Chapter 7: The Room That Held the Truth

I drove back to my old apartment before sunrise.

Noah sat beside me in silence.

Neither of us spoke much.

Some wounds were too deep for words.

When we arrived, the building looked exactly the same.

The cracked walls.

The broken lights.

The leaking roof.

The place where I thought my life had ended.

But now I wondered if something important had been waiting there all along.

“You don’t have to come inside,” I told Noah.

He shook his head.

“I’m coming.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because you always came for me.””

That sentence nearly broke me.

We walked upstairs.

My old door was slightly open.

I stopped.

“I locked this.””

Noah stepped behind me.

“Mom.””

I pushed the door open.

The room had been searched.

Everything was overturned.

The mattress was cut open.

The drawers were empty.

Someone had been looking for something.

Rachel arrived minutes later.

She looked around.

“He was here.””

I nodded.

“Ethan.””

She examined the room.

“Where would your father hide something?””

I laughed quietly.

“If I knew that, I would have found it years ago.””

Then Noah walked toward the wall.

“Wait.””

We looked at him.

He touched the wallpaper near my old bed.

“What?””

“When I was little, Grandpa showed me this.””

My heart stopped.

“Your grandfather?””

Noah nodded.

“He said this wall was special.””

I moved closer.

I had forgotten.

My father had always been strange about that corner.

He called it his “insurance.””

I ran my fingers along the wall.

Nothing.

Then Noah pointed.

“There.””

A tiny mark.

Almost invisible.

Rachel handed me a knife.

I cut carefully.

Behind the wallpaper was a small metal box.

Nobody spoke.

Inside was a key.

And a letter.

My name was written on the front.

*Amelia.*

My hands shook as I opened it.

My father’s handwriting appeared.

If you are reading this, then someone finally discovered the truth.

I covered my mouth.

I spent my life building something I could not leave openly. People around me wanted control. They wanted my company. They wanted my decisions.

But the one person I trusted was you.

I continued reading.

Ellis knows part of the truth. Ethan knows enough to be dangerous. But neither of them knows where the final records are.

I looked at Rachel.

“The final records.””

She nodded.

I kept reading.

The key inside this box opens the vault beneath the original Carter Holdings building.

My heart raced.

Inside that vault is proof of ownership.

Then the final sentence.

Amelia, never give this to someone because they ask. Give it only to someone who chooses you when they have nothing to gain.

The letter slipped from my hand.

Because I already knew who that person was.

Noah.

Not Ellis.

Not Ethan.

My son.

The boy who pretended to betray me to save me.

A sound came from the hallway.

Footsteps.

Rachel immediately turned off the lights.

Someone entered.

Slowly.

Carefully.

A voice whispered.

“Amelia.””

Ellis.

I stepped forward.

“What are you doing here?””

He looked relieved.

“I was trying to find you.””

“You followed me?””

“No.””

His eyes moved to the letter.

“You found it.””

I held it tighter.

“How do I know I can trust you?””

Ellis stopped.

That question hurt him.

Good.

“You don’t.””

Silence.

Then he said:

“I know I don’t deserve your trust.””

For once, he wasn’t defending himself.

He was admitting it.

“I lied to you.””

“Yes.””

“I hurt you.””

“Yes.””

“I used Noah.””

His voice broke.

“Yes.””

He swallowed.

“But I never stopped loving you.””

I looked away.

Because that was the one thing I didn’t know how to handle.

The truth and the betrayal existed together.

Then the lights suddenly came back on.

Rachel looked toward the window.

“Someone’s outside.””

A shadow moved.

Then the glass shattered.

A man climbed through.

Ethan.

He smiled.

“Thank you.””

Everyone froze.

“For what?”” I asked.

“For finding the key.””

He held up a weapon.

“Now you can save me the trouble.””

Noah stepped in front of me.

“No.””

My heart stopped.

“Noah, move.””

But he didn’t.

Ethan smiled.

“Still trying to be the hero?””

Noah looked at him.

“No.””

His voice was calm.

“I’m trying to stop being afraid.””

Ethan laughed.

Then Noah said something that made Ethan’s smile disappear.

“Because I know where the real evidence is.””

The room went silent.

Ethan stared at him.

“What did you say?””

Noah looked at me.

Then back at Ethan.

“Dad wasn’t the only one keeping secrets.””

I felt my stomach drop.

“Noah?””

He reached into his backpack.

And pulled out a small recording device.

“I recorded everything.””

Ethan’s face changed.

May you like

For the first time…

he looked scared.
