Chapter 6: The Father’s Hidden Room
The words felt impossible.
“My father?””
Daniel repeated it like he didn’t understand the language.
Eleanor looked devastated.
“I didn’t want to believe it.””
“Then why say it now?””
“Because Lily is back.””
Daniel stepped away.
“My father spent his entire life looking for her.””
Eleanor shook her head.
“No.””
The single word broke something inside him.
“No?””
“He spent his life making sure nobody found the truth.””
I watched Daniel’s face.
The man who controlled billion-dollar companies suddenly looked like a child hearing his family was not what he thought.
“My father loved Lily.””
Eleanor nodded.
“He did.””
“Then why?””
“Because love and fear can exist together.””
Nobody spoke.
Eleanor sat down slowly.
Her hands trembled.
“The night Lily disappeared, your father received a phone call.””
“From who?””
“I don’t know.””
Daniel stared at her.
“You don’t know?””
“I only heard his side.””
She looked at me.
“He was angry. Terrified.””
“What did he say?””
Eleanor closed her eyes.
“He said, ‘You promised me she would never come back.’”
The room went silent.
Daniel looked sick.
“And then?””
“He left the house.””
“Alone?””
“No.””
Eleanor hesitated.
“With someone.””
“Who?””
She looked at me.
“I never saw the person’s face.””
Daniel walked away.
“This can’t be true.””
Marcus quietly spoke.
“Mr. Sterling.””
Daniel turned.
“We should search the old house records.””
“What records?””
“The private estate blueprints.””
Marcus opened his tablet.
“Your father had a hidden room beneath the east wing.””
Daniel frowned.
“There is no room beneath the east wing.””
“There is according to these plans.””
My heart raced.
A hidden room.
A missing child.
A family built on lies.
It sounded like something from a nightmare.
Daniel looked at me.
“Stay here.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“Lily—”
“No.””
The name stopped me.
I wasn’t used to hearing it.
But this time, I didn’t run from it.
“I spent my whole life wondering who I was.””
I held up the locket.
“I’m done letting other people decide what I deserve to know.””
Daniel looked at me for a long moment.
Then nodded.
“Okay.””
We walked through the east wing together.
The mansion was older there.
The walls were darker.
The paintings showed generations of Sterlings staring down at us.
Marcus stopped in front of a wooden panel.
“This should be it.””
Daniel touched the wall.
Nothing happened.
Then I noticed something.
A small mark.
A carving.
A tiny bird.
My fingers moved toward it.
The second I touched it, something clicked.
The wall opened.
Daniel stared.
“You knew?””
I shook my head.
“I don’t know why.””
Inside was a narrow staircase leading underground.
The air smelled old.
Dust.
Paper.
Memories.
We walked down slowly.
At the bottom was a small room.
A room frozen in time.
A child’s bedroom.
My breath disappeared.
There was a small wooden horse.
A faded blanket.
And drawings covering the wall.
One drawing showed a family.
A mother.
A father.
Two boys.
And a little girl wearing a silver necklace.
I touched the paper.
A memory flashed.
A voice.
A woman laughing.
“Lily, don’t hide your necklace.””
I stepped back.
Daniel caught my shoulder.
“What happened?””
“I remember.””
Everyone froze.
“What?””
I stared at the drawing.
“My mother.””
My voice shook.
“She was here.””
Marcus searched the room.
“There’s something else.””
He pulled open a drawer.
Inside were documents.
Daniel grabbed them.
The first page made his face change.
“What is it?””
He handed it to me.
It was a medical record.
My name was at the top.
*Lily Sterling.*
Below it was a note.
*Patient transferred under false identity.*
I felt dizzy.
“Someone changed my identity.””
Daniel kept reading.
Then stopped.
“What?””
He looked terrified.
“What does it say?””
His hand shook.
“It says the transfer was approved by…”
He couldn’t finish.
I looked at the paper.
The signature was clear.
A name I recognized.
May you like
A name that had been standing beside us all along.
*Eleanor Sterling.*
