Chapter 1: The Doorway Witness

The sound of a child crying should never come from a place called home.

Vittorio Moretti had heard Lucy cry before—after scraped knees, nightmares, and the first day she went to school without her mother. But this sound was different. It was small.

Broken. Like a little voice that had already learned nobody was coming to save it.

He stopped in the hallway, his hand still wrapped around the brass handle of the front door.

For three seconds, he thought he had walked into the wrong house.

Then he heard Bianca.

“If you want to eat, then get down and eat like a dog.””

The words cut through the elegant dining room like a blade.

Vittorio’s blood went cold.

The Moretti mansion had always been a symbol of perfection. Italian marble floors. Crystal chandeliers.

Family portraits covering the walls. Every room designed to make visitors believe the people inside lived without problems.

But behind the closed doors of that dining room was something no amount of money could hide.

Lucy, his six-year-old daughter, was on her knees.

A metal bowl sat on the cold tile floor.

Not a plate.

Not a child’s bowl.

A bowl used for leftovers.

Her tiny hands shook as she stared down at the scraps inside.

“Bianca…” Lucy whispered.

“I’m not hungry anymore.””

Bianca Laurent stood above her, wearing a designer dress that probably cost more than most people’s monthly salary. She crossed her arms and looked down at the little girl with disgust.

“You always do this,” Bianca said.

“You always pretend you’re too weak. Too sad. Too scared.””

Lucy’s eyes filled with tears.

“I didn’t do anything.””

Bianca laughed softly.

“That’s exactly your problem.””

Vittorio couldn’t move.

He had trusted Bianca.

That was the part that hurt the most.

After Lucy’s mother died two years earlier, everyone told him to wait before bringing someone new into their lives. But Bianca had seemed patient. Gentle.

She brought Lucy gifts. She read bedtime stories. She told Vittorio she wanted to become the mother Lucy deserved.

He believed her.

He had been a billionaire who could see through business deals worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

But he couldn’t see the cruelty happening ten feet away.

Until now.

Vittorio stepped into the doorway.

“Bianca.””

The room froze.

Bianca turned around.

For the first time, her confident expression disappeared.

“Vittorio?””

Lucy looked up.

Her face changed instantly.

“Daddy…”

That one word almost destroyed him.

He crossed the room without thinking.

Bianca took a step back.

“Wait, I can explain.””

Vittorio ignored her.

He dropped to his knees and pulled Lucy into his arms.

She grabbed his shirt so tightly her fingers turned white.

“Daddy…” she whispered against his chest.

“Am I a real person?””

The question broke something inside him.

Vittorio closed his eyes.

“What did you say?””

Lucy trembled.

“Bianca says I’m just something you brought home because you felt sorry for me.””

Bianca’s face tightened.

“Don’t exaggerate. Children misunderstand things.””

Vittorio looked up slowly.

“Children misunderstand fear?””

“Vittorio, you’re being dramatic,” Bianca snapped.

“You always make her the victim.””

He stood with Lucy in his arms.

“You made my daughter eat from a bowl on the floor.””

“She was being punished.””

“For what?””

Silence.

Bianca looked away.

“For being disrespectful.””

Lucy buried her face against his shoulder.

Vittorio noticed something then.

A mark on her wrist.

A faint red line.

His voice became dangerously quiet.

“Where did that come from?””

Bianca immediately answered.

“She fell.””

Vittorio stared at her.

“Lucy?””

The little girl didn’t answer.

That scared him more than anything.

Because Lucy had always told him everything.

She told him when her teacher gave her extra homework. She told him when a boy stole her crayons. She told him when the neighbor’s dog barked too loudly.

But now she was silent.

And that meant someone had taught her silence.

Bianca stepped closer.

“Vittorio, don’t let your emotions control you. You know how difficult children can be.””

He looked at the woman standing in front of him.

The woman who had smiled at him during charity dinners.

The woman who had held Lucy’s hand in public.

The woman everyone believed was perfect.

“You have ten seconds to tell me the truth.””

Bianca laughed nervously.

“Or what?””

Vittorio’s eyes hardened.

“Or you’ll find out what happens when someone hurts the only thing I have left.””

A voice suddenly came from behind him.

“Vittorio.””

He turned.

Emma, Lucy’s nanny, stood near the hallway entrance.

Her face was pale.

She was holding her phone.

“I think you need to see something.””

Bianca’s expression changed.

“Emma.””

The nanny didn’t look at her.

“I’m sorry.””

Marcus Laurent, Bianca’s older brother, stepped into the room from the living area.

“What’s going on?””

Emma swallowed.

“I recorded something.””

Bianca’s eyes widened.

“You did what?””

Emma pressed the screen.

Vittorio watched the color disappear from Bianca’s face.

Because whatever was on that phone…

was something Bianca never thought anyone would see.

May you like

And Emma’s next words changed everything.

“This isn’t the first time.””
