Chapter 8: The Choice I Should Have Made Three Years Ago
I stared at the signature.
My signature.
A fake version of my name.
But somehow more painful than the forged document was the fact that Daniel didn’t deny it.
Not immediately.
Not this time.
“Daniel.””
He looked at me.
I waited.
For once, I wanted the truth.
Not excuses.
Not explanations.
The truth.
His silence answered first.
“You did this?””
His shoulders dropped.
“Emma…”
I closed my eyes.
That was enough.
My father stepped between us.
“You have exactly one chance to explain.””
Daniel looked around.
At the guests.
At his family.
At me.
Then he whispered:
“I was trapped.””
I laughed.
A small, broken laugh.
“Trapped?””
“Yes.””
“By who?””
He looked at Eleanor.
Nobody expected that.
Not even her.
She stared.
“Daniel.””
He shook his head.
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“I spent my whole life trying to make you happy.””
Eleanor’s face hardened.
“You ungrateful—”
“No.””
He interrupted her.
And for the first time in three years, Daniel stood against his family.
“You made me believe love was something I had to earn.””
The room went silent.
“I was never good enough.””
Eleanor looked shocked.
“So you betrayed your wife?””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I thought I could fix it.””
I looked at him.
“Fix what?””
He looked at me.
“The debt.””
My father frowned.
“What debt?””
Daniel hesitated.
Then the attorney answered.
“The Whitmore company has been struggling for years.””
Eleanor looked furious.
“Don’t.””
The attorney continued.
“They were using Emma’s assets as collateral.””
My stomach turned.
“You married me for money.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
“Then why?””
He cried silently.
“I loved you.””
I stared at him.
The worst part was…
I believed he believed that.
But love without protection was not enough.
Love without honesty was not enough.
Love that sacrificed me to save himself was not love I could live with.
“Then why did you choose them?””
Daniel had no answer.
Because there wasn’t one.
My father took the documents.
“The police will handle the legal side.””
Chloe suddenly stepped forward.
“You think this ends here?””
Everyone looked at her.
She was crying now.
But I didn’t believe it.
Not anymore.
“You ruined my family.””
I stared.
“Your family ruined itself.””
She shook her head.
“You don’t understand.””
“What?””
She smiled through tears.
“Daniel wasn’t the only one with secrets.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What are you talking about?””
She looked at me.
“Ask him about the baby.””
My heart stopped.
Again.
The baby.
No.
Not again.
I turned toward Daniel.
“What does she mean?””
Daniel looked terrified.
“Emma…”
My father’s voice was sharp.
“Answer.””
Daniel looked down.
“I found out something.””
“What?””
He swallowed.
“Before the pregnancy.””
The room spun.
“What did you find out?””
He looked at me.
“The doctor’s appointment…”
My hands trembled.
“Daniel.””
“I was going to tell you.””
“Tell me what?””
He whispered:
“There was a possibility the baby had inherited a condition.””
I stared.
Then confusion replaced fear.
“And?””
He looked at Eleanor.
“She wanted to use that information.””
My blood ran cold.
“For what?””
Daniel’s voice broke.
“To convince people you were incapable of being a mother.””
The room went silent.
I touched my stomach.
My child.
They had planned everything.
The ring.
The photos.
The money.
The lies.
Even my baby.
My father stepped forward.
“That’s enough.””
The police officer moved toward Chloe and Eleanor.
But before they reached them, Chloe shouted:
“You don’t know everything!””
Everyone stopped.
She looked at me.
“I wasn’t the one who started this.””
I frowned.
“What?””
She smiled.
“Ask Daniel who sent me the first message.””
Daniel’s face changed.
A terrible realization.
“What message?””
Chloe looked at him.
“The one telling me Emma needed to disappear.””
I turned slowly toward my husband.
Daniel looked like he was about to collapse.
“Emma…”
My voice was barely a whisper.
“Who sent it?””
Nobody answered.
Then Chloe raised her phone.
“I have proof.””
The screen lit up.
A message.
A name.
A sender.
And when I saw it…
My entire world stopped.
Because the person who had started the plan wasn’t Chloe.
Wasn’t Eleanor.
Wasn’t even someone from the Whitmore family.
It was someone I trusted.
Someone who had held my hand.
May you like
Someone who had promised to protect me.
My own best friend.
