Chapter 7: The Truth Beneath the Lies
The search for Lucy began before sunrise.
Vittorio had every security camera in the city checked.
Every road monitored.
Every contact questioned.
But there was one thing he couldn’t understand.
How had someone entered his home?
How had they taken his daughter without anyone stopping them?
The answer came quickly.
The security system had been disabled from inside.
Someone with access.
Someone trusted.
Again.
Vittorio stood in the security room watching footage frame by frame.
Emma stood beside him.
“I’m sorry.””
He didn’t look away.
“Don’t apologize.””
“I should have protected her.””
Vittorio finally turned.
“You did.””
Emma shook her head.
“I recorded those videos because I was scared. I waited too long.””
“You gave me the truth when I needed it.””
She wiped her eyes.
“But Lucy still isn’t here.””
That sentence hurt because it was true.
The only thing that mattered was missing.
A phone rang.
Everyone froze.
Unknown number.
Vittorio answered immediately.
“Where is my daughter?””
A woman’s voice replied.
“You sound just like your father.””
Vittorio’s face changed.
“Who is this?””
A pause.
Then:
“Someone your family erased.””
He stood straighter.
“Isabella?””
Silence.
Then a quiet laugh.
“So Daniel told you.””
“Where is Lucy?””
“She’s safe.””
“If you hurt her—”
“You still think this is about hurting people.””
The woman sounded tired.
“It’s about the truth.””
Vittorio gripped the phone.
“You took my daughter.””
“I protected her.””
“You kidnapped her.””
“No.””
Her voice sharpened.
“I saved her from the people who have been lying to her.””
Vittorio looked at Lucy’s drawings.
“What do you want?””
“I want you to read your father’s letter.””
“I already did.””
“No.””
The woman corrected him.
“You opened the envelope.””
A pause.
“But you didn’t read everything.””
Vittorio looked at the envelope.
His eyes narrowed.
“What does that mean?””
“It means your father wrote two letters.””
The call ended.
Vittorio immediately opened the envelope again.
Behind the photograph was another folded paper.
Hidden.
His hands trembled slightly as he opened it.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
My son Vittorio,
If you are reading this, then the truth has finally reached you.
I failed my first child.
I failed your mother.
And I failed you by teaching you that power mattered more than honesty.
Vittorio stopped.
His father’s words felt impossible.
The letter continued.
Isabella was born before you. Her mother left because of my choices. I spent years trying to repair what I destroyed.
But the greatest mistake I made was believing money could fix pain.
Vittorio kept reading.
Then he reached the sentence that changed everything.
Isabella’s mother was not the only person I hurt.
Your wife, Elena, discovered the truth before her death.
She was going to expose everything.
Vittorio’s fingers went cold.
Elena.
His wife.
Lucy’s mother.
The woman he had lost.
The woman everyone said died in an accident.
No.
He looked at Daniel.
“You knew.””
Daniel looked away.
Vittorio’s voice shook.
“You knew Elena was investigating.””
Daniel said nothing.
“Did you know how she died?””
Silence.
Then Daniel whispered:
“Yes.””
The room exploded with anger.
Vittorio grabbed him.
“You knew?””
Daniel didn’t fight.
“I was trying to stop it.””
“Stop what?””
“The truth.””
Vittorio pushed him away.
“You’re no different from Bianca.””
Daniel looked broken.
“No.””
He shook his head.
“I’m worse.””
The phone rang again.
This time, it was a video call.
Vittorio answered.
Lucy appeared on the screen.
She was sitting beside a woman.
Isabella.
Lucy looked scared.
But unharmed.
“Daddy.””
Vittorio almost broke.
“Lucy.””
“I’m okay.””
He stared at Isabella.
“Let her go.””
Isabella looked at him.
“I will.””
“When?””
“When you understand why your wife really died.””
Vittorio’s heart stopped.
“What are you saying?””
Isabella looked at Lucy.
Then back at him.
“Elena didn’t die in an accident.””
A pause.
“She was murdered.””
Vittorio felt the room disappear.
“By who?””
Isabella’s eyes filled with anger.
“The person you trusted most.””
The screen flickered.

Before the call ended, Isabella said one final sentence.
“The person who raised you.””
