Chapter 4: The Name on the Papers

Vittorio had spent his entire life believing betrayal came from strangers.

Competitors.

Enemies.

People outside the walls of his home.

He never imagined it would come from inside his own family.

The documents sat on his desk.

Each signature.

Each approval.

Each transaction.

A trail leading back to one person.

Antonio Moretti.

His older brother.

The man who taught him how to ride a bicycle.

The man who stood beside him when their father died.

The man who told him:

“Family is the only thing money can’t buy.””

Now Vittorio stared at the proof that family had been the one thing trying to destroy him.

Emma entered quietly.

“Did you find something?””

He didn’t answer.

She looked at the papers.

“Oh my God.””

Marcus appeared behind her.

“I need to explain.””

Vittorio turned.

“You knew.””

Marcus stopped.

“I…”

“You knew Antonio was involved.””

Marcus looked down.

“I suspected.””

Vittorio laughed bitterly.

“Everyone suspects. Everyone sees. Nobody speaks.””

Marcus swallowed.

“He said he was protecting the family.””

“By stealing from me?””

“By taking control before Bianca ruined everything.””

Vittorio stood.

“Do you hear yourself?””

Marcus had no answer.

Lucy watched from the hallway.

She had learned to recognize raised voices.

She started stepping backward.

Vittorio saw her.

Immediately, his anger disappeared.

“Lucy.””

She froze.

“Come here.””

She slowly walked toward him.

He knelt.

“Are you okay?””

She nodded.

But she wasn’t.

He knew.

Because children didn’t become quiet without a reason.

That night, Vittorio made a decision.

He would not just expose Bianca.

He would expose everyone who helped her.

The next morning, he arranged a meeting.

Antonio arrived first.

Confident.

Calm.

Almost amused.

“You look tired.””

Vittorio sat across from him.

“I found the accounts.””

Antonio’s expression changed slightly.

Only slightly.

“What accounts?””

“The ones you moved.””

A long silence.

Then Antonio sighed.

“I hoped you would never find out.””

Vittorio stared.

“You’re admitting it?””

Antonio looked at the window.

“You were always too emotional.””

“Emotional?””

“You built a company because you wanted to prove something. You saved everyone. You protected everyone.””

Antonio leaned forward.

“But you forgot one thing.””

“What?””

“Power doesn’t belong to the kindest person.””

Vittorio felt disgust rise in his chest.

“You worked with Bianca.””

“Yes.””

“Against me.””

“For the family.””

Vittorio stood.

“No. For yourself.””

Antonio’s face hardened.

“You don’t understand what I sacrificed.””

“You sacrificed my daughter’s safety.””

Antonio looked confused.

“Lucy?””

“You knew what Bianca was doing.””

A pause.

Then Antonio looked away.

That was enough.

Vittorio’s voice dropped.

“You knew.””

Antonio said nothing.

The door behind them suddenly opened.

Lucy stood there.

She was holding a small notebook.

“Daddy?””

Vittorio immediately walked toward her.

“What happened?””

She looked at Antonio.

“I wrote something.””

Her small hand shook as she opened the notebook.

Inside were pages of drawings.

Pictures of a little girl sitting alone.

Pictures of Bianca yelling.

Pictures of a man standing outside a door.

Vittorio looked closer.

The man in the drawing was Antonio.

His face went pale.

Antonio whispered:

“No.””

Lucy looked up.

“You told Bianca I wasn’t important.””

The room went silent.

Antonio stepped back.

“I never said that.””

Lucy pointed at the drawing.

“You said Daddy cared too much about me.””

Vittorio looked at his brother.

And for the first time in decades…

he saw a stranger.

Antonio reached for the notebook.

Vittorio moved between them.

“Don’t.””

Antonio stopped.

Then his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

He answered.

“Hello?””

A voice spoke from the other end.

Nobody could hear the words.

But Antonio’s face lost all color.

When he hung up, he looked at Vittorio.

“It’s too late.””

Vittorio stared.

“For what?””

Antonio slowly placed the phone on the table.

“Because Bianca wasn’t the person controlling this plan.””

A cold silence filled the room.

May you like

“Someone else was.””

And then Antonio said the one name Vittorio never expected to hear.
