Chapter 4: The Truth Noah Hid

I stared at those three words until my vision blurred.

*Mom, don’t come.*

Every instinct inside me screamed to ignore him.

A mother doesn’t stay home when her child is in danger.

But Noah had spent months pretending not to love me.

He had stood in court and pushed me away.

Only to secretly give me millions and warn me not to trust anyone.

My son was not running from me.

He was trying to protect me.

I sat on the edge of the bed and forced myself to think.

The address in the message wasn’t random.

Someone wanted me there.

Someone wanted me alone.

And if they truly had Noah, they expected me to make an emotional decision.

So I did something I had never done before.

I stopped acting like a desperate mother.

And started acting like someone fighting back.

I called an old friend.

Rachel.

She had worked in financial investigations before becoming a private consultant.

When she answered, she immediately knew something was wrong.

“Amelia?””

“I need help.””

“What happened?””

I looked at the black card.

“My son found six million dollars hidden in my name.””

Silence.

Then Rachel said:

“That sentence should not be possible.””

“I know.””

“Who knows about this?””

“My ex-husband. His brother. And whoever took Noah.””

Rachel became quiet.

“His brother?””

“Ethan.””

Another pause.

“Amelia…”

“What?””

“You need to understand something.””

Her voice lowered.

“Ethan Carter didn’t die in a car accident.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“What are you saying?””

“I’m saying the official report was changed.””

My stomach dropped.

“Changed by who?””

Rachel didn’t answer immediately.

Then she said:

“Ellis.””

I closed my eyes.

The person I spent fifteen years loving had been hiding a nightmare.

But why?

Why involve Noah?

Why make me look like a terrible mother?

Rachel sent me files.

Old company records.

Court documents.

Bank transfers.

And one document stood out.

A legal agreement signed twelve years earlier.

It stated that if anything happened to Ellis’s father’s company, the six million dollars would transfer to me.

Not Ellis.

Me.

Because I had discovered financial fraud inside the company years ago.

I remembered then.

The argument.

The night Ellis begged me not to report what I found.

I thought he was protecting his family.

I was wrong.

He was protecting a crime.

“Noah found the documents,” Rachel said.

I looked at the phone.

“How?””

“Kids notice things adults ignore.””

My eyes filled with tears.

My son.

My little boy.

He had been carrying a secret alone.

Then my phone rang.

Ellis.

I answered.

“What happened?””

His voice was different.

Broken.

“Amelia, where are you?””

“Why?””

“Because Ethan knows.””

My heart stopped.

“Knows what?””

“That Noah contacted you.””

I stood up.

“How do you know?””

“Because he’s not answering my calls.””

The anger in his voice disappeared.

Only fear remained.

“Ellis,” I said slowly.

“Tell me the truth.””

A long silence followed.

Then he whispered:

“I never wanted custody.””

The room went silent.

“What?””

“I needed Noah close because he had the only evidence.””

My hands shook.

“You used our son.””

“I was trying to keep him alive.””

“You should have told me!””

“I tried.””

“When?””

“The night before court.””

I froze.

“What?””

Ellis breathed heavily.

“Ethan found out Noah knew about the account. He threatened him.””

My knees weakened.

“And you thought breaking his heart was better?””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“I thought making you hate me would keep you away.””

I didn’t know what to say.

Because the man I hated had just revealed something worse.

He had been afraid.

But fear didn’t erase what he had done.

“Where is Noah?””

Ellis hesitated.

Then said:

“He’s at the old Carter warehouse.””

The address.

The same one from the message.

I grabbed my coat.

“Amelia, wait.””

“No.””

“You can’t go alone.””

“I’m his mother.””

“Exactly.””

I stopped.

Ellis continued:

“That’s why Ethan is counting on you.””

I ended the call.

But I didn’t go to the warehouse alone.

I took Rachel’s files.

I took my phone.

And I took the black card Noah had trusted me with.

When I arrived, the warehouse was dark.

The doors were half open.

Inside, I heard voices.

One belonged to Noah.

“Leave my mom alone.””

I froze.

Then another voice answered.

A voice I never thought I would hear.

Ethan.

“You’re just like your father.””

I stepped forward.

“Noah!””

Everything stopped.

My son turned.

His eyes filled with tears.

“Mom, no!””

Ethan smiled slowly from the shadows.

“Well.””

He looked at me.

“The mother finally arrived.””

Then he lifted a folder in his hand.

And my blood ran cold when I saw what was written on the cover.

*Amelia Carter — Original Ownership Records.*

Ethan smiled.

“You’ve spent fifteen years thinking you were powerless.””

May you like

He opened the folder.

“But you never knew what you actually owned.””
