Chapter 7: The Man Who Never Left

The hallway was empty.

But everyone stared into it.

Waiting.

Like the house itself was holding its breath.

I pulled Lily behind me.

“Who is he?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

She looked defeated.

For the first time since I met her, she looked small.

Not dangerous.

Not powerful.

Just someone who realized she had been used.

Claire stepped forward.

“Daniel, we need to leave.””

But before we could move, the lights went out.

The entire house fell into darkness.

Lily grabbed my hand.

“Daddy.””

“I’m here.””

A sound came from the hallway.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Confident.

Someone who wasn’t afraid.

A match struck.

A small flame appeared.

Then a man stepped into the light.

He was older.

Gray hair.

Expensive suit.

And I knew him.

Because I had seen him at my father’s funeral.

“Mr. Carter.””

My blood froze.

“James Whitmore.””

The man smiled.

“I’m glad you remember me.””

I stared.

My father’s business partner.

The man who had comforted me after my father died.

The man who told me he would always protect our family.

“You knew.””

He tilted his head.

“Knew what?””

“Everything.””

James sighed.

“You sound just like your father.””

My fists tightened.

“Don’t mention him.””

“Why?””

He smiled.

“Because you still believe he was a good man.””

Claire stepped beside me.

“He was.””

James looked at her.

“You always were stubborn.””

“You destroyed my family.””

James laughed softly.

“No, Claire.””

He walked deeper into the room.

“Your family destroyed itself.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You said you would help me.””

James glanced at her.

“And I did.””

Her face changed.

“You used me.””

“Everyone uses everyone.””

The cruelty in his voice made Lily hide behind me.

I looked at him.

“What do you want?””

James looked around.

“The trust.””

I almost laughed.

“That’s it?””

“That’s everything.””

He stepped closer.

“Your father built an empire and hid the key from me.””

“What key?””

James smiled.

“The approval of the person he trusted most.””

He looked at Claire.

“Your wife.””

Claire went pale.

“You needed me gone.””

“Exactly.””

I felt sick.

“So you convinced Vanessa to do your dirty work.””

James shrugged.

“She was angry. Grieving. Easy to guide.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You told me the Carter family ruined mine.””

“I told you what you needed to hear.””

Her face collapsed.

The realization finally arrived.

She wasn’t the mastermind.

She was another victim.

A dangerous one.

But still a victim.

James pulled out a gun.

Everything stopped.

“Now,” he said calmly, “we’re going to end this.””

I moved in front of Lily.

Claire grabbed my arm.

“Daniel.””

James smiled.

“Always protecting them.””

Then he looked at Vanessa.

“Your turn.””

Vanessa stared.

“What?””

“You know where the final document is.””

Her eyes widened.

“No.””

James’s expression changed.

“Don’t make me regret helping you.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“What document?””

She didn’t answer.

James did.

“The one proving Claire’s father was innocent.””

My heart stopped.

“The one that can destroy my company.””

He smiled.

“And the one hidden somewhere only Vanessa knows.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked terrified.

“Where is it?””

She whispered:

“I never found it.””

James raised the gun slightly.

“Then you have no reason to live.””

Lily screamed.

I moved.

But before anyone could react, Vanessa stepped forward.

“Wait.””

Everyone froze.

She looked at me.

May you like

For the first time, there was no lie in her eyes.

“I know where it is.””
