Chapter 3: The Secret Lily Carried

The police arrived forty minutes later.

The engagement party was gone.

The decorations were still hanging.

The cake still sat untouched.

But nobody was celebrating.

My entire life had become a room full of strangers watching my family fall apart.

Claire was taken to the hospital.

Not because she wanted to leave.

Because after five years locked away, her body couldn’t handle everything at once.

I sat beside Lily in the hospital waiting room.

She was holding a stuffed rabbit.

The same rabbit Claire gave her before she disappeared.

“Daddy?””

I looked at her.

“Yeah?””

“Are you mad at me?””

My heart shattered.

“No.””

“But I ruined your party.””

I pulled her close.

“Lily, you saved your mother.””

She looked down.

“I was scared.””

“I know.””

“I thought Vanessa would hurt Mommy.””

The hallway suddenly felt colder.

“What made you think that?””

Lily hesitated.

“She told me not to go near the door.””

“When?””

“A few months ago.””

I sat up.

“What?””

Lily looked embarrassed.

“I heard knocking.””

My blood ran cold.

“From the room?””

She nodded.

“I thought it was a ghost.””

My hands tightened.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because Vanessa said Mommy was gone because she didn’t love us.””

Tears filled Lily’s eyes.

“She said if I kept asking questions, you would leave me too.””

I closed my eyes.

The woman I trusted had used my daughter’s biggest fear against her.

A nurse walked out.

“Mr. Carter?””

I stood immediately.

“How is my wife?””

“She’s stable.””

The word wife still felt strange.

Like something I had been denied.

“Can I see her?””

The nurse nodded.

Inside the room, Claire looked smaller than I remembered.

But her eyes were the same.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered.

I sat beside her.

“Why?””

“For leaving you.””

I looked away.

“You didn’t.””

She swallowed.

“I should have fought harder.””

“You were trapped.””

“But before that…”

She looked at the window.

“Before Vanessa took me, I discovered something.””

“What?””

“She wasn’t just stealing money.””

I waited.

“She was collecting information.””

“What kind?””

“About you.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why?””

Claire looked at me.

“Because Vanessa didn’t meet you by accident.””

The room went silent.

“What are you saying?””

Claire’s voice trembled.

“She knew who you were before you knew her.””

I remembered our first meeting.

A coffee shop.

A spilled drink.

A perfect coincidence.

Except maybe it wasn’t.

“Why would she do that?””

Claire looked toward the door.

“Because she wanted everything I had.””

A knock interrupted us.

A detective entered.

“Mr. Carter?””

“Yes?””

He held a folder.

“We found something in the house.””

“What?””

He opened it.

“Documents hidden behind the old fireplace.””

I frowned.

“What kind of documents?””

He looked uncomfortable.

“Property transfers.””

I stared.

“Property?””

He nodded.

“Your house. Your company shares. Your insurance policies.””

My chest tightened.

“Who signed them?””

The detective looked at the paper.

“Vanessa.””

A wave of anger moved through me.

“She forged my signature?””

“Possibly.””

Claire looked terrified.

“There’s more.””

The detective turned another page.

“We also found records showing payments to someone.””

“Who?””

He hesitated.

Then said:

“Your former lawyer.””

I froze.

My former lawyer had handled the investigation after Claire disappeared.

The same man who told me there was no evidence.

The same man who convinced me to stop searching.

“What was his name?””

The detective looked down.

“Richard Hayes.””

Claire’s face changed.

She whispered:

“He helped her.””

I stood.

“How do you know?””

Claire looked at me with tears in her eyes.

“Because he was there the night Vanessa locked the door.””

Before I could answer, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

Then I saw Claire staring at the screen.

“Answer it.””

I picked up.

A man’s voice spoke.

“Daniel Carter?””

“Yes.””

“You found your wife.””

My grip tightened.

“Who is this?””

A pause.

Then:

“The man who can prove Vanessa wasn’t acting alone.””

I looked at Claire.

“Where are you?””

The man whispered.

May you like

“Somewhere Vanessa thought I’d never escape.””

Then the line went dead.
