Chapter 4: The Proof Hidden in the Past
Daniel didn’t sleep that night.
Neither did I.
The mansion that had once looked beautiful now felt like it was filled with ghosts.
Every hallway carried a memory I didn’t have.
Every photograph showed a family I was supposed to know.
At sunrise, Daniel found me standing in front of a portrait.
A little girl smiled from the painting.
She wore a silver necklace.
My necklace.
“She looks like you,” Daniel said quietly.
I looked at him.
“She looks happy.””
“She was.””
I touched the frame.
“Then why did someone take her away?””
Daniel had no answer.
Because he was asking the same question.
Later that morning, Marcus arrived with a locked box.
“I found this hidden in the Sterling family archives.””
Daniel opened it.
Inside were letters.
Old photographs.
And one envelope with my name written on it.
Lily.
My hands shook.
“I don’t understand.””
Daniel looked at the envelope.
“Neither do I.””
I opened it slowly.
Inside was a single page.
A letter from my mother.
My eyes moved across the words.
*My sweet Lily, if you are reading this, it means someone finally found you.*
I covered my mouth.
The room blurred.
*Never trust anyone who tells you our family forgot you. We searched. We fought. But someone made sure we never reached you.*
Daniel read over my shoulder.
His face filled with pain.
The letter continued.
*The person responsible is someone close. Someone who smiles while destroying everything behind closed doors.*
A chill ran through me.
Daniel looked at Marcus.
“Find out who wrote this.””
Marcus nodded.
But before he could leave, his phone rang.
He answered.
Then his expression changed.
“What?””
Daniel stood.
“What happened?””
Marcus looked at him.
“Victoria was released.””
My stomach tightened.
“How?””
“Her lawyers argued she was framed.””
Daniel’s jaw clenched.
“That’s impossible.””
Marcus hesitated.
“There’s more.””
“What?””
“She gave the police evidence.””
Daniel frowned.
“Evidence of what?””
Marcus looked at me.
“Evidence that Lily’s disappearance was connected to your mother.””
The room went silent.
I felt the blood drain from my face.
“What does that mean?””
Nobody answered.
Then Daniel’s phone buzzed.
A message.
From Victoria.
He opened it.
His expression turned cold.
“What did she say?”” I asked.
Daniel looked at me.
Then read the message aloud.
“Ask your sister what happened the night your mother died.””
My heart stopped.
Daniel stared at the screen.
Another message appeared.
This time with a photograph attached.
It showed a young woman.
My mother.
Standing beside someone.
Someone I recognized.
Even after twenty-four years.
A face I had seen at the gala.
A face smiling beside Victoria.
Daniel zoomed in.
And whispered:
“No…”
I looked closer.
The person beside my mother was wearing the same family ring Victoria wore.
Daniel looked at me with fear in his eyes.
“Lily…”
My voice shook.
“Who is it?””
He slowly turned the phone toward me.
May you like
And the name beneath the photograph destroyed everything I thought I knew.
*Eleanor Sterling.*
