Chapter 7: The Recording That Changed Everything

For the first time that night, Chloe looked nervous.

Not scared.

Nervous.

That was different.

Because people like Chloe only became nervous when they lost control.

My father noticed.

“Play it.””

Everyone looked confused.

The attorney connected a small device to the ballroom speakers.

Daniel looked at him.

“What is that?””

“A recording.””

My stomach tightened.

The sound began.

Static.

Then voices.

I recognized one immediately.

Chloe.

“Once Emma is gone, everything goes back to normal.””

The ballroom froze.

My own voice didn’t appear.

Only Chloe’s.

Then Eleanor.

“She’s too emotional. Everyone already thinks she’s unstable.””

I covered my mouth.

They had planned this.

The attorney paused the recording.

Nobody spoke.

Then continued.

Chloe’s voice returned.

“Daniel will choose us.””

Eleanor laughed.

“He always does.””

Daniel looked sick.

The recording continued.

“We just need the right moment.””

“When?””

“The wedding.””

My blood ran cold.

“The wedding?””

“Yes.””

Chloe sounded confident.

“Everyone will be watching. Everyone will believe the victim.””

The audio stopped.

Nobody moved.

Then Daniel whispered:

“How long?””

Chloe looked at him.

“What?””

“How long have you known?””

Her face changed.

“Daniel—”

“How long?””

She looked away.

“That doesn’t matter.””

“It matters.””

For the first time, Daniel sounded angry.

Not at me.

At them.

“You knew this would happen?””

Eleanor stepped forward.

“Daniel.””

“No.””

He looked at his mother.

“You knew?””

She said nothing.

That was her answer.

I watched my husband collapse under the weight of the truth.

And strangely…

I felt nothing.

Because the man I loved had already disappeared.

The attorney opened another file.

“There’s more.””

Chloe laughed nervously.

“How many tricks do you have?””

The attorney looked at her.

“Enough.””

He displayed another document.

“This recording was recovered from a device found in the Whitmore family office.””

Eleanor’s face changed.

“That’s impossible.””

“No.””

The attorney smiled slightly.

“It was placed there by accident.””

I looked at my father.

“You knew?””

He nodded.

“I suspected someone was setting you up.””

My eyes filled.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I needed proof.””

I looked down.

“I trusted them.””

My father’s expression softened.

“I know.””

Those two words almost broke me.

Because he understood.

He knew I wasn’t stupid.

I was loyal.

And they used that.

Suddenly, Daniel walked toward me.

“Emma.””

I stepped back.

“No.””

“Please.””

I shook my head.

“Do not ask me for forgiveness tonight.””

His eyes filled.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at him.

“You’re sorry because you got caught.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

My voice was quiet.

“If my father never came through those doors, would you have stopped them?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

And that was the final answer.

The doors opened again.

A police officer entered.

Everyone turned.

Chloe immediately pointed at me.

“Wait.””

The officer ignored her.

He walked toward my father.

“Mr. Hayes.””

My father nodded.

“Officer.””

I frowned.

“What’s happening?””

The officer looked at me.

“Mrs. Hayes, we need to ask you some questions.””

My heart dropped.

“About what?””

He looked at Daniel.

Then at Chloe.

“The attempted fraud.””

Everyone froze.

The officer continued:

“We have evidence that someone attempted to transfer ownership of several properties under your name.””

My face went pale.

“My name?””

“Yes.””

The officer handed my father a document.

He read it.

Then his expression became something I had never seen before.

Pure anger.

“What?””

I looked at him.

“Dad?””

He handed me the paper.

I read the signature.

My signature.

Except it wasn’t mine.

Someone had forged my name.

May you like

And at the bottom of the document was the person who submitted it.

Daniel Whitmore.
