Chapter 4: The Person Behind Vanessa
I didn’t sleep that night.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Lily standing at that door.
I saw Claire on the floor.
I saw Vanessa’s face when she realized her secret was exposed.
But one question kept repeating.
How many people knew?
The next morning, I met the caller in an abandoned office building downtown.
I brought the detective.
I brought evidence.
But mostly, I brought anger.
The man waiting for us looked exhausted.
His name was Richard Hayes.
My former lawyer.
The person I thought had helped me find my wife.
Instead, he had helped hide her.
“You have a lot of nerve calling me,” I said.
Richard looked down.
“I know.””
“You lied to me for five years.””
“I did.””
The honesty made me angrier.
“Why?””
He looked at the floor.
“Because Vanessa threatened my family.””
The detective crossed his arms.
“Explain.””
Richard took a deep breath.
“She found out I had made mistakes with your company accounts.””
I stared.
“What mistakes?””
“She used them against me.””
“So you helped her.””
He nodded.
“Yes.””
The word felt disgusting.
“You told me my wife abandoned us.””
Richard closed his eyes.
“She wanted you to believe that.””
“Why?””
“Because Vanessa needed you to hate Claire.””
I laughed bitterly.
“She built an entire life on a lie.””
Richard looked at me.
“No.””
He said quietly.
“She built it on several lies.””
He opened a folder.
Inside were photographs.
Vanessa.
My house.
My office.
Claire.
All taken before I met her.
“She was watching you.””
My stomach turned.
“Why me?””
Richard looked at the final photograph.
A photograph of my father.
I stared.
“What does my father have to do with this?””
Richard hesitated.
“Vanessa wasn’t after you.””
I looked confused.
“She was after what your father left behind.””
“My father died ten years ago.””
“Yes.””
Richard slid another document toward me.
“Before he died, your father created a trust.””
I read the papers.
A trust I had never heard about.
A trust worth millions.
But there was one condition.
My wife had to approve any transfer.
I looked up.
“Claire.””
Richard nodded.
“Vanessa couldn’t access it unless Claire was gone.””
My blood ran cold.
“She didn’t want to marry me.””
“No.””
Richard looked at me.
“She wanted to replace Claire.””
The room felt silent.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
From Vanessa.
I opened it.
One sentence.
I knew she was dangerous.
But I didn’t know how desperate she had become.
The message read:
*Bring Lily to the old house if you want Claire to stay alive.*
My heart stopped.
The detective saw my face.
“What happened?””
I handed him the phone.
Richard stood immediately.
“She has someone helping her.””
“Who?””
Richard looked terrified.
“The person who started all of this.””
I stared.
“Who?””
He whispered the name.
And I felt the world shift beneath me.
“Your father’s business partner.””
I looked back at the message.
Vanessa wasn’t running.
May you like
She was planning something.
And she had just taken my daughter.
