Chapter 8: The Accident That Wasn’t An Accident

For six years, I believed I knew how my wife died.

A rainy highway.

A lost driver.

A tragic accident.

That was the story everyone told me.

The story I accepted because the truth was too painful.

But now everything had changed.

I sat in Detective Harris’s office while he reviewed Laura’s old case.

“You’re asking me to reopen a closed investigation.””

“Yes.””

“Based on a phone call from a man with a motive?””

“Based on evidence that my wife knew she was in danger.””

He looked at the letter.

Then at me.

“Why didn’t you bring this forward before?””

“Because I never had it.””

He studied the handwriting.

“This is real.””

I nodded.

The detective sighed.

“I’ll request the files.””

Hours later, we found something.

Something everyone missed.

A detail buried in the accident report.

The vehicle that caused the crash had been reported stolen.

But it was never recovered.

My hands went cold.

“Why wasn’t that investigated?””

Detective Harris frowned.

“I don’t know.””

Someone had failed.

Or someone had made sure it disappeared.

That evening, Rebecca called.

I almost ignored it.

Almost.

But I answered.

“What do you want?””

Her voice sounded exhausted.

“Daniel, you need to listen.””

“I’ve listened enough.””

“No.””

A pause.

“You don’t understand what Ethan is capable of.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You worked with him.””

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked me.

“You admit it?””

“I was desperate.””

“For money?””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“For protection.””

I didn’t speak.

Rebecca continued.

“Ethan threatened me.””

“Why?””

“Because I found out what he did.””

The room became silent.

“What did he do?””

“I don’t know everything.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I know how it sounds.””

“Yes.””

She took a breath.

“I never planned to hurt Emily.””

I closed my eyes.

“You wrote a note telling my daughter she was leaving.””

“I was trying to scare you into changing the trust.””

There it was.

The truth.

“You used my daughter as a weapon.””

“I know.””

For the first time, she sounded ashamed.

But it wasn’t enough.

“You don’t get forgiveness because you regret being caught.””

“I know.””

“Then why call?””

A long silence.

Then:

“Because Ethan is coming for you.””

I stood.

“What does that mean?””

“He doesn’t care about the money anymore.””

My heart raced.

“Then what does he want?””

Rebecca whispered:

“Revenge.””

The call ended.

Minutes later, my home alarm went off.

I ran.

The back door was open.

Emily was upstairs.

I rushed to her room.

Empty.

My heart stopped.

“Emily!””

No answer.

I ran through the house.

Then I heard her voice.

“Daddy?””

I turned.

She was standing behind me.

Safe.

But holding something.

A small envelope.

“Someone left this outside.””

I took it from her.

My hands shook.

Inside was a single piece of paper.

Five words.

*Ask Emily about her mother.*

I looked at my daughter.

Confused.

Scared.

“Emily…”

She stared at me.

Then slowly said:

“Daddy?””

“Yes?””

“I think I remember something about Mommy.””

I felt my blood run cold.

“What do you remember?””

She looked toward the window.

The same window where someone had been watching us.

And she whispered:

“Mommy was scared of Uncle Ethan.””
