Chapter 2: What Was Behind the Door

The door opened slowly.

The hinges groaned like they hadn’t moved in years.

Everyone expected darkness.

What they didn’t expect was a person.

A woman collapsed on the floor.

Thin.

Weak.

Her hair tangled around her face.

But I knew her.

Even after five years.

Even after all the nights I convinced myself she was gone.

“Claire…”

The name escaped my mouth like a broken prayer.

Lily screamed.

“Mommy!””

She ran forward.

I barely had time to catch her before she reached the woman.

Claire looked up.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Lily?””

That was all it took.

My daughter fell into her mother’s arms.

The ballroom disappeared.

The music stopped.

The guests stopped whispering.

There was only my daughter crying against the woman I thought I had lost forever.

Vanessa stood behind me.

Silent.

Watching.

I turned around slowly.

“What did you do?””

Her lips parted.

“Daniel, I can explain.””

“No.””

My voice surprised even me.

“No, you don’t get to say that.””

I pointed toward Claire.

“My wife has been locked in a room in this house.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“It wasn’t like that.””

Claire looked up.

Her voice was barely strong enough to hear.

“Don’t believe her.””

Vanessa flinched.

“Claire, you’re confused.””

Claire laughed weakly.

A painful sound.

“You always did like pretending you were the victim.””

Several guests backed away.

Nobody knew where to look.

I knelt beside Claire.

“Tell me what happened.””

Her hand grabbed mine.

Her fingers were cold.

“I tried to come back.””

The words hit me harder than I expected.

“What?””

She swallowed.

“Five years ago, I found out Vanessa was stealing from my company.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She immediately shook her head.

“That’s insane.””

Claire continued.

“She knew I was going to report her.””

“Daniel, she’s lying,” Vanessa snapped.

But her voice was different now.

Desperate.

Claire looked at me.

“She came to me before I could expose her.””

My stomach twisted.

“What did she do?””

Claire closed her eyes.

“I woke up here.””

I stared at the room behind the door.

The room was small.

A bed.

A chair.

A water container.

A shelf of old books.

My wife had been living inside that room.

For five years.

Five years.

I felt something inside me break.

“Who knew?”” I whispered.

Claire looked at Vanessa.

“Nobody.””

Vanessa took a step back.

“You’re ruining everything.””

The sentence was quiet.

But everyone heard it.

I turned.

“Everything?””

She realized her mistake.

“I mean—”

“No.””

I stood.

“You said ruining everything.””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with anger.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

She looked around at the guests.

Then at Lily.

Then at me.

“You were moving on.””

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“You locked my wife away because I moved on?””

“No!””

Her voice cracked.

“I loved you.””

Claire stared at her.

“You loved the life you could steal.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

The mask finally slipped.

“You think she’s innocent?””

Nobody spoke.

Vanessa pointed at Claire.

“She left you before.””

My jaw tightened.

“No.””

“Yes,” Vanessa said.

“She was planning to leave. She told me herself.””

Claire looked confused.

“That’s a lie.””

Vanessa smiled bitterly.

“Is it?””

She reached into her purse.

This time, I noticed everyone saw it.

She pulled out a folded piece of paper.

“Ask her about this.””

She threw it onto the floor.

I picked it up.

My hands shook.

It was a letter.

A letter written by Claire.

My eyes moved across the first line.

Daniel,

I can’t stay in this marriage anymore.

I stopped breathing.

Claire looked at me.

“No.””

I looked at her.

“Did you write this?””

Her face changed.

Pain.

Fear.

Recognition.

“I wrote those words.””

The room went silent.

“But not for the reason she wants you to believe.””

I looked at Vanessa.

Then back at Claire.

“What does that mean?””

Claire reached for the letter.

“She stole it before I finished.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

Claire’s voice dropped.

“I was writing that letter to protect you.””

A chill moved through me.

“Protect me from what?””

Claire looked directly at Vanessa.

“From the person you almost married.””

Vanessa suddenly turned toward the exit.

A guest blocked her path.

“Where are you going?””

She smiled nervously.

“I need air.””

But before she could move, Claire spoke.

“Daniel.””

I looked back.

Her eyes were full of fear.

“There’s something else you need to know.””

“What?””

Claire’s hand tightened around mine.

“Vanessa didn’t just lock me away.””

She glanced toward Lily.

“She knew Lily saw.””

My daughter froze.

I looked at Lily.

“What did you see?””

Lily started crying.

And her answer changed everything.

“Daddy…”

She pointed at Vanessa.

“She told me if I ever told you, Mommy would disappear forever.””

Vanessa’s face went blank.

May you like

Then she whispered something I never expected.

“Your daughter was never supposed to find that key.””
