Lily.””

The room became colder.

“She disappeared when she was four.””

I touched my locket.

“What happened?””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“The official story was that she wandered away from our family’s vacation house.””

“And you believed that?””

“No.””

The answer came immediately.

“I never believed it.””

He turned toward me.

“My mother spent the rest of her life searching for her.””

I looked down.

A strange pain filled my chest.

I had no memories of my mother.

Only fragments.

A woman singing softly.

A warm hand holding mine.

A silver locket pressed against my skin.

Daniel noticed my expression.

“Do you remember anything?””

I closed my eyes.

“I remember rain.””

Everyone listened.

“A woman screaming my name.””

My voice shook.

“Then a car door.””

Daniel went pale.

“What else?””

I swallowed.

“Someone saying… ‘They can never know she survived.’”

The room went completely silent.

Victoria slowly stepped backward.

Daniel noticed.

His eyes moved toward her.

“Victoria.””

She forced a smile.

“What?””

“Why are you afraid?””

“I’m not.””

But she was.

And everyone could see it.

Marcus walked forward.

“There’s one more thing, Mr. Sterling.””

Daniel looked at him.

“What?””

Marcus placed another photograph on the table.

It showed Victoria years earlier.

Standing beside an old newspaper article.

The headline was clear.

“Sterling Family’s Missing Daughter Turns Twenty.””

Daniel picked up the photo.

His hands shook.

“Where did you get this?””

Marcus lowered his voice.

“From Victoria’s private office.””

Daniel stared at his fiancée.

“You knew.””

Victoria’s eyes filled with panic.

“I can explain.””

“You knew who she was before tonight.””

“I didn’t know for certain.””

The words escaped her mouth.

Then she realized her mistake.

Daniel stepped back.

“Not for certain?””

Nobody spoke.

Victoria covered her mouth.

She had revealed the truth herself.

Daniel looked at me.

Then at the woman he planned to marry.

And for the first time, I saw something in his eyes that wasn’t sadness.

It was fury.

“Why did you bring my sister here?””

Victoria said nothing.

Daniel’s voice dropped.

“Victoria.””

She finally looked up.

And whispered:

“Because if Lily Sterling came back…”

She stopped.

But it was already too late.

Daniel moved closer.

“Because what?””

Victoria’s face turned completely white.

“Because she was supposed to be dead.””

The words hung in the air.

May you like

And I realized the locket around my neck hadn’t just led me to my family.

It had brought me straight into the secret someone had killed to protect.
