Chapter 9: The Bloodline Secret
For the first time in his life, Vittorio Moretti didn’t know who he was.
Not as a businessman.
Not as a father.
Not as a son.
Not even as a brother.
He stood in the middle of the security room, staring at Antonio.
The man who had shared every childhood memory with him.
The man who had protected him.
The man who had betrayed him.
Or maybe…
the man who had been protecting him from a truth too painful to understand.
“Say something,” Vittorio whispered.
Antonio didn’t move.
“Vittorio…”
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“Don’t say my name like you’re still my brother.””
Antonio looked down.
“I never wanted you to find out this way.””
“Then how did you want me to find out?””
Silence.
“That I wasn’t your brother?””
Antonio closed his eyes.
“That’s not true.””
Vittorio stared at him.
“Then explain.””
Antonio looked at the documents on the table.
“The blood tests.””
Vittorio froze.
“What?””
Antonio reached into the folder and pulled out a sealed envelope.
“I found these years ago.””
His hands shook slightly.
“Your father ordered a test after you were born.””
Vittorio opened the envelope.
The paper inside was old.
The words were clear.
Paternity test.
Not a match.
He felt like the room was spinning.
“No.””
Antonio’s voice was quiet.
“Your father knew.””
“My entire life…”
Vittorio couldn’t finish.
Antonio nodded.
“He knew.””
“And my mother?””
“She knew too.””
Vittorio looked at him.
“Who was he?””
Antonio hesitated.
That hesitation was unbearable.
“Tell me.””
Antonio looked toward the window.
“His name was Lorenzo Ferrara.””
The name hit like a physical blow.
Daniel Ferrara’s family.
The lawyer.
The man behind Bianca.
The man connected to everything.
Vittorio’s face went pale.
“No.””
Antonio nodded.
“Your father’s greatest enemy was your real father.””
The pieces began falling into place.
The hidden sister.
The stolen money.
Elena’s investigation.
Bianca’s plan.
Daniel’s obsession.
It wasn’t random.
It was revenge.
A revenge that had been planned for decades.
“Why would my mother stay?””
Antonio looked sad.
“Because she loved you.””
Vittorio laughed bitterly.
“Love?””
He pointed at the papers.
“She built my entire life on a lie.””
“She was afraid.””
“Of what?””
Antonio looked at him.
“Losing you.””
That answer hurt because part of him understood it.
But understanding wasn’t forgiveness.
Not yet.
The security alarm suddenly sounded.
Everyone turned.
Emma looked at the monitor.
“There’s someone at the front gate.””
Vittorio walked toward the screen.
His heart stopped.
Bianca.
She stood outside.
But she wasn’t alone.
Lucy was with her.
Vittorio didn’t wait.
He ran.
The front doors opened before he reached them.
“Lucy!””
The little girl ran into his arms.
“Daddy!””
He held her so tightly she laughed softly.
For a moment, everything else disappeared.
She was safe.
She was alive.
That was all that mattered.
Then he looked up.
Isabella stood behind Bianca.
And beside her…
was Daniel.
Vittorio’s expression changed.
“You.””
Daniel looked exhausted.
Not powerful.
Not confident.
Just tired.
“I know what you think.””
“I don’t care what I think.””
Vittorio stepped forward.
“I care about why you used my daughter.””
Daniel looked at Lucy.
“I never wanted her hurt.””
“Everyone says that.””
The words cut deeper than shouting.
Daniel lowered his eyes.
“You’re right.””
Bianca suddenly laughed.
A bitter laugh.
“You all act like victims.””
Vittorio looked at her.
“You’re still pretending?””
She looked around.
“At the end of the day, I was the only person willing to do what was necessary.””
“Necessary?””
Bianca stepped closer.
“Do you know what your family did?””
Vittorio said nothing.
“They destroyed people and called it business.””
Isabella spoke quietly.
“She’s right about one thing.””
Everyone looked at her.
“The Moretti family buried a lot of pain.””
Vittorio looked at Isabella.
“But Lucy didn’t.””
Isabella’s expression softened.
“No.””
“She was innocent.””
“Yes.””
“Then why involve her?””
Isabella looked down.
“Because I needed you to listen.””
Vittorio shook his head.
“You could have come to me.””
“No.””
Her eyes filled with sadness.
“Because I did.””
Vittorio froze.
“What?””
Isabella stepped closer.
“Five years ago.””
The world went silent.
“I wrote letters. I called. I tried.””
Vittorio frowned.
“I never received anything.””
“I know.””
A cold feeling entered his chest.
“Who stopped them?””
Isabella looked at Antonio.
Then Daniel.
Nobody spoke.
And that was the answer.
The people around him had been controlling the truth for years.
Not one betrayal.
Many.
Layer after layer.
Suddenly, Lucy tugged his sleeve.
“Daddy.””
He looked down.
“What is it?””
She pointed toward Bianca.
“She said something before.””
Vittorio looked at Bianca.
“What?””
Lucy hesitated.
Then whispered:
“She said Mommy didn’t die because of a car.””
Nobody moved.
Vittorio’s entire body went still.
“Lucy…”
“She said Mommy found out about someone.””
“Who?””
Lucy looked scared.
“She said the person was in our family.””
The front gate opened behind them.
A car stopped outside.
Everyone turned.
An elderly man stepped out.
Vittorio recognized him instantly.
His father’s old driver.
A man everyone believed had disappeared.
He walked forward carrying a small box.
“I’m sorry, Vittorio.””
Vittorio stared.
“For what?””
The old man looked at the box.
“For keeping your father’s final secret.””
He opened it.
Inside was a recording device.
A note attached.
*Play this when the truth becomes impossible to hide.*
The old driver pressed the button.
And Vittorio heard his father’s voice.
“Vittorio… if you are hearing this, then I failed to protect you.””
A pause.
Then the voice continued.
“The person who destroyed our family was never my enemy.””
Vittorio held his breath.
His father’s final words came through the speaker.
“It was someone I married.””
Everyone looked at Vittorio’s mother’s photograph hanging in the hallway.
