Chapter 6: The Father Who Lied

The police arrived twenty minutes later.

But Ethan was gone.

Somehow, during the chaos, he disappeared.

Ellis was taken away for questioning.

And Noah sat beside me in the back of the ambulance, wrapped in a blanket, staring at the ground.

I wanted to hold him.

I wanted to tell him everything would be okay.

But I couldn’t lie.

Not after everything we had been through.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”” I asked softly.

Noah’s eyes filled with tears.

“I tried.””

I looked at him.

“When?””

“The night Dad told me I had to choose.””

My heart sank.

“What happened?””

He swallowed.

“He showed me documents.””

“What documents?””

“Things about Carter Holdings.””

He looked embarrassed.

“I didn’t understand all of it.””

“That’s okay.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“I should have.””

I touched his shoulder.

“Noah, you’re a child.””

His voice cracked.

“But everyone kept saying I was old enough to understand.””

I felt anger rise.

At Ellis.

At Ethan.

At everyone who had put this burden on my son.

“What did your father tell you?””

Noah stared at his hands.

“He said if I stayed with you, Ethan would hurt you.””

I closed my eyes.

“And if you chose him?””

“He said Ethan would think everything was under control.””

A cold realization hit me.

Ellis hadn’t wanted custody.

He had wanted a performance.

A fake victory.

A story Ethan would believe.

My son wasn’t abandoning me.

He was sacrificing himself.

I looked at Noah.

“Why the court?””

He wiped his eyes.

“Because Ethan was watching.””

“What?””

Noah nodded.

“He was there.””

I felt sick.

“He was in the courtroom?””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

Noah pointed toward the ambulance.

“He sat behind Dad’s lawyer.””

Everything clicked.

The smug smile.

The confidence.

The way Ellis never looked surprised.

Ethan had been controlling everything from the shadows.

That night, after Noah finally fell asleep, I sat alone in the hospital waiting room.

Ellis appeared.

Two officers walked behind him.

He looked exhausted.

Older.

For a moment, I saw the man I married.

Not the man who betrayed me.

Not the man who destroyed me.

Just Ellis.

“You should hate me,” he said.

I didn’t answer.

Because I did.

But somehow, that wasn’t the only thing I felt.

“You made our son lie in court.””

His eyes dropped.

“I know.””

“You made him believe he had to choose between us.””

“I know.””

“You watched me lose everything.””

His jaw tightened.

“I know.””

I stood.

“Then explain.””

Ellis looked at the floor.

“Your father left you something.””

I froze.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

I stared at him.

“My father died when I was twenty.””

“I know.””

“Then what?””

Ellis looked at me.

“Your father owned shares in Carter Holdings before it became what it is today.””

I felt dizzy.

“That’s impossible.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“It was hidden.””

“Why?””

“Because your father trusted the wrong people.””

I thought about all the years I believed I was ordinary.

A normal woman.

A mother.

Someone without power.

“You knew?””

Ellis nodded.

“When I married you, I knew.””

The pain came instantly.

“You married me because of this?””

His silence answered.

I stepped back.

“No.””

“It wasn’t like that.””

“Then explain.””

He looked desperate.

“I fell in love with you before I knew everything.””

“But you still hid it.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because once Ethan found out you were the true owner, you became a target.””

I laughed bitterly.

“So your solution was to make me lose my son?””

“No.””

His voice broke.

“My solution was to make Ethan believe you had nothing.””

I stared at him.

“You could have told me.””

“I wanted to.””

“But?””

He looked away.

“Ethan threatened Noah.””

The room went silent.

Then Ellis said something I never expected.

“He said he would make Noah disappear.””

My anger froze.

Because suddenly, I understood.

Ellis was still responsible.

He still made terrible choices.

But there had been fear behind them.

Real fear.

“What happens now?”” I asked.

Ellis looked at me.

“Now Ethan will come for the original ownership records.””

“And where are they?””

He hesitated.

That hesitation scared me.

“Ellis.””

He whispered:

“You have them.””

I shook my head.

“No, I don’t.””

“Yes, you do.””

“How?””

“Because your father hid them before he died.””

I stared at him.

“Where?””

Ellis looked directly at me.

“In the one place nobody would ever search.””

My phone buzzed.

A message.

From an unknown number.

I opened it.

A photo.

My old apartment.

The tiny room where I had cried alone.

And a caption underneath.

*You left something behind.*

Then another message appeared.

*Find it before I do.*
