Chapter 3: The Man Behind the Lie

The photo was blurry.

But I knew the face.

Ethan Carter.

Ellis’s younger brother.

The man everyone believed had died eight years earlier.

My hands went numb.

I zoomed in until the image became distorted.

There was no mistake.

Same scar above his eyebrow.

Same sharp jawline.

Same cold eyes.

Alive.

I called Noah immediately.

No answer.

Again.

No answer.

A mother knows the difference between silence and danger.

This was danger.

I returned to my room and searched through every old document I owned.

Divorce papers.

Tax records.

Medical bills.

Anything connected to Ellis.

For hours, I found nothing.

Then I remembered something.

A box under my bed.

A box I hadn’t opened since Noah was a baby.

Inside were old photographs and letters.

At the bottom was a document I had never seen before.

A trust agreement.

My name was written across the top.

I read the first line.

*Beneficiary: Amelia Carter.*

My hands shook.

The document explained that a private investment account had been created years ago.

Six million dollars.

The money came from a company called Carter Holdings.

But why would Ellis put money in my name?

I kept reading.

Then I found the signature.

Ellis Carter.

And another signature.

Ethan Carter.

The room suddenly felt too small.

Ellis had hidden millions from me.

And his dead brother was somehow involved.

A knock came at the door.

I already knew who it was.

This time, I didn’t hide.

I opened the door.

Ellis stood there.

Perfect suit.

Expensive watch.

That same confident smile.

“Hello, Amelia.””

I stared at him.

“How long?””

His smile faded slightly.

“What?””

“How long were you planning to lie to me?””

He looked past me into the room.

“You found the account.””

Not a question.

A confirmation.

“You knew.””

Ellis sighed.

“You were never supposed to know.””

My chest tightened.

“You used Noah.””

His expression changed.

For the first time, I saw something close to guilt.

“Don’t pretend you understand.””

“You made our son stand in court and destroy me.””

“I protected him.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You call that protection?””

Ellis stepped closer.

“You don’t know what’s happening.””

“Then explain.””

He looked at me.

“No.””

That one word told me everything.

He wasn’t protecting Noah.

He was protecting himself.

“You’re afraid,” I said.

Ellis’s jaw tightened.

“Be careful.””

“You’ve said that before.””

He turned away.

“Give me the card.””

“No.””

“Amelia.””

“No.””

His eyes became cold.

“You have no idea what you’re holding.””

“Apparently neither did you.””

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then Ellis said quietly:

“You always thought I left because I stopped loving you.””

My heart tightened.

“I didn’t come here to talk about love.””

“No. You came here because you finally realized I was right.””

“About what?””

“That the world is cruel.””

He looked toward the window.

“People will destroy anything to get what they want.””

I stepped closer.

“Like you did?””

His phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

And for one second, fear crossed his face.

Real fear.

He answered.

“What happened?””

A pause.

Then:

“Where is he?””

My heart stopped.

Noah.

Ellis hung up.

I watched him carefully.

“What happened?””

He ignored me.

“You need to leave town.””

“What?””

“Take the money and disappear.””

I stared at him.

“You’re telling me to run?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

His face hardened.

“Because the people who want that account don’t care about you.””

He looked at me.

“They care about Noah.””

Then he walked away.

I stood frozen.

Because for the first time in years, Ellis had looked less like my enemy.

And more like a man terrified of something worse.

That night, I received another message.

Not from Noah.

From someone else.

*If you want your son alive, come alone.*

Below the message was an address.

And a picture.

Noah.

Sitting in a dark room.

His face covered in tears.

I grabbed my coat.

But before I left, another message arrived.

This one from Noah’s phone.

May you like

Only three words.

*Mom, don’t come.*
