Chapter 4: The Man Who Knew Everything

Nobody spoke when my father entered the ballroom.

Richard Hayes had always been calm.

That was what made people afraid of him.

He never needed to shout.

He never needed to threaten.

He simply waited.

And when he moved, people usually regretted underestimating him.

“Emma.””

The sound of my father’s voice almost broke me.

Not because I was weak.

Because for the first time that night, someone looked at me like I was his daughter.

Not a suspect.

Not a problem.

His daughter.

I walked toward him.

He immediately noticed my torn dress.

His expression changed.

Not dramatically.

Just enough.

Enough for everyone to know he was angry.

“Who did this?””

Nobody answered.

My father looked around the room.

Then his eyes stopped on Daniel.

My husband looked away.

That was when my father understood.

“I see.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Mr. Hayes, this is a misunderstanding.””

My father looked at him.

“Is it?””

“Yes.””

“Then why is my pregnant daughter standing here with her dress destroyed?””

Daniel had no answer.

Chloe suddenly stepped forward.

“She stole my ring.””

My father looked at her.

“The Matriarch Ring?””

“Yes.””

He nodded slowly.

“Interesting.””

Chloe frowned.

“What does that mean?””

My father opened the folder.

“It means you should have checked your facts before accusing my daughter.””

The entire room went quiet.

Eleanor crossed her arms.

“And who exactly are you accusing?””

My father smiled.

“I’m not accusing anyone.””

He looked at the attorneys.

“They are.””

The first attorney stepped forward.

“My name is Andrew Collins. We represent the Hayes family.””

Chloe laughed.

“Lawyers?””

She looked around.

“She brought lawyers to a wedding?””

My father didn’t react.

“No.””

He looked at her.

“I brought lawyers because I knew this wedding would become a crime scene.””

A wave of whispers spread.

Daniel’s face changed.

“What?””

My father looked at him.

“You really didn’t know?””

Daniel froze.

“Know what?””

My father opened the folder.

“Your sister has been planning this for weeks.””

Chloe’s face went white.

“That’s a lie.””

The attorney placed several documents on the table.

“Security records.””

Then more.

“Vault access logs.””

Then a final page.

“Messages between Chloe Whitmore and Eleanor Whitmore.””

Eleanor stepped back.

“That’s impossible.””

My father looked at her.

“Nothing is impossible when people leave digital footprints.””

I looked at the documents.

I didn’t understand everything.

But I understood enough.

The truth was finally entering the room.

The attorney pointed to the screen.

“The photograph displayed earlier was manipulated.””

Chloe’s lips parted.

“No.””

“Yes.””

He continued.

“The original image shows Mrs. Hayes entering the hallway three weeks ago to organize documents. The box was added afterward.””

Daniel stared at Chloe.

“Why?””

Nobody answered.

Then my father said something that made the entire room freeze.

“Because the ring was never stolen.””

Chloe looked terrified.

My heart started pounding.

“What?””

My father turned toward the wedding stage.

“Because Chloe already sold it.””

The room exploded.

“What?””

“No!””

“That’s impossible!””

Chloe stepped backward.

“You can’t prove that.””

My father smiled.

“That’s why I brought the person who can.””

The ballroom doors opened again.

A woman entered.

Older.

Nervous.

Holding a small envelope.

Chloe recognized her instantly.

And all the color left her face.

“No…”

Daniel looked confused.

“Who is that?””

My father answered.

“The jeweler who repaired the ring two weeks ago.””

Chloe whispered.

“She signed a confidentiality agreement.””

The jeweler looked down.

“I did.””

Then she looked at Chloe.

“But I never agreed to lie.””

Nobody moved.

The woman opened the envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

A receipt.

And a transaction record.

She looked at Daniel.

“Your sister brought me the Matriarch Ring.””

Daniel stared.

“Why?””

The jeweler swallowed.

“She asked me to remove the family crest before selling it.””

Silence.

Pure silence.

Chloe’s entire plan collapsed in front of everyone.

But then she looked at me.

And instead of apologizing…

She smiled.

A small, terrifying smile.

Because she knew something.

Something nobody else knew.

“You think you won,” Chloe whispered.

I stared at her.

“What?””

She stepped closer.

“You still don’t know why I chose tonight.””

My father’s expression changed.

The room became cold.

Because Chloe wasn’t afraid anymore.

She looked directly at Daniel.

Then at me.

May you like

And said five words that changed everything.

“Ask your husband about Olivia.””
