Chapter 3: The Evidence They Created
The image filled the giant screen.
Two hundred people stared at me.
I stared at it too.
Because I had never seen that photograph before.
“Emma?”” Daniel whispered.
I didn’t answer.
My mind was racing.
The picture showed me standing in the hallway outside the family vault.
The lighting was dim.
My face was visible.
My hand was holding a small black box.
It looked real.
Almost too real.
Chloe watched my reaction carefully.
She was enjoying this.
“Interesting, isn’t it?””
I looked at her.
“You edited that.””
Her smile disappeared.
Then she laughed.
“Of course.””
She turned to the guests.
“She always does this.””
I frowned.
“Does what?””
“Lies.””
The word hit harder than I expected.
Because I realized something.
This was never about a ring.
It was about destroying my reputation.
Daniel walked toward the screen.
“Emma, explain.””
I looked at him.
“Do you actually want an explanation?””
“Yes.””
“Or do you want me to admit to something I didn’t do?””
He looked away.
That hurt.
More than anything.
I took a deep breath.
“The picture is fake.””
Chloe immediately laughed.
“Proof?””
“Yes.””
Everyone waited.
I looked at the screen.
“The shadow.””
Chloe frowned.
“What?””
“The shadow.””
I pointed.
“The light source in the hallway is on the left side. My shadow should fall behind me.””
I looked at the image.
“But it doesn’t.””
The room became quieter.
I continued.
“Someone placed me into that picture.””
Chloe rolled her eyes.
“Now you’re an expert?””
“No.””
I looked at her.
“I’m just someone who paid attention.””
For the first time, Chloe looked uncertain.
Eleanor stepped forward.
“Enough.””
She pointed at me.
“You have caused enough embarrassment.””
I stared at her.
“Embarrassment?””
My voice shook.
“You ripped my dress.””
She ignored me.
“You were given kindness.””
I almost laughed.
“Kindness?””
“Yes.””
Her face hardened.
“We accepted you.””
Those words.
Those simple words.
They finally broke the last piece of patience I had.
“You never accepted me.””
The ballroom went silent.
“You tolerated me because Daniel loved me.””
I looked at Daniel.
“And I spent three years trying to earn love from people who had already decided I wasn’t worth it.””
Daniel opened his mouth.
But no words came out.
Then Chloe suddenly walked toward me.
“You’re trying to distract everyone.””
“No.””
“You’re guilty.””
“No.””
She lowered her voice.
“You should have left when we warned you.””
I froze.
“What?””
A flicker of fear crossed her face.
Just for a second.
Then she recovered.
“What are you talking about?””
I studied her.
Three months ago, strange things had started happening.
My office files disappeared.
Important emails were deleted.
A necklace Daniel gave me vanished and somehow appeared weeks later in Chloe’s closet.
Every time I questioned it, everyone told me I was imagining things.
I had ignored it.
Because I trusted my husband.
That was my mistake.
I looked at Chloe.
“You’ve been trying to make me look unstable.””
Her smile faded.
Daniel noticed.
“Chloe?””
She quickly turned.
“What?””
“What is she talking about?””
Chloe looked annoyed.
“Daniel, don’t listen to her.””
I watched my husband.
Really watched him.
And for the first time, I saw doubt.
Not toward me.
Toward them.
Eleanor noticed too.
She grabbed his arm.
“Don’t let her manipulate you.””
That sentence told me everything.
Daniel was still trapped between us.
But I was done waiting for him to choose.
I reached into my purse.
Everyone watched.
I pulled out my phone.
Then I pressed a number.
My father answered instantly.
“Emma?””
I turned away from the crowd.
My voice became a whisper.
“Dad.””
A pause.
“What happened?””
I looked at Daniel.
At Chloe.
At Eleanor.
Then I whispered the three words I had never thought I would say.
“Destroy them all.””
There was silence.
Then my father replied.
“Stay where you are.””
I closed my eyes.
“Dad—”
“The doors are already locking.””
I looked up.
Across the ballroom, every entrance suddenly clicked.
One by one.
Locked.
Everyone heard it.
The celebration stopped.
Chloe’s smile disappeared.
Eleanor turned pale.
Daniel looked confused.
“What did you do?””
I looked at my husband.
For the first time that night, I felt calm.
“I didn’t do anything.””
The lights flickered.
The main doors opened.
And a man walked in holding a folder.
My father.
Behind him were three attorneys.
May you like
And one person Chloe never expected to see.
Someone who had the truth.
