Chapter 9: The Memory Emily Carried
For six years, I had protected Emily from the darkest parts of our past.
I kept the details of Laura’s death away from her.
I never told her about the questions.
The unanswered phone calls.
The arguments between families.
The uncomfortable silence whenever Ethan’s name came up.
I wanted her childhood to be filled with bedtime stories and birthday cakes.
Not suspicion.
Not fear.
But standing there in her bedroom, watching my seven-year-old daughter hold a memory she had buried for years, I realized something.
Children remember more than adults think.
They may forget dates.
They may forget words.
But they remember feelings.
And Emily remembered fear.
I knelt in front of her.
“Sweetheart, what do you remember about Uncle Ethan?””
She hugged her stuffed rabbit tighter.
“I don’t know if it’s real.””
“Tell me anyway.””
She looked at me carefully.
“Are you mad?””
The question hurt.
“Never.””
She sat on the edge of her bed.
“When Mommy was sick…”
I froze.
“She wasn’t sick,” I whispered.
Emily frowned.
“She told me she was tired.””
My heart started racing.
“What else?””
She looked at the floor.
“There was a night when Mommy was crying.””
I sat beside her.
“Do you remember what she said?””
Emily closed her eyes.
“A little.””
She spoke slowly.
“She said, ‘I trusted my own brother.’”
The room felt colder.
“Did you hear anything else?””
She nodded.
“Mommy picked me up.””
Her voice became smaller.
“She put me in the car.””
I held my breath.
“She told me not to tell Daddy because she didn’t want him to worry.””
My hands tightened.
Laura had been afraid.
And she had hidden it from me.
Not because she didn’t trust me.
Because she wanted to protect me.
“What happened next?””
Emily touched her forehead.
“I don’t remember everything.””
“That’s okay.””
“I remember Uncle Ethan yelling.””
The words hit me.
“Where?””
“At our house.””
I looked at Mark.
He had gone completely still.
Emily continued.
“Mommy told him to leave.””
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“He said something bad would happen if she told you.””
I felt anger rising.
Controlled.
Cold.
The kind of anger that doesn’t explode.
The kind that becomes a decision.
“What happened after that?””
Emily looked at me.
“Mommy hugged me.””
Her voice cracked.
“She said, ‘Daddy will keep you safe.’”
I pulled her into my arms.
Because that was the promise Laura believed in.
The promise I almost failed.
A knock came from downstairs.
Detective Harris.
He had returned after reviewing the new information.
When I told him what Emily remembered, his expression changed.
“This changes everything.””
“Can you arrest him?””
“We need evidence connecting him directly.””
I looked at him.
“We have Laura’s letter.””
“We have suspicious activity.””
“We have Rebecca.””
He nodded.
“But Ethan is careful.””
I hated that word.
Careful.
People like Ethan weren’t careful.
They were practiced.
They knew how to hide.
The detective placed a folder on the table.
“We found something else.””
I opened it.
Inside was an old photograph.
Laura standing outside a building.
Beside her was Ethan.
And behind them…
Rebecca.
My stomach dropped.
“Where was this taken?””
“Three weeks before your wife died.””
I looked closer.
There was something written on the back.
A date.
And an address.
The same address where Ethan’s company had been registered.
I looked up.
“What is this?””
“We don’t know yet.””
My phone buzzed.
Another unknown number.
This time, it wasn’t a message.
It was a video.
I opened it.
The screen showed a dark room.
A chair.
And someone sitting in it.
Rebecca.
Her hands were tied.
My blood ran cold.
Then Ethan appeared behind her.
He looked directly into the camera.
“Daniel.””
My entire body tensed.
“You wanted the truth.””
He leaned closer.
“Now you’ll get it.””
Rebecca looked terrified.
Not like the woman from the wedding.
Not like someone pretending.
Actually afraid.
Ethan smiled.
“Come alone.””
The video ended.
Detective Harris immediately stood.
“No.””
I looked at him.
“She knows something.””
“We can track the location.””
“If we wait, she might not survive.””
He stared at me.
“You cannot walk into a trap.””
I looked upstairs.
At Emily.
At the reason I had survived everything.
Then I looked back at the screen.
“I already lost my wife because I didn’t know the truth.””
I grabbed my jacket.
“I’m not losing another person.””
The detective blocked the door.
“Daniel.””
I stopped.
He looked at me seriously.
“If you go there, you do exactly what I say.””
I nodded.
But deep inside, I already knew.
Ethan wasn’t just trying to hurt me.
He wanted me to choose.
Family.
May you like
Or revenge.
And he had no idea what kind of choice he had just forced me to make.
