Chapter 9: The Shadow Before Vanessa

The name on the photograph sat between us like a loaded weapon.

I had spent months believing the nightmare was over.

James Whitmore was behind bars.

Vanessa was awaiting trial.

Claire was home.

Lily was laughing again.

For the first time in years, our house felt like a home instead of a crime scene.

And then one envelope had destroyed that peace in seconds.

Claire stared at the photograph with trembling hands.

“Who is he?””

I asked again.

She didn’t answer.

“Claire.””

She looked at me.

Her eyes were filled with a fear I had never seen before.

Not the fear of being trapped.

Not the fear of losing her family.

Something older.

Something deeper.

“His name is Adrian Vale.””

The name meant nothing to me.

But Claire looked like she had just seen a ghost.

“Vale?””

She nodded slowly.

“My uncle.””

I frowned.

“Your uncle?””

“Yes.””

I sat down.

“Why would your uncle be involved?””

Claire placed the photograph on the table.

“Because he was the reason my father lost everything.””

The room went silent.

I looked toward Lily’s bedroom.

She was asleep.

Safe.

At least I hoped she was.

“Tell me everything.””

Claire sat across from me.

For a moment, she looked like the woman I met years ago.

Strong.

Determined.

But exhausted from carrying too many secrets.

“My father had two brothers,” she said.

“Adrian and Michael.””

“Michael was my father.””

She touched the photograph.

“Adrian always believed my father stole his future.””

“How?””

“He thought the company should have belonged to him.””

I shook my head.

“So he destroyed his own family?””

Claire looked down.

“Some people don’t see family when money is involved.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Was he working with James?””

“Yes.””

I stood.

“Then why wasn’t he mentioned?””

“Because Adrian was careful.””

Claire took a deep breath.

“He never touched the paperwork. He never signed anything. He never appeared anywhere.””

“So he used people.””

She nodded.

“Exactly.””

I looked at the photograph again.

“Then why send this now?””

Claire didn’t answer immediately.

And that scared me.

“Claire?””

She whispered:

“Because he wants us to know he’s watching.””

My phone rang.

I jumped.

Unknown number.

Claire and I looked at each other.

Neither of us wanted to answer.

Finally, I picked up.

“Hello?””

A calm male voice spoke.

“Daniel Carter.””

My blood went cold.

“Who is this?””

“You already know.””

I looked at Claire.

The voice continued.

“You found the recording.””

I didn’t answer.

“You found the documents.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“And now you found my name.””

“Adrian Vale?””

A pause.

Then a quiet laugh.

“So Claire did remember me.””

Claire stood immediately.

“Put it on speaker.””

I did.

Adrian continued.

“Hello, Claire.””

Her face hardened.

“Where are you?””

“Still the same person.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“No.””

His voice remained calm.

“That’s why you were always difficult.””

I stepped closer to Claire.

“What do you want?””

Adrian ignored me.

“Claire, you were supposed to stay quiet.””

She laughed bitterly.

“You trapped me for five years.””

“No.””

His voice became colder.

“You survived because I allowed it.””

My stomach turned.

“What did you say?””

Claire grabbed my hand.

“Daniel…”

Adrian continued.

“Vanessa was emotional. James was greedy. They were both predictable.””

“You controlled them.””

“I guided them.””

I felt anger rise.

“You ruined my family.””

“No.””

Adrian replied.

“Your family was already broken.””

The call went silent.

Then he said:

“You want to know the truth about your father?””

I didn’t respond.

“You still think he was protecting everyone.””

Claire’s expression changed.

“What are you talking about?””

Adrian laughed softly.

“Ask Daniel why his father never told him about his real inheritance.””

I froze.

“My father’s inheritance?””

Claire looked confused.

“What?””

Adrian continued.

“The trust wasn’t the only thing he left behind.””

I stepped forward.

“Where are you?””

“I’m giving you a chance.””

“A chance?””

“Yes.””

His voice lowered.

“To stop digging.””

I laughed.

“You think I’m going to stop?””

“I think you don’t understand what you’re digging into.””

The line crackled.

Then:

“Your father wasn’t just protecting you from me.””

A pause.

“He was protecting you from yourself.””

The call ended.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then Claire whispered:

“He knows.””

“Knows what?””

She looked at me.

“The secret your father kept from you.””

I felt a knot form in my chest.

“What secret?””

Before she could answer, the lights in the house flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then went out.

I immediately moved toward Lily’s room.

“Daniel.””

Claire followed.

The hallway was dark.

And then we heard it.

Three slow knocks.

My entire body froze.

Not because of the sound.

Because I knew where it came from.

The front door.

I grabbed a flashlight.

“Stay behind me.””

I opened the door.

Nobody was there.

Only a small package sitting on the porch.

No name.

No address.

Inside was an old key.

And a handwritten note.

I unfolded it.

Three words.

*Your father’s vault.*

Claire looked at it.

Then whispered:

“Oh no.””

I turned.

“What?””

Her face had gone pale.

“Daniel…”

May you like

She pointed at the key.

“That belonged to your father.””
