Chapter 5: The Name I Was Never Supposed to Hear

“Ask your husband about Olivia.””

The words landed harder than the accusation about the ring.

Because Daniel changed.

Not confused.

Not angry.

Afraid.

I watched his face lose every bit of color.

And in that moment, before he even spoke, I already knew.

Olivia was real.

My father noticed too.

He stepped closer to me.

“Emma,” he said quietly, “do you know that name?””

I couldn’t answer.

My eyes stayed on Daniel.

“Who is Olivia?””

Nobody moved.

The wedding guests who had been whispering moments ago were completely silent now.

Daniel looked at Chloe.

“Don’t.””

That single word told me more than any confession could.

Chloe smiled.

“You should have told her yourself.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“This isn’t the time.””

“No,” Chloe replied.

“Actually, this is exactly the time.””

I felt my hands become cold.

I looked at my husband.

“Daniel.””

He didn’t look at me.

“Emma, please.””

“Please what?””

My voice cracked.

“Please ignore another thing your family did to me?””

“It's complicated.””

I almost laughed.

Complicated.

That word had protected him for three years.

Every insult from Eleanor was complicated.

Every cruel comment from Chloe was complicated.

Every time I cried alone after his family humiliated me was complicated.

But somehow, I was always expected to understand.

Never them.

“Who is Olivia?”” I asked again.

Daniel swallowed.

“She was someone I knew before you.””

“Someone you knew?””

Chloe laughed.

“Really, Daniel?””

She walked around him slowly.

“You’re going with that?””

Daniel’s face hardened.

“Chloe, stop.””

“No.””

She pointed at me.

“She deserves to know.””

My father looked at the attorneys.

“Get every recording ready.””

Daniel looked at him.

“What recordings?””

My father didn’t answer.

Instead, he looked at me.

“Emma, before tonight happened, I had already started investigating.””

My heart sank.

“You knew?””

“I knew something was wrong.””

He glanced at my torn dress.

“I just didn’t know how far they were willing to go.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Mr. Hayes, this is between my wife and me.””

My father looked at him.

“No.””

His voice was calm.

“This stopped being private when your family destroyed my daughter in front of two hundred people.””

Daniel looked down.

I had never seen him look smaller.

Not because my father intimidated him.

Because he knew he was guilty.

I turned back to him.

“Tell me.””

He closed his eyes.

“Emma…”

“Tell me who Olivia is.””

A long silence followed.

Then Daniel whispered:

“She was my fiancée.””

The room seemed to tilt.

I stared at him.

“What?””

Chloe smiled.

“Now we’re getting somewhere.””

Daniel immediately shook his head.

“That was years ago.””

“How many years?””

“Before I met you.””

“That wasn’t my question.””

He looked away.

“Two years before.””

I felt a strange emptiness.

Not rage.

Not sadness.

Just emptiness.

Because suddenly, every strange moment in our marriage had a shadow behind it.

The late-night phone calls.

The secret business trips.

The way he defended Chloe and Eleanor without thinking.

I remembered one night, six months into our marriage.

I had asked him why he never introduced me to some of his old friends.

He had smiled and kissed my forehead.

“Those people aren’t important anymore.””

I believed him.

I was always believing him.

“What happened to Olivia?”” I asked.

Daniel stayed silent.

Chloe answered.

“She left.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

Her smile faded.

“Because of you.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

Daniel immediately said, “That’s not true.””

But Chloe continued.

“She found out Daniel was with you.””

I stared at my husband.

“You cheated on her?””

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

Daniel stepped closer.

“I ended things before I met you.””

“Then why does your sister say otherwise?””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

That was enough.

My father quietly said:

“Interesting.””

Daniel looked at him.

“What does that mean?””

“It means we found another reason your family wanted Emma gone.””

I looked at him.

“What are you saying?””

My father opened another file.

Inside was a photograph.

He handed it to me.

I looked down.

And my breath stopped.

It was Daniel.

With Olivia.

Taken recently.

Not years ago.

Recently.

Three months ago.

They were standing outside a restaurant.

Holding hands.

I looked at Daniel.

“You told me you were working late that night.””

His face collapsed.

“Emma…”

“No.””

My voice became quiet.

“Don’t say my name like that.””

The room blurred.

Three years.

I had defended this man.

I had carried his child.

I had stood beside him when his family treated me like an outsider.

And all along…

He had another woman.

“I can explain.””

I looked at him.

“I don’t want an explanation.””

“Emma, listen—”

“No.””

I stepped back.

“The worst part isn’t Olivia.””

His eyes filled with guilt.

“The worst part is that you watched them destroy me tonight.””

Daniel froze.

Because he knew.

He could have stopped it.

One sentence.

One moment.

One choice.

And he chose silence.

Then the attorney suddenly looked at his tablet.

“Mr. Hayes.””

My father turned.

“What?””

“There’s something else.””

The attorney’s expression changed.

“The financial records.””

I looked up.

“What financial records?””

He hesitated.

May you like

Then said:

“The ring theft was only the beginning.””
