Chapter 5: The Woman in the Photograph
I stared at the photograph until my eyes burned.
The woman standing beside my mother wasn’t a stranger.
She wasn’t an enemy who had appeared from nowhere.
She was family.
Eleanor Sterling.
Daniel’s aunt.
The woman who had hugged me that morning and pretended to be shocked that I was alive.
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“She knew.””
Daniel didn’t answer immediately.
His eyes remained fixed on the picture.
“She knew you were alive.””
The anger in his voice was different from the night of the gala.
That anger had been controlled.
This was something deeper.
Something that came from years of betrayal.
Eleanor had been the person who welcomed me into the mansion.
She had brought me tea.
She had touched my shoulder and said she was grateful I had returned.
All while knowing she was connected to the night I disappeared.
“I don’t understand,” I whispered.
Daniel looked at me.
“What?””
“If she knew something happened… why did she help us?””
He looked toward the window.
“Maybe she wasn’t helping us.””
The thought made my stomach twist.
Marcus took the phone from Daniel and studied the image.
“This photograph was taken two days before Lily disappeared.””
Daniel turned sharply.
“You’re sure?””
“Yes.””
Marcus pointed at the corner.
“The date stamp is original.””
Daniel walked toward the desk.
“My father kept this hidden.””
“And your aunt knew about it,” Marcus added.
The room felt smaller.
A family secret that had been buried for decades was finally coming alive.
But every answer seemed to create another question.
Daniel picked up the letter from my mother.
“There has to be more.””
Marcus nodded.
“I agree.””
“Where did you find the box?””
“In the old family archive room.””
Daniel frowned.
“That room was locked after my father died.””
Marcus looked uncomfortable.
“It wasn’t locked from the inside.””
Daniel understood immediately.
Someone had been entering.
Someone had been searching.
I looked at the letter again.
The words from my mother echoed in my mind.
Someone who smiles while destroying everything behind closed doors.
A knock interrupted us.
All three of us turned.
The door opened.
Eleanor stood there.
Her face was pale.
“I know what you found.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“How?””
She looked at the photograph in his hand.
“Because I was there.””
The silence was immediate.
Daniel stepped forward.
“You were there the night Lily disappeared?””
Eleanor closed her eyes.
“I was.””
My heart started pounding.
“Then why didn’t you tell anyone?””
She looked at me.
And for a second, I saw something real in her expression.
Pain.
“I was afraid.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“Afraid?””
“Yes.””
“Your niece vanished. My parents spent years searching for her. My mother died believing she failed her daughter.””
Eleanor’s eyes filled with tears.
“I know.””
“Then why?””
She looked down.
“Because I knew who took her.””
Nobody moved.
The sentence hung in the air.
Daniel’s voice became quiet.
“Who?””
Eleanor looked at me.
“I can’t.””
Daniel slammed his hand against the desk.
“You can’t?””
His voice echoed.
“You let my sister grow up without her family because you were scared?””
Eleanor flinched.
“I was trying to protect her.””
“By abandoning her?””
“No.””
The word came out broken.
“I thought I was saving her.””
I stepped closer.
“Saving me from who?””
Eleanor looked at me.
And the fear returned.
“From someone who wanted you gone forever.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“Who?””
Eleanor opened her mouth.
But before she could answer, the lights in the office suddenly went out.
The room fell into darkness.
A second later, glass shattered somewhere in the hallway.
Marcus immediately moved.
“Everyone stay back.””
I heard footsteps.
Someone running.
Daniel grabbed my arm.
“Are you okay?””
“Yes.””
Marcus returned moments later.
His face was serious.
“They’re gone.””
“Who?”” Daniel demanded.
Marcus looked toward the broken window.
“Whoever was listening.””
My blood turned cold.
“Someone was listening?””
Marcus nodded.
“And they left this.””
He held up a small envelope.
Daniel took it.
Inside was a single photograph.
Not an old one.
A new one.
Taken that morning.
It showed me standing in the mansion garden.
The back of the photo had four words written in black ink.
*You should have stayed lost.*
Daniel crushed the photograph in his hand.
“This ends now.””
But Eleanor looked at the message and whispered something that made everyone freeze.
“It’s not Victoria.””
Daniel looked at her.
“What?””
Eleanor’s face lost all color.
“Victoria is dangerous.””
She swallowed.
“But she’s not the person who has been hiding Lily.””
A terrible silence followed.
“Then who is?”” I asked.
Eleanor looked directly at Daniel.
May you like
And finally said the name she had been afraid to speak for twenty-four years.
“Your father.””
