Chapter 10: The Last Truth
The recording played again.
No one spoke.
Nobody moved.
The voice of Vittorio’s father filled the mansion.
A voice from the past.
A voice carrying a confession that had waited years to be heard.
“Your mother believed she was protecting you.””
A pause.
“But she was protecting herself.””
Vittorio stared at the speaker.
His entire life had been built around one belief.
His mother loved him.
His father loved him.
His family was complicated.
But real.
Now he realized the truth was more painful.
Some people could love you.
And still destroy you.
The recording continued.
“She discovered Lorenzo’s existence after Vittorio was born. She knew the child she raised was not my blood.””
Antonio looked down.
“She also knew Isabella existed.””
Vittorio looked at Isabella.
His sister.
A stranger.
A family member.
Both at the same time.
“She feared losing everything,” the recording said.
“So she made a choice.””
The audio crackled.
“She removed every person who could expose her.””
Vittorio’s hands tightened.
“Elena.””
Isabella nodded.
“She was the first.””
The room went silent.
Daniel stepped forward.
“I tried to stop it.””
Vittorio looked at him.
“You helped hide it.””
Daniel accepted the accusation.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Daniel looked broken.
“Because my father was Lorenzo Ferrara.””
Everything connected.
Daniel’s revenge.
His family’s pain.
The Moretti secrets.
“My father spent his life believing yours stole everything from him.””
Vittorio looked at Isabella.
“And you?””
She looked away.
“I spent my life believing the same thing.””
“But you took Lucy.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Her eyes filled.
“Because when I saw her, I saw myself.””
Nobody spoke.
“I was a child too,” Isabella continued.
“I was hidden. Forgotten. Treated like a mistake.””
She looked at Lucy.
“I couldn’t let another child become me.””
Vittorio looked at Lucy.
The little girl who had suffered because adults were fighting battles that started before she was born.
Then he looked at Bianca.
The woman who had hurt his daughter.
“You knew all of this.””
Bianca’s face hardened.
“I knew enough.””
“You used Lucy.””
“I used what mattered to you.””
Vittorio walked toward her.
“No.””
His voice was calm.
“That’s where you were wrong.””
Bianca frowned.
“What?””
“You thought Lucy was my weakness.””
He looked back at his daughter.
“She was the reason I survived.””
For the first time, Bianca had no response.
The police arrived an hour later.
Not because Vittorio called them.
Because Emma had already sent every recording.
Every video.
Every document.
Every piece of evidence.
There would be trials.
There would be consequences.
Bianca.
Antonio.
Daniel.
Everyone who had chosen silence.
But before they took Antonio away, Vittorio stopped him.
His brother looked surprised.
“You hate me.””
Vittorio was silent.
“Yes.””
Antonio nodded.
“I understand.””
“But I also know something.””
Antonio looked up.
“What?””
“You saved Lucy.””
A tear appeared in Antonio’s eyes.
“Too late.””
“Yes.””
Vittorio looked at him.
“But you still did.””
It wasn’t forgiveness.
Not yet.
Maybe not ever.
But it was honesty.
And after a lifetime of lies…
honesty mattered.
Months passed.
The Moretti mansion changed.
The cold rooms became warmer.
The dining table where Lucy had once been humiliated became the place where she laughed the loudest.
Vittorio removed the expensive decorations.
The things that made the house look perfect.
He replaced them with things that made it feel alive.
Drawings.
Photos.
Memories.
One evening, Lucy sat beside him in the garden.
“Daddy?””
“Yes?””
“Am I still a real person?””
Vittorio looked at her.
The question broke his heart because he remembered when she first asked.
But this time, his answer was different.
“You were always a real person.””
Lucy smiled.
“You promise?””
“I promise.””
She leaned against him.
A few minutes later, Isabella joined them.
Still unfamiliar.
Still carrying years of pain.
But slowly becoming family.
“I found something,” she said.
Vittorio looked up.
“What?””
She handed him an envelope.
His father’s handwriting.
Another letter.
He stared at it.
“Another secret?””
Isabella smiled sadly.
“No.””
She looked at Lucy.
“A truth.””
Vittorio opened it.
Inside was one final sentence.
A sentence his father had written years ago.
*The greatest inheritance I can leave my son is not my company. It is the chance to break the cycle I created.*
Vittorio closed the letter.
For years, his family had been built on secrets.
On fear.
On power.
But Lucy had taught him something no business empire ever could.
A family wasn’t created by blood.
It was created by the people who chose to protect each other.

And for the first time in his life…
Vittorio Moretti finally felt free.
