Chapter 5: The Ownership Nobody Knew
The folder slipped slightly in Ethan’s hand as he smiled.
Not a nervous smile.
Not the smile of a man caught.
The smile of someone who believed he was finally holding all the cards.
“You spent fifteen years believing Ellis was the powerful one,” Ethan said.
“You believed you were the woman he left behind.””
I stood between my son and the man who had destroyed our family.
But I refused to step back.
“What are you talking about?””
Ethan opened the folder.
Inside were documents.
Old contracts.
Property records.
Company transfers.
My name appeared again and again.
My hands tightened.
“I don’t understand.””
Ethan laughed softly.
“That’s exactly why Ellis was able to hide it from you.””
Noah stood behind him, his face pale.
“Mom, don’t listen to him.””
Ethan turned sharply.
“Quiet.””
My entire body reacted.
Noah flinched.
And that was the moment I stopped seeing Ethan as just a dangerous man.
I saw him as someone who had terrified my child.
I stepped forward.
“Don’t talk to my son like that.””
Ethan’s eyes narrowed.
“Still protective. Even after everything.””
“Especially after everything.””
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Ethan tossed the folder onto a nearby table.
“Your marriage to Ellis was never what you thought.””
I looked at him.
“You don’t know anything about my marriage.””
“Oh, I know more than you.””
He walked slowly around the warehouse.
“Do you remember twelve years ago when Carter Holdings almost collapsed?””
I stayed silent.
Of course I remembered.
It was the year Ellis became distant.
The year he started working late.
The year he stopped telling me anything about his business.
“I remember.””
Ethan nodded.
“You found the missing money.””
My heart tightened.
“I found irregular transfers.””
“Exactly.””
I remembered sitting in Ellis’s office late one night, going through files while Noah slept upstairs.
I remembered the shock on my face when I realized millions had disappeared.
I remembered confronting Ellis.
And I remembered his words.
Trust me.
At the time, I thought he was asking for loyalty.
Now I wondered if he was asking me to ignore the truth.
“You reported it,” Ethan said.
“No.””
My voice came out quietly.
“I didn’t.””
Ethan smiled.
“That’s where you’re wrong.””
I froze.
“What?””
“You don’t remember everything.””
The warehouse suddenly felt colder.
“What are you saying?””
Ethan opened another document.
“A report was filed under your name.””
My eyes moved across the page.
There it was.
My signature.
Except…
I never signed that.
“That’s fake.””
Ethan smiled.
“Now you understand.””
A sound came from behind me.
Noah.
“Mom.””
I turned.
His eyes were full of tears.
“I tried to tell you.””
I walked toward him.
“Noah, why didn’t you?””
His lips trembled.
“Because Dad said if I told anyone, they would come after you.””
My chest broke.
“You carried this alone?””
He looked down.
“I thought I could fix it.””
I pulled him into my arms.
“You’re twelve years old.””
“I know.””
“You shouldn’t have had to fix anything.””
He held onto me tightly.
“I was scared.””
Those two words hurt more than anything.
Because my son had spent months pretending he didn’t need me.
When all along, he needed me more than ever.
Behind us, Ethan cleared his throat.
“How touching.””
I turned.
“You used a child.””
Ethan shrugged.
“Children are easier to control than adults.””
The rage inside me burned.
“You’re disgusting.””
His expression changed.
“You have no idea what’s coming.””
Suddenly, the warehouse lights flickered.
Then went out.
A loud crash came from the entrance.
Someone had broken in.
Ethan immediately moved.
Not toward me.
Toward Noah.
I grabbed my son’s arm and pulled him back.
A flashlight beam cut through the darkness.
“Drop the folder!””
A voice echoed.
Ethan froze.
Then smiled.
“Ellis.””
The flashlight moved.
And there he was.
My ex-husband.
Standing in the doorway.
But he wasn’t wearing his usual expensive suit.
His shirt was torn.
His face was bruised.
For the first time, Ellis looked powerless.
“Let him go,” Ellis said.
Ethan laughed.
“You always were dramatic.””
“You threatened my son.””
“You used him first.””
The words hung in the air.
Ellis didn’t deny it.
That hurt more than I expected.
“Noah,” I whispered.
He looked at his father.
And I saw something break between them.
“You lied to me,” Noah said.
Ellis looked away.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“No.””
Noah’s voice shook.
“You were protecting yourself.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Ethan reached into his coat.
My heart stopped.
I grabbed Noah.
But before Ethan could pull anything out, Ellis moved.
He attacked him.
The two men crashed into the table.
The folder fell to the ground.
Pages scattered everywhere.
I pulled Noah toward the exit.
“Run.””
We ran.
Outside, cold air hit my face.
Police sirens sounded in the distance.
Rachel had called them.
I thought it was over.
I thought we were finally safe.
Then Noah stopped.
“Mom.””
I turned.
He was staring at the warehouse.
“What?””
His face had gone pale.
“He didn’t come here for the money.””
My stomach tightened.
“What do you mean?””
Noah looked at me.
“He wanted the original file.””
“What original file?””
He swallowed.
“The one that proves who really owns Carter Holdings.””
I stared at him.
“Who?””
Noah looked toward the warehouse.
May you like
Then whispered:
“You.””
